In Australia, The New York Times of our lives

I have been perusing the pages of The New York Times so you don’t have to.

With great sound and fury, the NYT recently opened up an office in this Wide Brown Land and the results have been odd, to say the least.

It’s hard to know who the Australian articles are written for. Are they for Americans to glean a greater understanding of a land so far away they couldn’t care less about it, or are they written for the meagre number of Australian subscribers who signed up during the US presidential election, only to forget to unsubscribe after all the votes were counted?

Either way, the Times fails miserably.

Full column here.

Being a huge fan of all things American, Mr Insider, as you would realise, and having a lot of memorabilia in my home office from the USA from many trips , its the little things that sometimes touch one as here with Custer’s 7th Cavalry March Song called “Gary Owen”. One can see in the minds eye the men on their horses marching along to this for sure. I believe it was also played in Vietnam with the Hal Moore’s 1st Cavalry (Airmobile) around 1965 onwards.

Whilst I do not support or endorse in any way her many very poor comments I am sad to see her leave. A true democracy can only function when there are dissenting voices. Voices which can be heard without fear of violence or retribution from government. Hope she goes well in the UK.

    • Trivalve says:

Maybe we can be relieved of The Australian’s obsession with her for a while. But probably not.

      • Lou oTOD says:

I’m already relieved of her obsession with herself TV. I hope her return flight is an open ended ticket, with a cash out option. She is a really good case for dual citizenship.

        • Trivalve says:

          So stop the oxygen!

        • John O'Hagan says:

Yes, it’s reassuring to know that inconvenient persons can still be hounded out of the country by media plutocrats, and the natural order restored.

          • Jean Baptiste says:

Well said John. Free speech sometimes isn’t all that free is it?

          • Bella says:

            Too true JOH i’m afraid.
            Shabby stuff.

          • Razor says:

            JOH and Bella,
How has she been hounded out?

          • Milton says:

“hounded out” John? What a load of balls. What’s the bet she’ll be back when she is ignored out of London. And why London? Why not a non secular place?

            • Jack The Insider says:

Have to say the Ch.7 poll was nasty click bait, aiming at getting outrageous and deeply unpleasant comments. I don’t have a lot of time for YAM, think she’s little more than a rabid self promoter but Ch.7 website poll was a shocker. Withdrawn now and apologies made. We are better than this.

  • Razor says:

It would appear we have been lead to the altar of Green fanaticism on the basis of dodgy computer models. The authors of this peer reviewed report could hardly be described as deniers!

    http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/health-science/climate-models-overestimated-temperature-rises-scientists/news-story/3df40de24758698cba22d98743d4e4c5

    • Dismayed says:

“None of our findings call into question the reality of long-term warming of Earth’s troposphere and surface, or cast doubt on prevailing estimates of the amount of warming we can expect from future increases in GHG concentrations,” the authors said

    • Dismayed says:

I posted this one last week. ” The 2014 review of the RET, with modelling done by ACIL Allen, found that removing the RET would increase electricity prices. In fact, the only outcome modelled that didn’t lead to increased electricity bills was an expansion of the RET scheme.” This was Abbotts commissioned review.
You really should stop dismissing information that does not fit your fixed false beliefs. Coal is No longer the cheapest option plus it Does pollute heavily. The Adani scam, taxpayer subsidised at $300,000 per job is not viable neither are taxpayer subsidised coal fired generation plants. Do not post the ridiculous article from the Australian the other day either. The farmers in the 5th year of drought are questioning why it has been given unlimited access to water. If you actually did care about the people up there start supporting Innovative Agile technologies ( remember that one? ) which are the jobs of the future. As much as you want the world you thought it was as a child it is not the best option for generations now or in the future.

    • Jean Baptiste says:

What has the temperature of the troposphere got to do with anything? It astounds me how a pathetic article like that, completely ignoring the stupendous amount of heat being sequestered in the oceans, and the terrifying melt of the Antarctic and Greenland ice masses an can apparently give hope to the climate change denying idiots.

      This is mass madness.

    • JackSprat says:

Their models have been sus for years Razor.
I do not think it has been deliberate.
I think it is very arrogant of them that they think they can model something as complex like climate over a 20 year period given that the climate probably has thousands of variables.

  • Razor says:

Massive electricity price rises released over the weekend. It did not have to be like this but when power stations are shut due to ideology what do you expect. We have the ability to generate the cheapest energy in the Western World and create masses of employment opportunities, through either coal or nuclear power, but we choose to play with the fairies at the bottom of the garden. Just insane!

    • Jack The Insider says:

The real problem is the absence of a national energy policy. The carbon tax has been axed and replaced with nothing that can provide any certainty for investors. We have a renewable energy target of 23 per cent and the Direct Action plan, which pays polluters to reduce emissions. These are clumsy mechanisms both for reducing emissions and in providing certainty for investors. Abbott can babble about coal all he likes but what we have is what he put in place and it is adding to wholesale electricity prices and not reducing emissions. Policy fail.

      • Trivalve says:

Agree. And for mine, it all started with privatisation of utilities. Thank God they didn’t manage to sell Snowy Hydro. “Nah, not turning it on tonight. Not enough in it”.

      • Razor says:

A policy fail without doubt. So get rid of any RET and subsidies for renewables and off we go!

      • JackSprat says:

Not too sure it is simple as that Jack but it is definitely an angle being peddled by quite a few people.
I thought one of the main problems is the large subsidies to the renewal crowd, giving them supply preference over the coal fired stations and consequently making the latter unprofitable.
Nobody in their right minds would invest in any coal fired power station in this country. This could be extended to any investment other than agriculture which they are doing at a rapid rate.
I always thought power generation was a state issue – they are certainly the ones who are leading the charge in closing down the cheap and reliable power sources..
What I do know is that if the situation keeps going, we will have no trouble meeting any emissions standards because everything from food processing to what little we have left of manufacturing will disappear overseas. All these industries have to compete with products from overseas with absolutely no protection.
A minority in this country is driving the rest of us into a very uncertain future and, without correction, probable penury.

      • BASSMAN says:

No one will invest in coal…it is a 40yr wait for a return on your investment.
Direct Action was the REAL carbon tax not Gillard’s because it was subsidised by the taxpayers. Abbott paid the polluters to pollute…Liberal MADNESS!!

    • Dismayed says:

you are the one off with the fairies. Your socialist dream of government run energy may be funded by the taxpayers of Australia but it will not last as technology and the market invest away from your oxymoronic “clean coal” ideology. Over half of energy prices are from upgrades to poles and wires to ensure the regulated profits keep increasing. You continue to refuse to accept facts and live in the same fantasy space as Malcom Roberts. No surprises. The power increases are a direct result of the policies or lack that you continue to support. Take a look in the mirror and blame who you see.

    • Bella says:

Take that back Razor. My fairies are far from insane!
This dodgy government clearly takes the cake in that category. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-05-08/experts-issue-power-price-warning-emissions-intensity-scheme/8499656

  • Bethann says:

Thank you for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbor were just preparing to do some research on this. We got a grab a book from our local library but I think I learned more clear from this post. I am very glad to see such magnificent information being shared freely out there.

  • Wissendorf says:

Horn’s win is provoking a lot of negative sentiment here. NYT and WaPo both ran an item from AP in the morning editions. Claims of a fix. As 3 of the four officials were American, I don’t know how Horn’s camp could have rigged it. I thought he won fair and square. Pacquiao came out in the 12th looking for a knockout. His corner must have told him he was behind on points, or he worked it out for himself. At the end of the fight he didn’t act like a bloke who had just won a major bout. Well done Hornet. Great fight.

I won a small pot on Horn but had a dismal weekend of tipping. Next week.

Jack you might like this excerpt from a speech by Michael Goodwin at the Post: http://nypost.com/2017/07/01/why-the-media-has-broken-down-in-the-age-of-trump/

There’s a great anecdote about the legendary Abe Rosenthal.
I used to have the NYTimes delivered to my office door five days a week while at the U of Wisconsin. Now I don’t generally bother reading it at all. Sad to say they left me, I haven’t moved _that_ far politically except as one does with age and experience.

    • Jean Baptiste says:

Jeez, working all the angles. Desperate much.
The POTUS is still a narcissistic moron.

      • JackSprat says:

Not surprised that you did not like the article JB.
Too far out of your current thought bubble.
Moron – do not think so.
The NYT is their equivalent of Fairfax – full of reporters who just want to spout their views of the world minus all the fact.
I wonder if Gina will have a go at taking over Fairfax – it would be pocket money for her.

  • Dwight says:

Back on topic, a Times factoid: The New York Times has not endorsed a Republican for president since Dwight Eisenhower in 1956.

    • Henry Blofeld says:

But look at the source, Mr Baptiste, one of the leading “fake news” purveyors. Having said that I saw the TV chat and was simply a bit of chit chat as POTUS Trump signed a new piece of legislation. A “B” for Bollocks on this one for you dear friend. Cheers

      • Dismayed says:

HB you continue to show all that is wrong with your brand. If someone puts up information, data, research even an opinion that you don’t like or that does not reinforce your fixed false beliefs you claim it is fake. You and your cons have regressed the human condition. This is just one of the reasons your Dictator trump is one of the most dangerous divisive people on the planet. sheep like you actually believe his toxic rubbish. You are and embarrassment to Australia.

        • Lou oTOD says:

          Gary

Now now, don’t you realise you’ve just described yourself. I’d hardly call it a brand, but you are clearly scarred. What else have you got time to do than be an obnoxious twit on both sides of the wall?

Congratulations by the way to South Australia, having just cracked the most expensive power costs in the world last weekend, surpassing Denmark at last. Bask in the 140% return on collections from GST while you can, the rest of Australia wants its money back.

          • Dismayed says:

HAHAHAHA Milton I think it was called me Gary a couple of years ago. I think you have been watching too many chocolate Milk commercials. Do they still make Gary chocolate milk? Not sure who this Gary is I have not been into the comments on the other side for some time. Too many freaks. Don’t tell me someone that disagrees actually gets published over there. You may recall several months ago I was abused here for daring to suggest dissenting views don’t get published over there. Why would I go and comment where I don’t get published? You actually don’t believe that there are more than a handful people that don’t swallow your conservative bullshit. HAHAHA I must look this Gary up. He sounds a lot smarter than many here.

          • Boadicea says:

Methinks he doth protest too much…..

      • Jean Baptiste says:

What! The fake news purveyors have a double impersonating an idiotic Donald Trump in fake video interviews?
That’s some sophisticated fake news Henry.

        “Trump Denies He Was Trump!”

        Give ’em heaps Henry.

  • Jean Baptiste says:

    Mr Henry Blofeld Esq.

Buzz looks like he is busting for a leak! “We started, but we didn’t finish………. ” What exactly is the finish of space exploration Henry? This unusual POTUS is as nutty as fruit cake.
“At some point in the future , we are going to look back and say how did we do it without space.”
Probably not well, firing rockets off without space would have it’s limitations.
He’s figured out the basic physics anyway?

    • Henry Blofeld says:

Bless you dear Mr Baptiste, still wandering around in the “wilderness of space” I note whilst POTUS Trump and his good friend the 2nd man to walk on the Moon, Buzz Aldrin get on with conquering new “horizons”. Meanwhile dear friend I draw your attention to this coming weeks meeting of two old friends in POTUS Trump and POTRF Putin. Wow that will be something to see for sure and methinks an invite will be issued to Putin to come walk with Trump on the lawns of the White House. Rumours swirl too that Trump may do a “‘pop in” on Theresa over at No10. Strewth. Cheers

      • Jean Baptiste says:

I fear a serious international incident is inevitable Henry. Via the artifices of a bug placement in the Oval Office (no guessing who planted the bug, codename “Ladybird”) Vlad is aware that Trump intends to jerk him off, his feet to make a statement with his bizarre dominant handshake.
Vlad, a black belted exponent of the art of Judo plans to go with the momentum, then prop and deploy a classic nage-waza movement culminating in body slamming the POTUS into the floor treatments.
The Russians will claim The Donald is at fault and Putin naturally endowed with the strength of a Murmansk musk ox was merely trying to arrest his headlong flight but was unable to break Trump’s fear crazed grip.
No doubt Trump will quickly regain his composure if not his breath and give the world a master class in the “Art of The Deal.” One hopes so, it would be most unfortunate for his image to spend an extended period gasping on his back with his four limbs waving in the air.
A contact in the Pyongyang press informs me optimistically they are locked and loaded with the phrase “Capitalist Cockroach gets Pest Treatment.”

Best wishes cobber. Let the good times roll.
