True crime writer Peter Hoysted, aka ‘Jack the Insider’ returns with the story of one of Australia’s most elaborate criminal enterprises.
From the early 1950s, Melbourne’s Federated Ship Painters and Dockers Union was much more than an affiliation of dock workers.
It became a thriving criminal enterprise, and a front for crimes including murder, theft, extortion and prostitution.
The Union held sway for five decades, and had members who had never done a day’s work on the Docks, but had plenty of experience with killing.
Eventually a Royal Commission was called into their activities, which led to the downfall of a Federal Government.

Ok, what do we think about the ball-tampering incident? (and is it even the first time?) It was the lead story on ABC RN this morning. Thinking about that. Are we all overreacting? How big a deal is it really? Personally, I always thought that we didn’t do that sort of thing at a national level (and most others) but our name is now in the mud forever. A lot of people, including many Australians are going to have a lot of fun with this and there’ll be a lot of ‘told you so’. No surprises! I am at this point very disappointed and pretty angry and just bemused. They aren’t messing with one ball in one innings in one game, they are messing with nearly 150 years of tradition. Our honour if you like. It doesn’t belong to them. All the talk of lines being crossed in the last test and where said lines actually were – the line is there in black and white in this case. Not happy Steve.

It will need to shred its costs all over again. There is no better metaphor for the extraordinary stupidity of the corporate tax cuts. We are entering what will be a renewed income shakeout, easily severe enough to destroy the Budget outlook, and we’re going to hand out $8bn per annum of corporate welfare right at the precipice.

JTI thank you for the response. I believe most of the links from this site contain the use of data as evidence to support the opinions expressed. I note comments from others have links attached presented as fact also which are purely opinion pieces yet they go unremarked upon as was JS figure on income but you have decided to respond to me a couple of times to make your points. I understand you may not agree with the content. I more than understand this is your blog. It is sad after over a decade you now seem to be happy with this blog becoming similar to the echo chamber that is the comments section of several other outlets. It appears you have decided that my comments require examination but other obviously mendacious comments are fine.
