Imagine in this age of instant gratification, having to wait for something, anything for 45 years. Then think what it must be like to have to wait so long for something as fundamental as the truth.
Former Victoria Police detective, Denis Ryan, turned 86 last month.
In 1972, he was forced out of the Victoria Police Force after trying to bring the pedophile priest, Monsignor John Day, to justice.
Forty years later, Denis came to my home and together we wrote the book of that appalling story, Unholy Trinity: The Hunt for the Pedophile Priest Monsignor John Day”.
At the time I cautioned Denis about setting his expectations too high. The subject material of the book was so disturbing I doubted it would be a bestseller. To publisher Allen & Unwin’s credit they published anyway.
Full; column published here.
I saw Richard Fidlers tweet on the Fine Cotton affair and think he makes a sound point (unless others can persuade me otherwise?), and no one tells it better than Jack in his interview with the master of conversations.
Vale Hayden Haitana.
Afghanistan Cricket Board have announced they will play their first game of Test cricket against India. The BCCI will announce a venue and date shortly. A new entrant into the Test arena is long overdue. I think the last newcomer to the long form of the game was Sri Lanka, just before Bob Hawke became PM, perhaps 1983. Welcome aboard Afghanistan.
Me on the telly tonight:

Got it on record Jack
Shall be watching Mr Insider, harrowing but the story must be told. ABC TV 9.33pm by my guide here in QLD. Cheers
😀
I’ll get to a telly and make sure I watch.
Zimbabwe in 1992 and Bangladesh in 2000.
I had forgotten Zimbabwe. They’ve won 10 from 104 matches. I remembered Bangladesh just after I posted. Cricket is an official sport of China. Hong Kong have an international presence separate to mainland China. They plan to be playing Test cricket by 2020. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sport_in_China#Cricket
The Irish are also pencilled in to start playing Tests next year as well.
The Afghans should go well since they’ve got some exceptional young batsmen and bowlers who are still teenagers.
Just this week. Ireland v Afghanistan ODI

Some people get sent a strip-o-gram, some a gorilla-gram. As the Chinese writing is now on the wall would it be bad taste to send Shanghai Sam an ideogram?
Send him a Centrelink form
There was a man called Sam
For whom Dismayed was a fan
Dismal swore he was Aussie
But his dealings were dodgy
The Senator was a Labor Tai-Pan!
Thank god he’s gone Razor, but will he come back later? Cheers
Oh yes I forgot that disgraceful excuse for a human potato head Dutton. What an embarrassment he is. No Surprises.
Mr Speaker if I may! A question of relevance regarding the member for Dismal and his 5.20pm post.
There was a man named Razor,
A ruminating ungulate of a grazer,
Whose poetry sucked,
🙂
You can do better than that old bean!
Of courses,
but it’s horses,
for courses.
That comment suggests poetic justice …
Yours is worse, sorry!
Oh for God’s sakes, look up sometimes! You miss all the best ones.
Hear hear JB much better than the other efforts here. Give em heaps.
Suck, suck, snuffle snuffle……..
Thanks Dismayed. Yes mine are very good. Quite “avant garde” I think.
Mind you, credit where it’s due to Razor with his quaint efforts. You don’t see much of those pedestrian old limericks these days.
Pronanly get a $300k gig if Labor win the election running some committee like Turnbull does with his cast offs
Spot on BASSMAN. I say Sam for G. G.
Would think he’s dynamite right now.
Too hot to handle – maybe join Mensink on the never- ending world cruise. Hell, Clive might even be prepared to pay the bill – he needs some Chinese friends!
I keep thinking of Julie Bishop.
She’s taken, JB
Oh Boadicea!~ I am so sorry, I should have been more specific. What I should have said is I cant help thinking why is it that Julie isn’t getting the same attention as Sam?
http://www.afr.com/news/politics/julie-bishops-attack-on-labor-over-chinese-donations-backfires-20170614-gwqzg0
Of course I am disappointed the owner of that delightful countenance is “taken”.
Crikey!
Oh JB I do realise what you were implying – I was taking the piss – I thought you’d be right onto that – after all it’s one of your favourite pastimes. And you can be quite amusing, old thing.
Collateral Damage Sam. I’d give him a pair with Dutton.
They both need a pair.
Well, it’s time for Shanghai Sam to travel that well trodden path of failed politicians off to television land; though his timing could have been a little better. What, with the Project team already top-heavy and Team ABC already on their well deserved break for the next couple of months it looks like Sam will have to reach for the Sky. But, he’s already announced his retirement so he’s going to need every iota of his negotiating skills to score a decent dollar. Could be time to start volume 2 of his memoir
Playschool?
Looks like another “Barry Crocker” coming up for PM Turnbull in Bennelong, Mr Insider, as we read according to the latest Newspoll, the Liberal Party’s primary vote has collapsed in Bennelong a week out from a crucial by-election. Voters warming quickly now to the highly electable Kristina Keneally. Turning into the home straight Kristina on “Labor” is doing it nicely.

So it appears that John Alexander was considering pulling the pin at the next election anyway and may still do so, even if he wins. That makes him history next Saturday…
Pulling the pin may go against him Keneally can probably argue:-
1. ” I am here for the long haul JA was gonna toss it in at the next election”
2. ” You will probably have a Cabinet Minister to put your electorates case for you”
3. JA, good bloke that he is, could not score a gig in Tbull’s circus and he is better
than most of them…especially Dutts
4. The Good Bloke factor may just get him over the line. I like him!
Alas Bassie, history is littered with good blokes who had no impact in Canberra; Bruce Baird springs to mind, small l liberal, big noise in Greiner/Fahey govt, frozen out by John Howard…
………and who could blame him! Playing tennis would much more fun.
Any pollie who uses the race card during elections in this country Henry is not worth two bob.
She will be a disaster if she gets into Canberra as she was as premier.
Just a pretty face with an extremely strong personality and that is it.
The Darling of the NSW right and we ll know what they are like.
The Looters have ALWAYS used the race card what are you talking about?
