The Painters & Dockers Union

True crime writer Peter Hoysted, aka ‘Jack the Insider’ returns with the story of one of Australia’s most elaborate criminal enterprises.

From the early 1950s, Melbourne’s Federated Ship Painters and Dockers Union was much more than an affiliation of dock workers.

It became a thriving criminal enterprise, and a front for crimes including murder, theft, extortion and prostitution.

The Union held sway for five decades, and had members who had never done a day’s work on the Docks, but had plenty of experience with killing.

Eventually a Royal Commission was called into their activities, which led to the downfall of a Federal Government.

Ok, what do we think about the ball-tampering incident? (and is it even the first time?) It was the lead story on ABC RN this morning. Thinking about that. Are we all overreacting? How big a deal is it really? Personally, I always thought that we didn’t do that sort of thing at a national level (and most others) but our name is now in the mud forever. A lot of people, including many Australians are going to have a lot of fun with this and there’ll be a lot of ‘told you so’. No surprises! I am at this point very disappointed and pretty angry and just bemused. They aren’t messing with one ball in one innings in one game, they are messing with nearly 150 years of tradition. Our honour if you like. It doesn’t belong to them. All the talk of lines being crossed in the last test and where said lines actually were – the line is there in black and white in this case. Not happy Steve.

Hey Dismayed, have you ever been in a bar where there’s one bloke who won’t shut up and wants to dominate the place? Just wondering.

    Take it easy.

Attaching this here because it doesn’t look like it’s going to go up stand alone??:

Even more evidence why hanson should not be able to negotiate anything. She has been conned due to her lack of knowledge. “Fortescue is going to invest to increase its iron ore grades. We already know it. It has no choice given the persistence of huge lower grade iron ore discounts. That investment is coming no matter what.
But it’s also about to come under intensifying and extreme pressure as iron ore crashes into the Chinese slowdown. Cliffs shut its low grade WA iron ore this week. Low grade Indian ore is gone. Atlas is going into lithium. There’s a cost curve shakeout underway for low grade ore already.FMG is swimming full tilt to keep its head above a rising tide and it will sink more and more as the year rolls on and the Chinese slowdown sends iron ore back to the lows, with low grade material much lower than 2015. It will need to shred its costs all over again. There is no better metaphor for the extraordinary stupidity of the corporate tax cuts. We are entering what will be a renewed income shakeout, easily severe enough to destroy the Budget outlook, and we’re going to hand out $8bn per annum of corporate welfare right at the precipice.
The resulting sovereign downgrade should be sent straight to One Nation head office with a dozen red roses.”

Let’s be clear about this as you frequently link to this site. Regardless of topic, it is opinion, not fact.

      • Dismayed says:

JTI thank you for the response. I believe most of the links from this site contain the use of data as evidence to support the opinions expressed. I note comments from others have links attached presented as fact also which are purely opinion pieces yet they go unremarked upon as was JS figure on income but you have decided to respond to me a couple of times to make your points. I understand you may not agree with the content. I more than understand this is your blog. It is sad after over a decade you now seem to be happy with this blog becoming similar to the echo chamber that is the comments section of several other outlets. It appears you have decided that my comments require examination but other obviously mendacious comments are fine. It is sad after over a decade of what you yourself likened to more like a “front bar” you seem to have chosen that the more right wing and conservative commentators can have what they have always wanted . That is No challenging of their more obviously false and misleading comments. I saw your not to JB a couple of blogs ago and apart from the “turtle dove” moniker he has not seen him since. You seem to have decided that because I dare respond to the initial abuse I am your main concern. I will continue to read your efforts as I have done and offer comment if accepted but it is clear you have decided that “front bar” type challenging is not what you want anymore. I wish you well in your treatment. Dismayed.

My main point is the ABS is the source of every important socio-demographic piece of data in Australia. Go to the source.

        • Bella says:

Please don’t leave mate, you’ve kept me more informed about the dirty goings-on of politics in this country than even JB & it’s pretty clear we’ve lost his brilliant comments as well.

Just stay D but I’m guessing those degrading personal accusations made up your mind.
          My best, Bella 🐬💚☹

  • Dismayed says:

More evidence, facts and data why the corporate tax cuts are a terrible idea and proving hanson and phony are ridiculous and should not be in the senate. No surprises.

Why then has Dutton been given what appears to be unlimited power to make such stupid statements without any clearance?
Another class A dunce from the ranks of this odious government.
