Humble servant of the Nation

Taking a leaf out of the extremist handbook

This week the question has been firmly put. Should there be more Nazis on television or less, or for the grammar pedants out there, fuhrer?

All right. That’s a really bad joke. The point is that so many people including journalists have got this horribly wrong.

Cotterill needs to be confronted, subjected to scrutiny and forensically cross-examined.

What to call him then? The media has cobbled together several terms, all of them fairly unhelpful, including activist, patriot and ultra-right wing extremist. On Channel 7 he was described as one member of a group who were planning to put “a neighbourhood watch group together”.

Let’s start with what he is. Mr Cottrell is a violent criminal, having been convicted of arson, stalking, aggravated burglary, trafficking in steroids and breaching interventions orders. He added racial vilification to his rap sheet earlier this year.

Bird watchers may be interested to know the night parrot controversy has hit the headlines again. Naturalists, distinguished ANU academics, sundry Australian Wildlife Conservatory members and ecologists are said to be ruffling each others feathers in a new book soon to be released, titled ……… you guessed it, “Night Parrots”.

    Can’t wait.

    Bella:
The “dear kunanyi” exhibition was great. Many beautiful pictures of our mountain and a big crowd at the opening. I succumbed and bought one! Bob was not there but I went along to Fullers Bookshop this week to hear him talk at the launch of the book Refining the definition of Wilderness. Quote from the night was “Under this gung-ho government the Tasmanian wilderness is facing death by 1,000 cuts.” Yep, sad.
Looking forward to attending the launch of the book Adani and the War against Coal. Bob will be in conversation with the author, Quentin Beresford. They expect such a large attendance that it will be held at the town hall – couple of weeks time. I have my ticket !
The cable car war lurches from one debacle to the next. The HCC Parks councillors declined to grant them a permit to do a flora and fauna assessment for their new proposed base camp area after Cascade Brewery decided not to lease them any of their land. Their new plan involves cutting a 2.7km road through rare silver peppermint eucalypts. The MWCC are furious. Claiming bias, kangaroo courts blah blah, blah.
    Wazzocks!

Thanks Boa & it seems like Bob’s quote is right.
I’d not heard about the new book but I would love to be at that launch listening to two passionate environmentalists. Lucky you. 💚

Thank-you Boa. I replied to you before but it seems it’s disappeared.

I’ll just have a leisurely meander then, see if it works.

    Crikey, will Turkey join Brics?

    • Dwight says:

Don’t think the BRICs need another failing economy. They’re full up.

So Dwight, resident financial expert, if BRICS gets it poo into one big heap and dumps the buck would that be advantageous or disadvantageous to the USA? vis-à-vis the mortgage.

        • Dwight says:

I don’t foresee the replacement of the USD as the reserve currency, JB. It could happen, but the stability of the dollar makes it a safe haven. Also, almost all purchases of petroleum are denominated in dollars. Which, of course, increases its value as a reserve.

The Russian economy is being strangled by Putin and his cronies controlling ever more parts of it. The Chinese need 7% growth to keep the people from turning on the Communists, and Xi also taking more control. They’re growth is declining and there is a bad debt crisis looming. The Indians are the bright spot with more than 8% growth, which they’re getting for getting out of the way of business. But there’s a long tail of extremely poor people with millions without access to electricity. Brazil is sputtering along at about 2%, but the new government might be able to turn things around–a bit.

    • Henry Donald J Blofeld says:

“Brics” who Mr. Baptiste, do you mean “Brits”. Cheers

      • Jean Baptiste says:

No. Go and play with your G.I. Joe toys.

      • Penny says:

BRICS my dear Henry is an acronym for five emerging economies Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Bit like locus of control, phrases not so well known or used outside business economics and leadership courses…

    • Henry Donald J Blofeld says:

Apologies, Mr. Baptiste, as you were with BRICS. As the old saying goes “off goes your head on goes a pumpkin. Cheers

My first comment for a month, as I have been busy moving house. While I have been working in the electorate of Mayo for some time, we have just relocated. Too late to get a vote in the recent by-election, however. I thought the Liberals ran a very poor campaign. And linking to the current topic, the father of the unsuccessful Liberal candidate for Mayo was one of those who enjoyed a consultancy with Woodside, the company that stood to gain so much from the espionage.

What I would like to know is this. What made an Australian government of any political persuasion think that it would be a good idea for Australia to be compared with Turkmenistan, Equatorial Guinea or, indeed, Mother Russia herself? For those are the sort of countries in which you will be prosecuted and probably jailed for embarrassing a government. Alright, in Equatorial Guinea you will probably just disappear. And that is what this is about. It may be almost impossible to shame a government, but this episode has done so. This is why Collaery and witness K must be punished. There are no national security interests here. It is not the way that the government of an advanced democracy behaves. But then, perhaps we are no longer an advanced democracy.

    • Jean Baptiste says:

No national security interests! Bu, but, what about the security of the shareholders?

And the disillusionment of the children, especially the grown up ones! It was all so lovely, and we are all so lovely and these spoilsports come along and tell us about ourselves. It’s cruel that’s what it is.
