SSM survey takes the cake

There are lots of problems with the forthcoming same sex marriage postal survey but the biggest one is voters are essentially voting blind in the absence of a bill.

Why do we not have a bill? You’d have to ask the Turnbull government. If you ask me, I’d say the Turnbull government doesn’t have the backbone to put one up and give some useful form of definition to what we will soon be checking the boxes of in the coming weeks. But that’s just me.

Right now we have a fierce debate going on about something we do not know and cannot possibly divine and this, of course, has led to a lot of talk about nothing.

The rather tedious example being shuffled about and one mirrored in the United States is the one associated with wedding cake bakers (they call themselves designers now but I’m not falling for that one) and whether some of them have the right to withdraw their services to same sex couples who are preparing to tie the knot.

So Paul Kelly thinks that if same sex marriage is passed religion will be driven from the public square. Apart from the fact that the statement is fatuous nonsense, I have no problem with religion being driven out, no more militant islam, no ultra-orthodox Judaism, no fundamentalist christians, no scientology, etc etc.

As far as I am concerned you can believe whatever you want, as long as you keep it to yourself. Just because you have caught something nasty why do you have to spread it around?

  • Fun Gus Crutch says:

Following the postie now on the bike, he puts the letters in, I takes the letters out. Everyone is voting NO!

  • Boadicea says:

Well, SA is going to be an interesting place to watch this Summer. Is the Elon Musk thing going to work – or not? The $64,000 question…..

    • Dismayed says:

I see YvonneTas on the other side making disparaging remarks about the great SA JAY and his progressive world leading efforts to ensure the state he Leads has reliable power. Oh and on Nuclear. It wont happen and even if we start building now it will take another 20 years before it produces. We have cheaper reliable new technology now. The coalition and its supporters are responsible for the failing energy market in Australia. The latest hysterical lies being parroted by the conservative in this country prove again that coalition government and their supporters waste Decades of the nations progress.

    • Henry Blofeld says:

Elon’s Battery Storage “may’ be the only saving grace for SA, Boadicea. It works and has been tried successfully in California by Musk. Cheers hope your French holiday going beautifully.

      • Boadicea says:

Wonderful here HB. I am so happy when in France that I think I must have been French in another life
Hope I come back as such in the next life!!

    • Razor says:

The much vaunted battery supplies about 1 minute of base load power anyway Boa.

      • Dismayed says:

The battery is NOT designed to supply “base load” power it is to come online to minimise disruption and frequency spikes until the Gas peaking units kick in. Again you comment on things you don’t actually understand.

        • JackSprat says:

Geez Dismal you have come a long way in the last few months.
You have finally figured out what the batteries are supposed to do.
Only trouble is that you need them on more than one wind farm.

    • Dwight says:

      More like the $100,000,000+ question.
What could go wrong? Diesel generators and the world’s biggest Duracell.

Wanna cause Green heads to spin? Ask them if Musk is using ethically sourced cobalt for his batteries. Half the world supply comes from the Congo.

      • Dismayed says:

Dwight. You were shown on the other side yesterday your continued “cobalt” story is not correct.

      • Boadicea says:

What is of concern to me Dwight as electricity prices rise to subsidise all this, the people who cannot afford renovations to their power – the elderly in particular, are going without heat or cooling because they just cannot pay the bill.

  • Boadicea says:

Disturbing to read that ISIS may relocate to the Philippines as tjey get hounded out of the ME. Bit close to home.

    • Razor says:

Watch the Southern Phillipines very closely Boa……..Our chief ASIS man wasn’t photographed standing beside their president recently for nothin!

    • Dismayed says:

The same lies repeated are NOT new policy.

    • Henry Blofeld says:

Razor amazingly I do see it as Turnbull scrambles around like the dud he is totally captive to the right and left of his so called “government”. Energy the big issue in Australia and the People are watching. Cheers

    • Milton says:

SSM getting knocked on the head will be the end of Turnbull, Razor. The straw that broke the camels back, so to speak.
Once the results of the postal vote favour no, Shorten will declare if elected he will attempt to pass ssm through parliament, ensuring the return of Abbott – the people’s champion.

      • Dismayed says:

Shorten stated months ago he would have a vote in parliament within his first 100 days. abbott will not save any furniture. He will only ensure the split JTI wrote about some time ago. The cons regressive needs and hysterical misinformation are not helping the Liberal party in this country.

      • Boadicea says:

Stranger things have happened, Milton. You could be right

  • Henry Blofeld says:

A very short clip on the then young Donald Trump circa 1980, Mr Insider. Anyone who thinks he wont be POTUS for 4 or 8 years has rocks in their head imho. Confidence plus backed by ability equals success!

    • Dwight says:

When the President was a lad he attended the church of the Reverend Norman Vincent Peale.

      • Henry Blofeld says:

That he did indeed Dwight, Trump married his 1st wife Ivana in Peale’s Church. Trump an amazing man and at age 71yo shows no sign of slowing down in any way. Cheers.

  • JackSprat says:

Does anybody now how the NSW Council election results are calculated.
It is like the Senate but unlike the Senate one only had to put a “1” above the line and below the line one had to number 1 less than the number of Councillors to be elected boxes. In most cases only 2 boxes.
If everybody followed that principal there are no flow on preferences from group to group to be allocated when going through the elimination process which starts with the person with the lowest quota being eliminated and so forth until a quota is reached.
I cannot find any information anywhere.

  • Tracy says:

LoT 9.25, you would have to change the bonus point settings to take it off.
I tend to leave it for Champions League a full house should be rewarded.

    • Lou oTOD says:

      Tracy, and Bo,

I’m having difficulty getting a post through from Spain. I’ll try again.

I have no problem with the tipping rules, just surprised the concept of a bonus point for a full round carries through to finals. Doesn’t matter in the scheme of things.

We are in Barcelona, and having dinner in the Placa last night were interrupted by a stream of police on motor bikes and in cars rolling in with lights flashing. It turns out there was a suspicious vehicle down at Sagrada Familia cathedral, which was ventually found to be a false alarm.

I must say we are happy to be heading to Portugal tomorrow.

    • Gryzly says:

Bonus point is turned off. and always has been. Who got one?

      • Boadicea says:

I got a full house Gryzly but didn’t notice getting a bonus point! I think Lou thinks I did. Not sure……

      • Lou oTOD says:

        Hi Gryzly, Bo and others,

I’m on the road travelling, but every time I log in to the footy tipping it shows Bo with a “five” for last week, I.e. Includes a bonus point.

Last time I checked it was removed, but is now back with Bo leading by one. It seems there is system fault.

On travel, now in Lisbon. Wow it has turned into a foodie paradise, great place.

  • Henry Blofeld says:

Reportedly a scorching hot Summer coming up Mr Insider. Saw reports in the Media that South Australia and Victoria may face Power blackouts. The shutting down early of Coal Fired Power Stations a blunder of mega proportions. Turnbull running round now trying to get Liddell to stay open but AGL may have to make a financial decision foisted on them by the mad Greens and other raving nutters who have stuffed the Electricity supply to Australia. We should not be in the position we are in as we have abundant Coal and Gas Reserves to draw on.

    • CoHD says:

Considering the hot summer and the blog topic here is a gay rights band from the 70’s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHddrxIS3QY for you nossy

    • JackSprat says:

The fiasco surrounding power in this country is a “tribute” to the political process and those who run it in this country at the State and Federal levels on all sides of politics..
Individually none of them could organize a chook raffle at a country pub – collectively they would have trouble even recognizing that a chook raffle was needed, how many tickets would be required and how much.
Some would object to the raffle on the basis of “be kind to chooks”
Others would object on the basis that only unionized chook sellers should be used.
Others would object because by using chooks as the raffle, vegans were discriminated against.
Others would be boycott the pub because the beneficiaries of the raffle did not spread across the whole community.
The Government would stop it because it was not a registered raffle.
Meanwhile the local footy club could not afford to buy balls for the kids.
