Is the Senate real? Have you touched it? Have you licked it?
Sure, there’s an edifice, a room draped in a loud, garish red decor but does the institution itself exist? Perhaps more to the point, should it?
These existential puzzles have arisen after four politicians this year – two from the Greens, one from Pauline Hanson’s One Nation and one from Family First have been sent packing. They are persona non grata. If they thought they were senators they now know they were not and their representative careers have been or will soon be stricken from the record.
Section 44 of the Constitution stipulates the following of any person wishing to take a seat in the federal parliament:
Any person who:
(i) is under any acknowledgment of allegiance, obedience, or adherence to a foreign power, or is a subject or a citizen or entitled to the rights or privileges of a subject or a citizen of a foreign power; or
(ii) is attainted of treason, or has been convicted and is under sentence, or subject to be sentenced, for any offence punishable under the law of the Commonwealth or of a State by imprisonment for one year or longer; or
(iii) is an undischarged bankrupt or insolvent; or
(iv) holds any office of profit under the Crown, or any pension payable during the pleasure of the Crown out of any of the revenues of the Commonwealth; or
(v) has any direct or indirect pecuniary interest in any agreement with the Public Service of the Commonwealth otherwise than as a member and in common with the other members of an incorporated company consisting of more than twenty-five persons;
shall be incapable of being chosen or of sitting as a senator or a member of the House of Representatives.

Certainly nothing funny about that Friday contribution, Jack.
Concerning its headline theme, if you’re criticised about your abilities point to your record and defend it if you can. It should speak for itself. Gender and race are no excuse for incompetence, nor indicators of competence.
Growing up in qld I’ve grown up with incompetence, and worse, and not a female in power!

Elon Musk that amazing genius, Mr Insider, fresh from putting in place a guaranteed Electricity Supply to our dear friends in South Australia is now pursuing another mind boggling venture and I quote: ” Elon Musk said on Twitter that he received “verbal government approval” to build an underground Hyperloop transit network connecting New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington DC, with stops connecting each city center, and a dozen more entry or exit elevators located within each city. The project would be run through The Boring Company, Musk’s tunneling venture, which has already begun test digging near SpaceX HQ in California.” Nothing can stop this fertile mind from achieving anything methinks. The World needs more “Elon Musks” imho!

JTI strong article this afternoon. Great work.
Bella, have you seen the reports the turnbull coalition are looking at reducing Marine Parks by 80%, more than abbott was even looking at doing. this coalition is a Disgrace. Analysis shows NO economic benefits for the fisheries.
What i’ve heard is pretty distressing Dismayed but I’m not surprised this government have chosen to ignore the science. It’s their MO.
Protection of our current marine parks is vital now, but disgracefully, once again, the Libnats deliberate ignorance and greed will take Australia backwards.
Any concrete source Dismal or is it somebody distributing fake news.
I cannot believe that they would be so stupid.

It looks as though they are that stupid.
This is like allowing logging in a National Park.

JULY 21, 2017 AT 12:30 PM…..is that all you and the Liberals can come up with.. WE STOPPED THE BOATS?
Is that all you have in your armoury? Your whole raison d’être? The boats did not destroy the economy like Liberal policies have.
Your Looters certainly did not STOP THE PLANES…65,000 ILLEGALS are here but Dutts won’t chase them…why? The old ladies aren’t scared of them. No votes in it! And they are costing us a fortune using false Medicare and C.Link documentation to claim pensions etc.
Is the whole of our universe and economic survival determined by WE STOPPED THE BOATS? Is this the only card you have in the pack? Why do you fall back on that worn out jingoism in the face of the economic disaster debt, deficit and unemployment the Looters have led us into. We STOPPED THE BOATS….Groan! Do you think you will win the next election with
This toxic (carbon) tax (the economy GREW during this period)
Stop the boats (Turnbacks stopped the boats NOT cages and torture)
End the debt (Deficit tripled)/Household debt the highest ever.
Fooled once…never again!
Oh, they can come up with a whole lot more Bassman but the Achilles heel of Labor is border protection.
Your reaction is indicative of the Labor sensitivity on the issue.
I am willing to bet that a week after they win the next election, there will be a virtual armada heading our way. Those who make millions out of the trade are extremely astute and know that the Labor party, mainly on the Left but not completely, are determined to remove all the impediments that have stopped their “trade” dead in its tracks for the last 5 years.
They also know that there are many in the Liberal Party who disagree with the methods also.
It is just another schism between the “ruling ” classes ( Labor included) and the rest of us poor sods who have to pay the bills.
Stop The Boats! Sigh!
You were fooled Bassy? When?
Voters fooled once on debt, deficit, carbon tax 2013…never again…they won’t fall for stupid things like a leg of lamb $100 again Bald.
Yes they will
^^ this ‘ere wot teeeve sed….voters t’ick as muk
The mob?
Actually Bassy, listening to that strange interview Fran Kelly had with Rudd the other day, I believe it was Rudd who was crowing about his achievements in that regard. He seemed very keen to take the credit for stopping the boats. Really weird
a long bow, but needs to be put to bed

That empirical. Roberts must walk.
he won’t walk tho’…..which begs……whose the enforcement/?
Why would he walk before the issue is clarified? I’m sure he will ”walk” if it turns out he is a dual citizen.
nasty stutter
Working my way through ‘Finest Hour’, Jack, day by day, now into May 20 1940. Can’t help feeling the situation may be brewing up to something really dramatic. Gilbert has done a fine job of laying out the workings of Churchill’s remarkable mind. The many other “characters” get their due, too, and the author manages to keep the reader “on the page” as it were, with all the many offices, functions, committees, etc. Did England eventually get those Curtiss P40s from FDR? Can’t wait to find out.
The other side was a finely tuned machine, too, at that stage. I wonder if anyone has catalogued their progress in such a finely grained and readable manner.
So the Chief of Police over there says the fatal shooting of that woman ”should not have happened”.
Jesus – what an understatement.
A very unimpressive Press Conference from her Boadicea, and she claims she had been hiking hence why we haven’t heard from her for days! Time for a new Police Chief methinks.
why?? Seriously….a different talking head?
