Donald doesn’t trump Watergate

A voracious media in deep attack mode. The Democratic Party still in clinical shock, flailing about indignantly. Donald Trump on the ropes. A chaotic administration deeply mired in scandal and personality conflict.

On cue we have been treated to the prospect of Trump being punted from office for high crimes and misdemeanours on a Nixonian scale.

The prospect of impeachment is, on the evidence available today, the stuff of fantasy, led by journos fixated on winning Pulitzers and prowling like junkies in search of their particular crack cocaine — “gotcha” moments.

Meanwhile, Democrats are in deep denial, unable to comprehend that they managed to do the near impossible — hand the keys to the White House to a man spectacularly ill-equipped to deal with the responsibilities of office.

In Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton’s Doomed Campaign, the revealing exploration of the deficiencies and appalling missteps made by Trump’s opponent in last year’s presidential election, writers Amie Parnes and Jonathan Allen tell the story of Clinton in 2015 sitting down to plan her election strategy. So limp and uncertain was she about her reasons for courting the big chair in the White House that her advisers dabbled with using the political slogan, “Because it’s her turn.”

Comments over the wall are amusing as always. Most of them seem to think JTI is praising Trump. It’s like only the words they agree with are visible to them, while the rest gets automatically redacted inside their brains.

  • Carl on the Coast says:

Of course, the big difference between Trump and erstwhile presidents, aspirants and critics is that Trump truthfully externalises his thoughts, feelings, beliefs, reactions, etc, while others prevaricate, procrastinate, pretend and piss in each others pockets.

Respect to Noel Pearson and his pragmatic comments apropos the long ongoing witch hunt of Pell.
Seriously, if there are grounds to bring Pell to court, bring ’em on and bring him in. The rest is a tedious trial by media – at best. The bravery of populism!

Firstly, Vale Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, Audioslave, and others. A very tragic loss, indeed.

Secondly, your article actually underplays the whole list of Nixon’s maleficence on foreign policy almost worldwide. Some reasonable domestic achievements, but overshadowed by the whole Watergate thing and what led up to it (allegedly, if Christopher Hitchens and others are to be believed, that he and Kissinger helped talk the North Vietnamese out of peace talks in 1968 to help improve their chances of winning the election against the rather Clintonesque candidate, Hubert Humphrey).

Trump’s cronies remind me more of the likes of Whittaker Chambers, Alger Hiss, Klaus Fuchs, the Rosenbergs, etc., than Tricky Dick and Kissinger (many of whom were, now ironically, prosecuted and persecuted by Trump’s mentor, Roy Cohn).

Not to mention Nixon was at least sane some of the time and wasn’t an overgrown child in a 70-year old man’s body.

I can think of any number of Roman Emperors, Serbian Monarchs, Dutch leaders, and others who’ve had far worse treatment than the Donald, too.

I lived through the Nixon era Rhys and he was a snivelling sissy with no balls who simply needed the approval of those that mattered. POTUS Trump is his own man and not beholden to anyone and supremely confident. I think the highlight of the Nixon Presidency was when he met ELVIS, followed by his Resignation!

Almost reneged, Footy tips in please. Cats to be trumps.

The ‘swamp” is defending itself with its anti-Trump movement.
Who knows where the truth lies.
This kind of throws new light on the dismissal of the FBI Director – but does it – because what camp does the Assistant Attorney General belong to?
    I have no idea.

Strange ad. Sportsbet for their new Android app. Spokesman is Ben Johnson. Tagline: “Puts the ‘roid in Android!”

    • Jack The Insider says:

There have been complaints and I thought it had been pulled. Apologies for late posting. Was attending Mark Colvin’s funeral. A brilliant service and four wonderful tributes from his wife, two sons And his sister. There will be a memorial service in June.

    • John O'Hagan says:

I thought it was a funny idea, but to actually use the real Ben Johnson is a bit proceeds-of-crime IMO.

      • Jack The Insider says:

Johnson is a rarity. He actually admitted to doping. He sure as hell wasn’t the only one doping at Seoul. At least he put his hand up when he got caught.

  • Lou oTOD says:

Maybe this is what the Donald needs, some uplifting music, Chariots Of Fire by the London Philharmonic, but with a twist from the guest artist. Hilarious
