Humble servant of the Nation

Shorten’s cunning stunt

We should be grateful to Labor, Bill Shorten and Chris Bowen for one thing at least. They have switched the Canberra vaudeville to off at least for a few days and taken the nation to a place where we can once again discuss the relative merits and deficits of government and opposition rather than standing aghast at the tawdry comings and goings in the nation’s capital.

Indeed, it was such an abrupt departure from the freak show that one cartoonist, musing on the difficulties of drawing a cartoon on the humour free zone of franking credits yesterday, took to social media to implore Barnaby Joyce to “do something.”

Let’s start with what Shorten’s announcement isn’t. It isn’t taxation reform in any substantial way. The Australian taxation system is and will continue to be unnecessarily complex and complicated, an ongoing garden party for accountants and lawyers but dismally incomprehensible to almost every other Australian.

A week or so ago I joked that Shorten’s media advisers should instruct him to have a long lie in, go into the office late, take the rest of the day off and continue to do so until the next election. Cynically, this is perhaps Shorten’s best pathway to the Lodge.

Before the last election, Labor determined to get a lot of policy into the public domain and while they fell short of forming government, the view is the party’s strategy was the right one. After the 2013 landslide win for the Coalition, Labor’s policy rollout in 2016 put them within one seat of forming minority government.

The Shorten tax proposal is more of the same with an eye to the next federal election.

As Adam Creighton observed in today’s Australian, “Australia’s tax system is shockingly tilted in favour of older, wealthier people, with little justification. Without a proper overhaul, in an era of stagnant wage growth and elevated house prices, that only fuels resentment.”

Labor’s proposals mine that resentment deep and hard. The government’s rhetoric then and now of a Shorten-Labor faux class war does not paint even half the picture. The old resentments between haves and have nots certainly exist and are palpable in the electorate but they find deeper expression across generational divides, among those who despair about housing affordability in the major capital cities with inflation stalking tepid wage growth.

Put succinctly, if by soulless marketing demographics, Shorten’s approach pits Baby Boomers v the rest — the Millennials, the Gen X-ers, the Gen Y-ers and whatever other absurd monikers the marketing folk attach to people these days. Whatever, the iron laws of arithmetic tell us there are more of them than there are of the boomers and in politics, that is enough to win elections.

The take home message is that Labor believes self-funded retirees do not as a rule vote Labor and the political consequences are likely to be minimal. Little downside, lots of upside is the prevailing view within the party at this point in the political cycle.

Labor’s proposal pushes the government further into a corner. Malcolm Turnbull knows he cannot get his company tax cuts through the Senate and has gone to a Plan B of personal income tax cuts but these will come at the expense of adding to the budget deficit and with it, the government’s claims of superior economic stewardship become sorely tested. Ongoing personal tax cuts of any impressive magnitude are almost impossible to fund without wholesale tax reform. The government will be left to tinker at the edges, leaving a benefit to average wage-earning folk of the packet of Chicken Twisties and can of diet Coke variety.

Bear in mind, the 2018-19 Budget will almost certainly be the Turnbull government’s last before the next election. A half Senate election is due no later than 19 May, 2019 (the Reps by 2 November, 2019) and one very much doubts the Turnbull government would create a circumstance where the punters would be obliged to trudge off to the polls twice in one year. Just as likely is a federal election in the latter part of this year.

To paraphrase Black Adder, Bill Shorten has “a plan so cunning you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel.” And without wanting to press the Vaudeville activation button, that weasel is Chris Bowen. Bowen is cast from the NSW right, an economic policy wonk and Keating acolyte. While he is invariably across his brief, it is his skills as a salesman that often fall short.

The reforms-that-aren’t approach is bold, and boldness or courage is not always rewarded in politics as it often veers into callow stupidity when the numbers are scrutinised and fall short or the government of the day spends each and every day picking the policy off to the point where an opposition is left befuddled and paralysed with embarrassment.

But if Chris Bowen can pull it off, Labor has just taken a step closer to forming the next government.

Sorry old son but I get VERY exasperated when Morrison and Conman keep telling Sabra Lane and Fran Kelly that Labor have always been the biggest taxers. An often repeated and outright lie as the figures I drafted demonstrate. There have been only 7 yrs in budget history where the tax to GDP ratio has been over 23.5%. And yes all 7 were during Liberal governments terms. .When they used to try The Big Tax Lie on Emma Alberici she was right on to them in a very polite kinda way. I wish Fran and Sabra would do some effing homework when they interview these two spinners! Morrison and Conman go unchallenged on their own shocking recoed debt as well as being the highest taxers and spenders ever. It seems the Looters have them conned with the mass sackings, cuts to ABC…. Sabra and Fran are afraid to ask any searching questions of these two clowns.

Go Vlad Putin in todays Russian Federation “Elections”, Mr Insider. Whoops hang on the “field looks amazingly sparse, Vlad would have to be 1000 to 1 on to win! Very sad when the human rights of peoples are trampled on like this. Shame Vlad you malingerer and fake!

Fibre optic cable installed for Comms games. SA Labor had a plan to the same for the CBD of Adelaide. Without this Fibre Optic cable. the next 5 Gens and 6 Gens etc., the newer technologies will Not work properly. The rest of the country will have to continue at even greater $cost$ to overbuild the MT coalitions Mixed Technologies NBN (Not Broadband Network). No surprises.

JTI I would like to formally request that razor’s accusation that I am some sort of peadophile for providing quality training facilities to young Australians be removed. It is not a joke or even remotely humorous. Several of these young who have gone on to represent their state , Australia and some have received scholarships to the US. The cowardly personal stuff does not concern me. this type of thing from razor continues even after your more than clear message recently.

    • Jack The Insider says:

It was poor and I should not have published. My apologies. Razor, don’t pull that shit ever again. If I have to go through everyone’s comments as I have to with yours and a few others now, you are adding to my workload not to mention my legal liability. Take some fucking responsibility for what you type. We won’t be having this conversation again.

      • Razor says:

No problems JTI my apologies to you. I had resisted all week until the personal attacks on Dwight, Yvonne, Carl and others continued.

        • Dismayed says:

There were no personal attacks from me on anyone. They would not have been published if there were. Your dishonesty is pathological. You just proved again all you have is excuses.

      • Dismayed says:

JTI. I sincerely hope you continue this blog. It has been a great place for over a decade now. I thank you for allowing me to express opinions and have the odd very forthright “discussion”. I know you will be successful in your challenge and as above do not want to add to your load. I do sincerely thank you for the time and efforts.

        • Tracy says:

          With advance apologies Jack.
Dismayed what do you mean “odd very forthright discussion” I don’t think there’s a single person here that you haven’t been rude to, boorish, ungracious, disrespectful and ill mannered, whether they are addressing a comment to you or not.

          • Boadicea says:

            Thank you, Tracy. Well said.

          • Dismayed says:

Your opinion is your own. It is not rude to disagree. you cons are always hard done by persecuted and victims after attacking first. it is in your dna. I find it boorish and ungracious of you to make such false and misleading comments. It is clear you are supporting an individual who made another baseless accusation this time about me being a paedophile because I help young people to become healthy and fit. This says a lot about you. It says a lot about those supporting razor and then ignoring JTI’s message last week.

          • Penny says:

I agree Tracy, however I do note that when Dismayed does initiate a post, he is often attacked simply for putting across an alternative view. That’s when he responds by getting personal. I don’t think his responses are appropriate either, but there seems to be a gang mentality developing on this blog where there’s one in, all in and some of the insults and name calling are far worse than what Dismayed comes up with. Diverse opinions aren’t encouraged any more and humour is actively discouraged. I’ve said before we’ve lost a lot of people in this blog and I fear we will lose more if the shrill voices of conformity get their way.
There are times when I have endured insults both on this blog and privately as a result of a comment I have made that someone has vehemently disagreed with and I have not gone away, but wouldn’t blame people who have.
JTI should not have to check every comment that is posted, we should all and I mean ALL know where to draw the line.

            • Razor says:

Well Penny let me say there is only one person on this blog who has demonstrated he is completely without humour. As for him only responding to others, have you seriously looked at the last two blogs? He initiates most of the crap. Would you like me to point to examples? Look at his replies to posts, which have nothing about him in them, to Carl, Boa, Milton and Dwight.

Seriously Penny diversity in opinion is encouraged here. Do you get abused? Does Bassy? Does JB? People do get sick of the shrill, generalised comments where he assumes anyone who disagrees with him are ‘Cons’. Even when from time to time people agree with him he cannot help himself. Read his replies and his stuff with both eyes open. Particularly note the generalisations, the way he compartmentalises people and the tone of his comments. The seething hate for anything not left of Stalin.

There have been people who no longer come to this blog but by my calculation they seemingly were those of the centre or right of centre. Now why do you think that might be?

              • Penny says:

Yes I have been abused on this blog Razor and not by Dismayed. Don’t forget I had to pull out of footy tipping because I was getting abusive emails…..it was suggested by someone in here that that was probably where they were coming from.
The personal things I have seen written to Dismayed often refer to his family, his perceived background, his lack of friends, his ignorance of his job etc. etc. I would prefer that he didn’t react, but he does and even when he posts something reasonably interesting he is jumped on. Bullying works when done by a lot of people and what is precisely what is being done here. If JTI didn’t want him on the blog he wouldn’t let his posts through, I doubt Dismayed has driven people away, it may be because people outgrew the blog. When the topic gets hijacked by people who think theirs is the only opinion that matters and cry foul when someone differs, that’s when people lose interest.

            • Boadicea says:

Sorry Penny, but I disagree. If there is a ”gang mentality” developing I think you’ll find it’s because many folk here are sick and tired of being referred to as wilfully ignorant, pathological liars, victims, you cons, nursing home inhabitants, etc etc It is spoiling the blog.. There comes a time when enough is enough, one explodes, and then we get fed this ”forthright discussion, front bar stuff” – and self aggrandising ”oh I’m so noble” sooky posts.
It is self-inflicted. If he put his point forward without denigrating others he may find it has more effect.
I am not looking for an argument – I am fond of everyone here and get pleasure out of the daily musings. I hope it comes good.

              • Penny says:

Fair enough Boa and I see where you’re coming from. BUT I do think a gang mentality did develop and there were personal things said to Dismayed that went way beyond what he has said to people, irritating though his comments may be . That was my point. I loath bullying of any kind and that was what was developing here. Hopefylly it is all over. I agree with JS that sometimes we should read what we have written first and then maybe reword it so that it doesn’t sound too aggressive. Like you and Bella and most of us I would say, I too enjoy this blog very much, obviously as I have been contributing since the very early days, I took great delight reading it when I lived in Kuwait, then Morocco and here in Penang because it keeps me in touch with what’s going on in and what people are thinking in Australia. One thing I learned from those days, if you really dislike someone on this blog, don’t read their posts. Worked for me in the early days….don’t need to do it now.

          • Milton says:

It’s the unrelenting boorishness that is tiresome, Tracy. And his response to you is simply perverse and twisted. He seems to think it fine to suggest that I have alcohol related health problems that would effect those around me; a disgusting accusation from someone who knows me not. It seems he can dish it out and not take it. Moreover he thinks people who respond to this thread are simply supporting Razor, when his personal abuse is widespread and then he plays little victim.

        • Razor says:

Don’t worry little man. Subsequent to your heartfelt, self aggrandising appeal to JTI its noted your personal abuse to others on this blog has continued. You complain to the teacher but have no personal insight into your own behaviour!

Surely nothing wrong with that observation JTI.

          • Dismayed says:

you continue to oroject your own failings razor. do you have some issue with little people now also? That too is just you projecting your own short comings again.

        • Dwight says:

So, here’s the deal. Stop calling people names. Engage in intellectual discussion. If you can’t bring yourself to do that, walk away.

          • Dismayed says:

It says a lot about you Dwight that you support razor after he made weak and baseless accusation that because I help young Australians get fit and healthy I am a paedophile. This says more about you and the others that support him than any of your false statements.

          • Penny says:

Dwight, look I normally agree with you but I’ve seen some pretty derogatory things said to Dismayed, mainly about his familyhaving to endure his miserable company (one comment even wished harm on them) and how he has no friends etc.etc. I actually don’t call that intellectual discussion either.
When the blog attracts a lot of comments, these nasty posts slip through.
In a few weeks this blog will not be published at all for a while, perhaps it might be a good time for everyone to take a step back and seriously think about what we want to write about and try and accept other people’s point of view. Dismayed is not the only one to call people names, you might not have noticed it, but I have.
We all might find that JTI can’t be bothered with the blogs until everybody pulls their socks up, not just Dismayed

            • Milton says:

I’ve responded to some in kind to some of his nonsense, Penny and I can assure that way back in time I did not instigate the crap. I’ve long had digs back and forward with a whole host of people with differing views and still manage to maintain civil discourse with them. Trust me, if Dwight has gets the hump it is not he who has started with the negative, personal stuff. And yes, it would be a shame for this blog to end due to something as petty and pathetic as this. At least in the old days the abuse was sharp, fresh and imaginative and more often than not, hit the spot!

            • Razor says:

So racial comments with regard to Yvonne are OK Penny? How about inferring Milton is an alcoholic? Dwight some sort of American gun nut? Carl having dementia? Should we go with the ageism instead? Anyone, regardless of their community work, who disagrees with him on financial matters is just trying to line their own pockets. Seriously Penny you have to be kidding.

I stick it to him because I hate bullies and I’ve got personal because in my experience that’s what bullies hate. You can see that by the way he whinges to JTI.

              • Dismayed says:

I said I preferred Rhodesians the Seth Efricaans. If you and other take that personally you have other serious issues that need addressing. razor you are pathologically dishonest and continue to prove it. Even when trying to make a point you have to lie. poor from but all that is expected from you. poor form.

            • Bella says:

I’m with you Penny & let’s all appreciate the time JTI gives us all, day after day. 💚

It seems the Greens are fast disintegrating. One has to ask the question if Di Natale is the right leader for them?
Well, with Batman out of the way what is Shorten’s approach to Adani going to be this week?

    • smoke says:

Greens?? what are they? pro open border environmentalists?

    • Henry Blofeld says:

The Greens in a state of fast decline, Boadicea. A complete “makeover” required in Policy and Personnel methinks. Goodbye Sarah Hanson- Young and all those like her no one takes any notice of. Cheers

      • Boadicea says:

Yes , it’s hard to see where they go from here, HB. Di Natale seems unable to muster them

        • Razor says:

Always a problem for them Boa. The clash of the old style environmentalists, who I consider great for Australian politics and the red hot marxists. It was never going to end pretty. Believe it or not even I had a soft spot for Bob Brown on occasions.

  • Tracy says:

Think it’s more of a case of the Greens stuffing Batman with the infighting rather than Labor winning.
More seriously Liang Xiangyi, the journalist who did the infamous eye roll after Xi’s elevation hasn’t been heard from since according to The Times.

Jack, I put an on-topic (!) post up on Friday twice and it didn’t appear. Can’t see any controversy in it? Did it get as far as you?
