Humble servant of the Nation

Finding David Feeney

I have a rule when it comes to recently fallen politicians. Don’t stick the slipper in after they’ve left the arena. It’s unseemly and a touch callous.

I figure once they’ve moved, often ignominiously, out of the line of fire, they become non-combatants.

Truth be told, it’s more of a guideline. Happily, readers, in the case of the existentially forgetful and terminally hapless David Feeney, I am prepared to make an exception.

David Feeney resigned as the member for Batman yesterday. Sadly, he misplaced his letter of resignation. He did show the media a bus ticket he has had in his wallet since 1993. He’s going home now. Wherever that is.

Some of Feeney’s colleagues offered trite condolences and tepid expressions of support yesterday but it was impossible not to notice the gritted teeth. In Adelaide yesterday, deputy leader, Tanya Plibersek, said Feeney had made a “fine contribution” to the party but when asked if he was resigning, replied, “I’ll let David speak for himself.”

Praise any fainter than that would be in an induced coma.

In 1983 Batman was the safest Labor seat in the country, safer even than Bob Hawke’s seat of Wills just across St George’s Road. Batman has been in Labor hands since 1934, save a brief period when former Labor member for Batman, Sam Benson, was expelled from the party over his continued support for the Vietnam War. Benson won the seat as an independent in 1966 only to lose it narrowly to the colourful former Collingwood mayor, Horrie Garrick in 1969. Horrie, dragged the seat back to the safest end of the Labor pendulum until he got rolled in a preselection barney and was replaced by Brian Howe in 1977.

Now it will go to the Greens in a by-election which could be held as early as March 10. The only thing that got Feeney over the line in 2016 was Liberal preferences. The Libs will almost certainly run dead in the by-election and that will be that for Labor’s long and occasionally illustrious history in Batman.

As we’ve seen in the seat of Melbourne, when Labor loses to the Greens in an inner-city electorate, those seats don’t come back.

Brian Howe was the last genuine local to represent Labor in Batman.

He was a thoroughly decent man who became deputy Prime Minister in the Hawke-Keating governments. While he was Minister for Housing, he spent three months living in public housing to see for himself what the problems were and how they could be fixed. I’d say imagine that from a politician today but we all know it is unimaginable.

Say what you like about Howe’s successor, Martin Ferguson and he has many critics within the Labor Party, indeed to the point where the WA state branch moved to expel him four years ago. In my experience, the vowelless Mar’n was always accessible. When he was a shadow minister I would call him for a quote and a yarn and if you rang early enough, Mar’n would pick up the phone himself. No protective press secretaries or chiefs of staff acting as political bollards.

But the fact remains he was parachuted into the seat in a factional deal that rolled the locals. He wasn’t even a Melbourne bloke. These things matter. A political party can’t keep doing this without losing support from the grassroots and the punters.

When Feeney was elbowed in, in another slippery multi-factional deal that saw him go from the Senate to the Reps — from the vegetables to the animals — the local branches had been treated as door mats again. It was the beginning of the end.

I’ll call it now. Labor is gone in Batman. Ged Kearney might have stood a chance a decade ago but not now. The seat, once the jewel in the Labor crown, is never coming back.

Feeney has been the butt of many jokes and God knows, I’ve written plenty myself. In another time and under different circumstances he would have been a Labor hero. A campaign director with three state election wins under his belt — two in South Australia and one in Victoria where the Bracks government won by a record margin. A big parliamentary career beckoned.

Instead he leaves politics as a laughing stock with the once safest seat in the country about to slip through Labor’s hands.

Feeney is fated to walk the Earth, knocking on doors offering a polite if by now unnecessary political spiel to the punters, “Bill Shorten and the Labor team have some great policies. I’d like a moment of your time to talk about them. Also, is this my house?”

Y’know, Jack, much as I despise everything about Question Time, I’m thinking about booking a trip to Canberra, just in hope of being in the gallery as something momentous happens. Although the Reps is getting more promising by the hour, maybe I’ll drop in on the Senate. I’m pretty sure Molan is only just braking the urge to snot a Green.

  • Dismayed says:

How does a proposed fully automated coal mine produce 10K jobs a year. Especially after Adani’s own hand-picked economic expert, Jerome Fahrer from ACIL Allen consulting, told the Queensland Land Court in 2015 under oath that only 1,464 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs would be created by the project: Note that Fahrer made it abundantly clear that the 1,464 FTE jobs includes both direct employment through its own operations as well as jobs via the impacts on other industries. the lies continue from adani, the coalition and news

    • Bella says:

Mate, you & I both know there’s no mythical 10,000 jobs.
Adani’s marketing propaganda used that figure, to maximum effect, to get their grubby hands on Australian dollars quicker to refinance their $2B loan at Abbott Point. Fahrer effectively blew that strategy wide open & now they’ve turned to scheming & scamming their way around a blatent & serious fudging of their submitted report by hiding the truth of their environmental spill to avoid the fine.
Seventy percent of Australians are against what will be terminally destroyed in this state especially if this corrupt tax dodging company are given the green light.
Thi is the fight of our times & we’re nearing the end but lately I finally feel incredibly optimistic that the right result is imminent. ⏳

  • Carl on the Coast says:

I see the current Wall Street volatility wiped out over a trillion dollars off the US hedge funds, while the Poms have halved the hedge hog community in the UK.

  • wraith says:

    @ Triv
Thanks for the offer re Panama. Its a bit in the future Im afraid, there is way to much afoot at this end for me to run off awol, maybe a couple of years (sigh).

Meanwhile.. Barnaby Joyce, what an upstanding individual. Lies, lies and more lies. Even to his wife. And not smart enough to put a rubber sock on it!
I want his arse for the way he was up to his neck in the water scandals, but I doubt the Lying Libs will ever make good on that.
You are dirt y work Joyce, and you are not fit to represent us.

    • Dismayed says:

      Hear hear Wraith, hear hear.

    • Uncle Quentin says:

Typical cradle catholic, public piety, private prurience. Always go bareback, rush off to confession and get a brand new soul then go out and do it again. Remind you of someone? Joe Kennedy springs to my mind.
More and more do I agree with Lady Whiteadder, “Cold is Gods way of telling us to burn more catholics!”

    • Milton says:

Well certainly something was upstanding at some stage of the proceedings, wraith. Now there’s an unpleasant mental image that is not in the public interest.

  • Henry Blofeld says:

Elon Musk’s SpaceX today launched the Worlds biggest Rocket, Mr Insider, the Falcon Heavy Lift which blasted off from the same pad that Neil Armstrong did in ’69 when he went to the Moon. Elon Musk you “magnificent bastard”.

  • Dismayed says:

mad Barnaby’s bit on the side must have cost the taxpayer $$ thousands for all those “parliamentary business” trips. Seems the “conservative” like to sit in judgement as long as they are shielded from scrutiny. What sort of marriage was Barnaby supporting or not supporting ? was it a traditional one?

    • Carl on the Coast says:

Now you are getting into the gutter Dismayed.

      • Tracy says:

It’s a fair observation CotC, how much of the affair has been conducted on the taxpayers tab?
This is a bloke who was going on about the sanctity of marriage while trying to deny same sex couples their right to the same thing, rather ironic that he wanted his daughters to feel safe in a marriage with someone they can trust.

    • The Outsider says:

Barnaby’s entitled to his privacy on an essentially private matter, as long as it doesn’t impact on his work.

      • Jean Baptiste says:

Seems pretty damn public to me! And no, he’s not entitled, he is a representative paid by the public.

      • BASSMAN says:

I agreed for a day or 2 but changed my mind when I recalled all of the times he went on about family values, the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman (SSM debate) and how he sacrificed time with his girls so as he could pursue a political career. His ex will take a HUGE slice out of his millions!

        • Boadicea says:

She will be entitled to a fair whack of the spoils, Bassy.
I have known a few women who have picked themselves up, revived a previous career or gone on to further studies and never looked back.
I hope she can do that.

      • Uncle Quentin says:

No, if he is making a public stance on the sanctity of marriage, and how it will be threatened by same sex marriage, how the gardisal vaccine will cause promiscuity, how his daughters chance of a heterosexual marriage will be diminished if same sex marriage is allowed, and yet he is having a bit on the side, then we the punters are entitled to know, and the 4th estate has failed us big time on this.
We do not want to have a situation like in the UK where if you stray off the straight and narrow the tabloid media will have you for breakfast, but hypocrites must be outed.

      • wraith says:

Like Julia Gillard was treated with respect hey? Is your bloke a gay hairdresser.
Short memory, must have a short memory.

    • BASSMAN says:

Known amongst his colleagues I am told as The Bonking Beetroot

    • Boadicea says:

Give him a break. Your man Shorten isn’t squeaky clean in that regard either. Apparently half the press gallery is bonking politicians. So what.
His private life has nothing to do with any of us
Fact of life – sometimes a marriage fails

      • Jack The Insider says:

Half the press gallery? No. Not any as far as I know. That really would be a problem. The thing that hasn’t been reported is Barnaby got the flick from the family home because his affair became known to his wife. At almost the exact time, Barnaby was blathering about the sanctity of marriage. Personally, I don’t care a jot but it is hypocrisy straight out of the top drawer.

      • Penny says:

I’m a bit amazed how you know this stuff Boa. One minute you’re saying people deserve their privacy and how dare the media intrude, but then because you don’t like Bill Shorten you think you can come out with comments about his not being “squeaky clean” . Do tell us what you know, I’m fascinated

        • Boadicea says:

Um , it was very widely reported in the media at the the time, Penny. Thats how i know.
I also recall reading an in-depth article about the ex Mrs Shorten in the Australian Weekend Magazine a few years ago. She was not real impressed with her husband’s behaviour at the time. From a very wealthy, influential family she was, who got traded in for something even more upmarket – and she felt much the same as Joyce’s wife does now. Marriage breakups are not pretty.
I don’t know why you and Wraith feel i am supporting Joyce. I am merely pointing out that his behaviour is not the first incidence of this nature. I dont care what he does. His decision, his life. Not my electorate. Not our business. Which has been my position on all these sensational media revelations.
But for some reason you of the left think it okay to pour scorn on those with differing opinions – no matter what the subject.
Okay by me . I don’t care. I will not be steam-rollered from my opinion.

          • Penny says:

I didn’t read any of that in the media Boa, nor do I care. The real issue is the hypocrisy of one minute saying it’s none of our business and the next minute bringing in Bill Shorten and his wife Chloe. You either think it’s a travesty that someone’s personal life is brought out into the open or not. It’s also a pathetic argument to use the term “you of the left”, you constantly pour scorn on others opinions that are different to your own. What you need to do is sit back and read other people’s comments without feeling the need to comment on everything in reply. You complain about Dismayed ( a lot) but a couple of months ago, JTI allowed you to make a very long post listing every thing that was wrong with Dismayed and why you felt victimized. Dismayed can be annoying, he can be very rude and yes he does post a lot, but so do you. Be fair and give others a go at posting on topics they know about. I learn a lot from people on here, you might find you do too, if you can just stop getting on your high horse and crying foul when people disagree with you.

      • Not Finished Yet says:

Politicians are entitled to a private life, just like anyone else. But they are not entitled to a secret life. Yes, relationships can fail, in which case a decent person will end it with as much dignity as possible before starting something else. However, cheating on your spouse (while presumably lying to them) is not private, it is secret. Frankly, he deserves everything he gets and is unfit to be deputy PM. The fact that others are not perfect is not the point. He has my contempt.

    • Boadicea says:

…….and we won’t mention Tony Burke’s first class global trips with the PA either, will we?

      • Penny says:

And you know that how? Jeez Boa, I fall for it all the time, one minute I believe you really do care about people, next minute it seems you only care if they are on the right side of politics…..
Now before a few if you howl me down because it is perceived that I am picking on Boa, it would be really appreciated if you refrained from sending me the nasty emails that were a result of my last foray into calling out hypocrisy……..

        • Milton says:

I’m guessing that is why you pulled out of the tipping comp, Penny. I’d let Jack know if the culprit is someone from here. There’s no need for any quarrels, issues etc to go beyond this supervised site and into other areas. Not that Jack needs to waste his time baby sitting us.

          • Tracy says:

Milton, no one on the comp besides me as administrator should be able to see individual email addresses, members can message each other but only via the comp as far as I know.
If someone enters/leaves the comp the notification comes to me from them.

        • Jean Baptiste says:

I warned ya Penny. Cougars don’t change their spots.

        • Boadicea says:

Widely reported and documented from FOI research by the media.

      • Jean Baptiste says:

Equivalence? Is she up the duff?

      • smoke says:

yes we are mentioning …. as we should

    • Milton says:

      Dismayed says:
      February 6, 2018 at 8:38 pm
“Again you admit all you cons have is personal attacks. ”

      pots and kettles

    • Milton says:

and my this is a prudish, conservative side you’ve tried to hide from us. all that Victorian morality wrapped up in a thin veil of progressiveness. now get back to peeping through your curtains.

      • Jean Baptiste says:

Nothing prudish or conservative or Victorian about it. He is two faced and he let his family down.
He’s due for plenty, and he will get it. Get over it Milton.

    • Razor says:

      Bill and Chloe Shorten?

      • Dismayed says:

The next first family of the Nation. At least Chloe looks like a woman unlike the PM’s boss.

      • Penny says:

        Now that is pathetic Razor….

        • Razor says:

No it’s not Penny the circumstances are identical! Explain to me the difference?

          • Penny says:

Yes but we can’t be screaming blue murder when Barnaby’s personal life is put out there in the media, then blithely say it is OK to bring in Bill and Chloe Shorten into it. I know where you’re coming from Razor but let’s look at this fairly. You yourself said that Bill Shorten etc. had agreed not to discuss Barnaby Joyce, so why do you need to bring Bill and Chloe Shorten into it? I know why Boa wants to, but you surprise me…..you are a man who generally looks at both sides. Put simply if it is not OK to bring Barnaby’s personal life and recent circumstances into the public field, then it’s not OK to bring in Bill and Chloe Shortens. Not sure that Bill was campaigning on family values at the time, nor advocating against SSM at the time either.

        • Boadicea says:

          No, it’s fact.

          • Penny says:

Or as you said, it’s a fact of life marriages fail. However Bill Shorten’s marriage failing isn’t OK, but Barnaby’s is. Jeez Boa, make up your mind. In all my years following this blog I have never encountered such bare faced hypocrisy that you espouse.

    • Mack the Knife says:

What has his bedroom antics got to do with you, or anyone else for that matter. If he was gay or left you would defend him to the death. Dismayed = OS-1.

      • Dismayed says:

If he was gay or “left”? whatever that is and he was taking his bit on the side on taxpayer work and spewing rubbish about the sanctity of marriage blah blah I would still say he should be held accountable. I would rather he face scrutiny over the pork barrelling of over $3 billion in sugar and dairy the waste of over $4 billion in water funds this new $2-3 billion bank of Barnaby announced today and the over $5 billion NAIF.

      • Jean Baptiste says:

Try and stay sensible Mack. Or do I mean try to be sensible for a change? He’d have hardly likely got the girl pregnant if he was gay now would he?

        • Mack the Knife says:

You know what I meant JB, don’t pretend to be a thickie to defend your hare brained buddy. Now he is talking about pork barrelling, when before he was talking about porking.

    • Razor says:

Interesting to note you miserable individual you seem to be the only one making a meal of this. Shorten, Bowen, Burke and Di Natali seem to consider it his own business. Because of any doubts you may have in your own life you should not project onto others Dismal.

  • Henry Blofeld says:

Wonderful to see the International Community extending the hand of friendship to North Koreas Kim Jong un at the Winter Olympics in South Korea , Mr Insider, a hand of friendship that this 130kg tyrant does not extend to anyone else. On even bright news we see Cupboard Boy Assange has come a gutser trying to get away from his Embassy Cupboard Room. The US awaits your pleasure Julian there’s nowhere to run and the next 6 years in your pokey room will go very fast am sure. Justice awaits.

  • Bill Grieve says:

Bloody hell , Barnaby has gone and put some poor sheila up the duff , unbelievable …. at his age .

  • Boadicea says:

The tabloids are having fun but I think we’ll find parliamentarians are pretty discreet with their opinions.
After all, there are couple of big names around those parts who have done exactly the same.
And we have the Melbourne City council practically apologising if they perhaps don’t release details of the Doyle affair.
Why does the public have any right to know?

    • wraith says:

You seem to have a complete lack of morals Boa. The man is a filthy cheater. Why would anyone trust him for anything? Is it because you are single and you dont comprehend what a nasty thing a cheating man is for his family? Or is it just he is a LIberal and you would condone any filthy act done by them? Whatever, its shallow.

      • Razor says:

What would you call Bill Shorten Wraith?

      • Boadicea says:

My morals or lifestyle have nothing to do with you Wraith. But thanks for your interest.

      • Mack the Knife says:

In that vein Wraith, why would anyone trust Shorten. Chloe got pregnant when both were married to other people. So, to sum up, Bill is a filthy cheater, and so is his wife #2.

Just in case you are wondering, I know how destructive a cheater is to families, my brother was scarred for life by it. I can throw huge rocks myself, because I have never strayed into a glass house, ever.

    • Penny says:

Because they are paid by taxpayers

      • Milton says:

Most people in Canberra are funded by taxpayers, Penny as are the professors at universities, that doesn’t mean we own them and need to read the details of their private lives. Of course we have the right to free speech and this is included; eventually the backlash will be directed towards the press or journalist who feels that this type of story is ethical. Beyond that it is not very interesting gossip and sadly there are children involved who shouldn’t have to pay for the ‘sins’ of their father.

    • Bella says:

I’m just surprised the Murdoch press ran the story, but then again, have you seen the garbage the media presents as headline news?
When Julia Gillard was declared ‘barren’ by the grubs in opposition the media were all over her, endlessly digging & dissecting her personal life choices and her partners life.
Why would they suddenly choose to act differently for Joyce?

      • Dismayed says:

yes and what about the Liberal party fundraiser where they were all laughing that Ms Gillard should be stuffed in a sack and thrown into the water and alan Jones stating Ms Gillard’s father died of shame. Disgraceful hypocrisy as usual by the cons. No surprises.

      • Penny says:

        Well said Bella….and Wraith

    • The Outsider says:

      Boadicea,

Why are you touchy all of of sudden about Robert Doyle, when you had no such reservations about laying the boot into Tony Burke?

      • Boadicea says:

Not laying the boot into him. Just pointing out that Joyce is not that unique amongst parliamentarians in regard to the current furore.
I doubt if you will hear outraged criticism from Burke or Shorten on this – for obvious reasons.
