IF you’re like me, you’re sick to death of the Barnaby Joyce story already and it has only been out there for little more than a day.

And oh, how the Op-Eds rolled out, like a torrent spewed out by the terabyte.

What we might kindly call the new media babbled on about conspiracies between the press gallery and the parliament. Democracy denied was the collective shriek, as if the readers of these inner-city websites were exclusively the denizens of New England.

Joyce won New England with a 7 per cent swing and if an election was held in his seat tomorrow my best guess is he would win by a similar margin.

Even during the campaign Twitter knew. I knew and I didn’t care. Indeed, during the New England by-election campaign, mainstream media reported Joyce was no longer living at the family home. Any journalist worth his or her salt could have chased the story down.

I’ve no idea about the thoughts of those “Looter” women Bassy but having watched this horror unfold, this woman has a view that may not be a popular one.
No child should be born to die or know no other life than starvation and persecution and these poor souls must not be blamed for conceiving, after all they’ve been denied education or health options, however, I want to know where’s the UN or Amnesty on putting contraception on the table. I do realise that forced birth control is taking away a fundamental human right but the child has rights also.
As a mother I’d die a thousand deaths before I’d put him in harms way but I live a cushy Australian life. They don’t have that option, let alone expect to care for another new life each year if this hideous situation continues.
Personally mate, a few years ago I’d despair that the whole world was fumbling with the pretense of wanting to be ‘seen’ as caring but now I think no-one actually wants to step outside their insular lives & really take-in this brutal crisis. Any semblance of humanity, once valued above everything, has been gradually stubbed out.
We have so called world ‘leaders’ who simply absolve themselves of any responsibility when lost human beings need saving.
    Shame on all of them.

    • BASSMAN says:

Don’t forget Dutton shed tears for a bloke on 2GB the other day….none for the 6 deaths, mental torture rapes and beatings those have suffered on Manus though-yes, those who have committed no crime and are genuine refugees. Then we have the Looters lying that the boats have started up again because there may be a Labor govt elected. They have no policies so they have to feed us this and of course ‘we have lost control of our borders’.

      • Razor says:

Only if Labor is elected will we again lose control of our borders Bassy.

        • BASSMAN says:

We have never lost control of our borders you Drongo.

          • Razor says:

50000 boat arrivals isn’t losing control? Are you kidding! People who had enough money to escape unlike the poor buggers in the camps.

            • BASSMAN says:

More than that overstay their visas every year
Why don’t U go on about those? They are the real ‘illegals’ And no-we have not lost control of our borders.

              • Milton says:

How many of them die on their way here, Bassy. You’ve come over all sympathetic re the people on Nauru/Manus yet callously ignore or conveniently forget those that drowned at sea. A mate of mine worked with refugees on Nauru and said the worst part about it was the heat. The conditions for the refugees were good.

                • The Outsider says:

Milton, I get how turning back boats lowers the number of deaths in Australian waters, but does it really stop people drowning at sea?

      • Carl on the Coast says:

Careful BASSY, lest you loose your objectivity, coming up with such melodramatic comments.

  • BASSMAN says:

Joyce MUST step down next week or he will be made to. He should not wait for the tap on the shoulder. He is gone! More importantly, it brings Turnbulls lack of judgement into question. Indeed, another Godwin Grech moment for him. Misappropriation of taxpayer funds to give Joyce’s sweetheart a well-paid gig! This won’t help Turnbull in Batman Bald. Below a choice example of Joyce’s callousness.

    • Tracy says:

Joyce ( like most pollies) won’t go without a fight, Labor need to very very careful about this as well after all they were squeaky clean on citizenship weren’t they……..not.
The phrase “it was within the guidelines” gets bandied around a lot in Canberra and let’s face it when the proverbial hits the fan they circle the wagons.

      • Jack The Insider says:

Labor won’t play or play very hard. This is with the media now.

        • Lou oTOD says:

Oh contrare JTI. Tania Plibersek has come out today all guns blazing on the jobs for girls front, saying they will pursue Barnaby with vigour this week.

I guess the morality arguement would be more difficult to push in the cesspool of history on all sides of parliament.

          • Jack The Insider says:

Sure, questions in parliament, a few doorstops. But the real pressure is coming from the media. The govt has lost control of it. One more revelation and they’ll cut him loose.

            • Penny says:

And there’s a few more relevations yet to come. Tanya is only pursuing the jobs that were made available for the girlfriend, not the affair itself…..and so she should

              • Razor says:

Absolutely Penny! Tania is playing it perfectly. This is not about the affair it’s about any misuse of taxpayer funds or any preferential treatment. Either of those pop up he’s gotta go and to be honest I think there’s enough already re the jobs. As Bassy says if those jobs weren’t advertised or at least an EOI circulated then something’s crook in Tullarook.

            • BASSMAN says:

Labor’s target is Turnbull. The CWA ladies and the rest of the
ultra conservative Un Nationals will see Joyce off. That said, he is not the only one playing up. His sin was 1. Parading it 2. Getting caught

Its a boy! With 4 daughters that will make his day-probably chuck politics in to go to some $800,000 job like the other 2 Looters did. Rob and Gravel Throat.

      • BASSMAN says:

…….aren’t public service jobs supposed to be advertised?

Expect to hear terms like ‘guidelines have been followed; ‘nothing untoward’; ‘all appointments are based on merit’.
He is still a goner…his enemies will see to that. Love to hear what old Wal Trussrod is saying!

      • Razor says:

Currently in Canberra Tracy and it’s bloody hot!

  • Trivalve says:

The Twitter hashtag #BeetRooter has emerged. There’s a red stain that’ll be hard to shift.

  • Henry Blofeld says:

I say, Mr Insider, Kim Jong-un invites South Korean President Moon to Pyongyang! Strewth, I wonder does POTUS Trump know about this as he hinted some time ago Kimmie may soon be strolling with him across the lawns of the White House. Its a fast moving world we live in , blink and you miss it.

    • Jack The Insider says:

Hard to know what is going on and what Jong-Un is up to. Off the top of my head, I’d say it is an attempt to divide the US-Sth Korean alliance.

  • BASSMAN says:

The Bonking Beetroot has to go. The Un National Party is all about staid conservatism-scones and cream at the local CWA Hall under a framed picture of the Queen, no mini dresses or Jimmy Barnes raging in the background. Family values, the sanctity of marriage and the close family unit as the rock solid basis of our society and culture. JOYCE HAS BETRAYED ALL OF THESE VALUES and could never again walk into any CWA Hall to sup on rubber chicken legs and cream scones. Seems to be a re-run of Sinker’s career. He always had fresh meat on the side. Add jobsongrowth for the young lady and it is all over Red Rover for The Beetroot. Wonder what Annie thinks of her man now?

  • jack says:

this looks promising, a new Hawke doco.

    goo.gl/mX5vgu

I recall him getting the father of the year award, it did create a fair bit of laughter in the ALP at the time.

The media left his private life largely alone, as they did the Evans Kernot affair. In fact i think that would have remained a secret except Ms Kernot wrote a memoir which pointedly ignored it.

I don’t think there have ever been rules about this sort of thing, the media treat the decision to follow the story on a case by case basis, and they probably always will.

I agree with Dwight on this, to me it is as bit strange to decide your vote on whether the candidate can find his own front door, but of course everyone is entitled to vote how they like for whatever reason they want.

JTI is right, some good people avoid the political life because they don’t want to live in a fishbowl, or to have their families do likewise.

I think Stephen Hawke changed his name for a while to avoid the scrutiny.

    • Tracy says:

I think the point is Jack (as TBLS pointed out) they are always telling us what we should be doing/thinking etc and so forth and as such shouldn’t they be held to the same standards of behaviour.

    • Lou oTOD says:

Stephen Hawke went to live in an Aboriginal community in the Kimberley for thirteen years Jack, that’s a real attempt at annonymity. Even then the rumour mill chased him, the most active of which was that he declared himself Aboriginal by association, thus receiving the relevant social welfare.

    • Penny says:

Jack, one of my friends went to school with the eldest Hawke daughter and another one worked with the younger daughter at Ansett in Canberra……father of the year he wasn’t. Still it doesn’t take away from his political skills, sadly Baaanaby has none.

      • jack says:

Penny, Hawke was a great politician. Interesting that the two best retail politicians i can recall both had a marital fidelity by-pass.

Tracy, i never take any notice of politicians, or actors or TV people or journos for that matter, telling me how i should be living my life.

  • Not Finished Yet says:

I am sure JTI is right when he says that Barnaby would still be returned easily now. And that is because the Nationals are not really the people the rest of Australia thinks they are. Perhaps I should explain.

Five years ago I spent a year working on a project as part of a small team and one of my colleagues was a woman with a degree in natural resource management. One Friday after work she was telling us about her university experiences at a campus that had two schools, one being agricultural science, the other natural resource management. She thought it was ironic that those studying natural resource management were seen as ‘lefties’ or ‘greenies’ but in their private lives, with only a couple of exceptions, they were either in committed relationships or were indeed celibate. Cory and Tony could only have approved of their private lives. On the other hand, the agricultural science students, the upholders of traditional conservative values, were with one or two exceptions ‘wildly promiscuous’, to use her exact wording. Those that were not already members of the National Party soon would be.

Barnaby is in Nationals heartland and is in his element.

  • Tracy says:

Tony Windsor is having a fine old time on his Twitter feed, pointing the finger while not quite pointing the finger.
Thought this was interesting from Julia Baird http://www.smh.com.au/comment/the-remarkable-privilege-of-being-a-male-politician-20180209-h0vtwc.html
Seems to be the only thing Cheryl is remembered for.

    • Trivalve says:

Even more interesting is the second paragraph of the piece which originally said this:
“if it were, say Barbara – or Joyce – Joyce, a married female party leader and deputy prime minister who impregnated a younger staffer, the story would have been pursued with great vigour and determination months ago.”

      Spot the mistake!

      • Tracy says:

Yep saw that, whoever does the proof reading was not paying attention.
As an aside this may also end up applying to Natalie Joyce, “I am just focused on helping those affected by the ever-changing landscape of my ex-husband’s life, to navigate it“ Cassandra Thorburn.
And yes, the drones were brilliant at the opening ceremony

      • Dwight says:

That story would have been a headline around the globe. The CDC and WHO would both have teams in the air to see this. Maybe even three wisemen.

    • Carl on the Coast says:

Tracy, I thought Julia Baird’s article was fair comment. I agree, it does seem that female pollies generally, including those who get caught up in workplace dalliances get the rough end of the stick (if I may use such a phrase) especially from members of the press and male pollies. I particularly take issue with the late Don Randall’s categorisation of Cheryl Kernot as having ‘the morals of an alley cat’.

The poor cats don’t get off lightly either .

Again, politicians and the press are the main culprits. For example, at budget time they always talk about a ‘dead cat bounce’. And they bell cats, let them out of the bag, skin them, herd them, swing them and put them amongst the pigeons.

Yes, those fat cats in Canberra have a lot to answer for.

  • wraith says:

Little bit of read between the lines reporting here, the ABC already calling Natalie a divorcee, hum, there hasnt been a divorce, legally the poor women is still married to the turd. Quote from ABC “He already has four girls with his former wife Natalie Joyce.”
Only Natalie doesnt describe herself that way, and still calls it “my husband”. Quote from ABC “I am deeply saddened by the news that my husband has been having an affair and is now having a child with a former staff member,” she said.
    .
You know she sacrificed her own career to give the little purple creep his dream. So sad.
