I have been perusing the pages of The New York Times so you don’t have to.
With great sound and fury, the NYT recently opened up an office in this Wide Brown Land and the results have been odd, to say the least.
It’s hard to know who the Australian articles are written for. Are they for Americans to glean a greater understanding of a land so far away they couldn’t care less about it, or are they written for the meagre number of Australian subscribers who signed up during the US presidential election, only to forget to unsubscribe after all the votes were counted?
Either way, the Times fails miserably.

Oh dear the Adani scam subsidised by taxpayers would be terrible for QLD coal miners. That is before you even consider the NSW coal mines. Gee who would have thought doubling the amount of coal would force coal mines to lose money??? No Surprises.

Never mind the greens, NSW Energy Minister highlights the Federal coalitions problems. No Surprises.

I’m off to Ottawa for six weeks at the end of the month.
It’ll be interesting to see how Justin Trudeau’s faring over there.
I’d be amazed if the mood isn’t a lot brighter there now, than when I lived there in 2007, just after Stephen Harper was installed.
He wants to give 8 million to a young guy that killed a Canadian soldier when he was 15 years old because he was detained in Gitmo. Why give 8 mill to a murderer? The family of the soldier might get most it back I hope.
I was reading the obits in The Age today over coffee. This one about Judge Weeramantry. Who was a very interesting and learned man – you would need to Google his achievements.
But thought you would like this excerpt – from a speech he gave on his 90th birthday – a few weeks before he died:
”We talk a great deal about the love we have for our children, but there has never been a generation since the human race began which has been so regardless of the rights of generations to come. All over the world we are destroying the environment, we are damaging the rights of children and grandchildren and a thousand generations to come, but nobody seems to care.
Problems that are before us and are looming large before our children are great. we cannot disregard our duties as members of the generation that is on the brink of destruction to do whatever we can to spread the word that every religion and every tradition of the human race condemns war.”
He died in January. The only thing I think he has wrong is that there may not be ”thousands of generations” to come. If we are to believe the science.
”
We are actually looking after the environment a hell of a lot better than any other generation in modern times Boa.
If SHY wants to blame “old white men” maybe I can call her “stupid young woman”?
She’s not that young.
Stupid old hag?
Silly old woman?
There are lots to pick from.
And she *is* white
True, so I guess she’ll have to stick with stupid woman. That fits.
That was an incredibly stupid remark of hers. She deserves all she gets on this
When was the flight for the daughter booked? It all hinges on that…….
As ugly as this is and as much as people hate the perceived misuse of parliamentary entitlements, SHY has not breached the letter of the rules in relation to her entitlements. Overall I find when these stories arise the effect is to keep good people out of politics. No matter the sinner may be Labor, Green, Lib, Nat or PHON, I reckon these stories resonate with people who may have a future in politics but stay away thinking they would be happier where they are rather than becoming the focus of a national scandal over a few thousand bucks.
Wouldn’t “middle aged white women” be more accurate?
