The simple fact overlooked in Serena Williams fallout

It’s a tricky move to attach gender or race motives to an umpire officiating a tennis match between two women: one Afro-American, the other half-Japanese, half-Haitian but one by one, too many members of the commentariat to count worked overtime to pull it off.

In the morass of Op-Eds scrawled in the wake of the US women’s Open final, focus quickly became lost and one rather simple fact was ignored:

The umpire is always right.

Take this tweet from ABC presenter, Virginia Trioli. She claimed to have read almost all there was to read about what had happened and only then had been moved to judgment by way of retweet with comment. The retweet was of a judgy columnist, Margaret Sullivan, who splatters words around for the Washington Post and the New York Times, sometimes in some recognisable order. She, in turn, was tweeting up a rapidly cobbled together think piece from Sally Jenkins at WaPo. Jenkins, Sullivan enthused, got it “exactly right.”

What a moron Shorten is. Turnbull is gone, full stop. No one cares for the reason, and if one was provided it would be a nonsense, satisfying no one. With the goings on of late a half decent alternative would be a lay down misere. Alas, not Bill. A shifty dud and recognised as such. Who knows, Morrison could win this one, or save a few of the chaise lounges as he has a bit of mongrel in him, is conservative, relatively clean, not a waffling populist like Turnbull and not one to be spoken over by journalists, or have them put words into his mouth. Some of the questions by journalists these days seem to be all about them, with their verbose preambles and false presumptions.

You’re not taking the implosion of the Liberal Party at all well are you, you poor boy.
And you kept telling us how good it would be “when the adults are in charge.”
      Hohohohoho, embarrassamento mucho!

    • Dismayed says:

Rupert has spoken. he is happy to install Labor for 3 years he and the other media tycoons have it all covered.. morrison is a serial liar and is incapable of being honest. No Surprises.

      • Jack The Insider says:

Utter bullshit coming from Fairfax, the Guardian etc. I’ve said this many times. I work for Rupert’s company so I should know. I am never told what to write, nor urged to emphasise one mob over the other. It simply doesn’t happen.

        • Dismayed says:

Why did half of Murdoch’s staff quit in 1975 after he told them to kill the Whitlam government?
JTI why do all the PM’s visit with Rupert shortly before or after they get the job? How can you believe one media organisation owning 70% of media does not influence both other media outlets and politics.
I did not suggest you were being handled or directed by the way.

          • Jack The Insider says:

I wasn’t around in 1975 so I can’t tell you other than question your assertions. Half of Murdoch’s staff quit? Really, where did you read that? What about the figure strikes you as credible? Look, mate. You can listen to people like me who work for News Corp or you can believe the gibberish that is being written by other media organisations. I’ve been around for a while and when I told you other media orgs have much stricter editorial controls, that is they actually tell journalists what to write about and what slant to take, and yet, this goes straight through to the keeper with you. No pennies dropping. I can tell you for a fact that the media you consume is more highly managed than it is at News Corp but you won’t believe me because it challenges your prejudices.

Goodness me Mr. Insider, does appear watching QT that Kenny Wyatt, the Aged Care Minister, now knows a lot about the many disgraceful problems in Aged Care Nursing Homes.
Strewth it was only a short while ago he said they were running beautifully and that Labor was only muckraking! Such a sweet caring story he bullshitted us with today in QT!
Chuck it in Kenny the jig is up fellow.

  • Milton says:

CotC – 68-30 hey, I heard something like that. That would be a 2/3 rds majority. Hardly a disendorsement!

    • Tracy says:

Not the point Milt, he used to romp it.
There is a rumour that Michael Reagan might run as an Independent but suspect rumour is all it is, elected mayor for Norther Beaches council last year and it’s a two year term.

      • JackSprat says:

“There will not be any rate increase until 2020” Regan and what did we get – 7%?
        No way penny.
His missus would be a better bet – she rules the roost.

      • JackSprat says:

No way Tracy – sorry to both of you.

      • Lou oTOD says:

Michael Regan has fallen on his arse with the best political job in Australia Tracy, as emperor of the Northern Beaches. You wont get him out of that gig with dynamite.

        • Tracy says:

My husband is part of the strategic reference group for Northern Beaches (IT) he was a bit cynical about it when he stuck his hand up but he said it’s been better than he thought.
One way to have your say on future planning, think it’s only for twelve months with quarterly meetings before they do it all again for the following year.

  • Milton says:

Forget quotas, according to republicans, leftie, green labor types, our head of state for decades has been a sheila (the Queen) and they have been trying to get rid of her for years (and mainly by bullying).

  • Trivalve says:

Apropos of not much, did anyone notice Pauline Hanson’s comment at the end of Insiders on Sunday noting that climate change has been going on for ‘centuries’ and that it was known to be caused by the Sun and *the Moon*. Fantastic work that! The word ‘loony’ comes to mind.

  • Milton says:

Are you going to THE BIG GAME, Trivalve? As a neutral I’d like to see the pies get up … and then lose in the final. No doubt all the smart money is for the tigers to win the GF.

    • Milton says:

With what’s left I’m going for Melbourne Demons.

    • Perentie says:

I wouldn’t mind if Collingwood won (pause, while I recover from giving myself an uppercut). I quite like the way they go about it. Maybe they’re not so bad after all. Or maybe because they play in the same competition as Port Adelaide and Essendon, it just seems that way.

    • Trivalve says:

I wish. But a hopeless case getting a ticket. They could nearly fill the G twice if every member got one. I reckon this Friday is a game for the ages – two legendary old school Vic teams, Pies on the comeback trail, all the history, all the drama. Hope it lives up to the hype and the Tiges don’t get flogged. This, if the Weagles win on Saturday, will be the ‘real’ grand final.

I say, Mr. Insider that Kim Jong-un chappie really needs some new Clobber, he looks like a vagabond just seeing him welcoming the chap from South Korea.
Maybe Donald can get him “kitted” out when he visits the USA, the old Chairman Mao look very “yesterday” imho.

Doesn’t sound much different to how things wash out now, here.
If I was the benevolent dictator of The Australian Socialist Republic that’s just the sort of system I would have in place.
Oh, and a Homeland Security Act too. I’d want to arrest and detain indefinitely anyone I deemed to be a terrorist risk at any time I wanted to, without having to explain to them or anyone else why I was doing it, or even telling anyone I had done it.

You just keep your nose clean JS and you wont have anything to worry about.

  • Carl on the Coast says:

Bet you don’t see Dismayed applauding this one.
Wages rising faster than living costs, professor says – The Australian
    https://www.theaustralian.com.au › business › economics

    • Dismayed says:

cotc. sigh. You really have no clue do you. Wages have stagnated for 6 years. the “growth” shown in the report was over a 10 year cycle. i.e. the growth in wages occurred before your conservative coalition was elected, supported cutting penalty rates and is now looking to increase the income required for people to receive Super contribution because business has worked out they can reduce peoples hours employ another casual worker and not to have pay super or entitlements for any of them, your cons are have encouraged “labour hire” agreements that pay “casuals” up to 30% less than normal full time workers in the same roles then ramped up immigration to record levels and opened up many more avenues for slave labour visa’s.
cotc. you are getting more detached from actualities the more your toxic conservative party implodes. No Surprises.

      • Carl on the Coast says:

Carl on the Coast says: “Bet you don’t see Dismayed applauding this one.”

Dismayed says: “cotc. sigh. You really have no clue do you. cotc. you are getting more detached from actualities the more your toxic conservative party implodes.”

Yep, just as I suggested, no applause. Taking candy from a baby springs to mind.

        • Dismayed says:

cotc. you are delusional. you need more help than the aged care sector due to cuts from your conservative coalition can manage, the cuts to the disability sector will also not allow you the treatment you so obviously need. Move along cotc your willful ignorance disgusts me.

        • Jean Baptiste says:

But I fear Dismayed is right you really are detached Carl, WTF was that all about?

          • Carl on the Coast says:

Detached, unbiased, unprejudiced, impartial, non-partisan? Yes, I’d go along with that. But I’m a tad disappointed the chap with the permanent bee in his bonnet has so easily sucked you in JB. Do have a quiet word with him me old mate. Perhaps a biliary dilatation is in order.

            • Jean Baptiste says:

Quiet word for Dismayed. They are geriatric nut cases Dismayed, if their brains were dynamite they wouldn’t have enough to blow the wax out of their ears, but I admire your spirit and persistence.

              Give ’em heaps.

    • Jean Baptiste says:

Oh goody. I might just nip out and buy a couple of houses while I’m thinking about it.

      • JackSprat says:

Begging in the Baptiste Socialist Republic pays that much JB?

If you are really good according to the facial recognition technology, you will get a 1 metre square piece of plastic every 6 months.
By the time it rains and if you buy some glue you will be able to make a little tent to keep you dry.

    • smoke says:

Listen carefully and hear theRBA not applauding either

    • Bella says:

I can’t get the link Carl but notice how only that newspaper does the applauding? 😉
