Humble servant of the Nation

A humble human guinea pig on Keytruda trial

Last night I went to bed early with a raging sore throat and a runny nose. If anything, those symptoms are a touch worse today. I’m not complaining. I’m actually very pleased.

Those little signs indicate my immune system is kicking in and it was kickstarted when I received my first dose of Keytruda (Pembrolizumab) yesterday afternoon at Westmead Hospital.

Keytruda is one of a limited range of new immuno-oncological drugs designed to firstly tear down the protective mechanisms that cancer cells develop and then supercharge the immune system to the point where the body itself can destroy cancer at a cellular level.

I’ve joked with friends that I might be soon seen in public wearing a cape and that I have already developed the superhuman powers of night hearing and communicating with cats.

During his election campaign Trump was adamant he would pull all American troops out of the Middle East. Out of everywhere. Must have been a “non-core” promise.
Making America great again is becoming very confusing.

As a Military History buff, Mr Insider, a short clip here of the late great British Fighter Ace, Douglas Badar, on their “This Is Your Life” in 1982. You will also see the German Ace Adolf Galland make an appearance near the end as he and Douglas became friends. Sadly Douglas died the same year of a heart attack aged 72yo. He spent many years after the war working for SHELL in charge of their Aviation Division which gave him a chance to fly all over the World, mainly in single engine aircraft.

Moving on from the statue-toppling American Taliban (insert Red Guards if that’s your preferred meme) we now have an academic at Brooklyn Law (motto: If you’re breathing, we’ll enrol you.) who sees something racist about today’s eclipse:

    • Jack The Insider says:

That would be funny if it wasn’t so appallingly true.

    • Lou oTOD says:

Holy crap Dwight, that had to be the longest piece of intellectual wank I have ever read.

There is something perverse about tying a total eclipse with the persecution of black America. I didn’t know the sun and moon had such a moral compass. A bad moon arising.

By the bye, it is funny how certain commentators in the ol USA point a finger at Australia for being full of racist bigots. Such a thing doesn’t exist in the home of the free does it? We are buggered by the way, we don’t get left in the dark by the cosmos until 2028, so we will have to stay in bright sunlight. Stay out too long and you’ll be quite dark.

That’s not what the article says at all.

      • John O'Hagan says:

But that is what the right-wing internet pile-on _says_ it says, which I guess is all that matters these days. *sigh*

  • Boadicea says:

Why won’t Bill release proof of his citizenship? If everything is hunky dory as he claims it to be, what’s he got to lose by doing so? One would think he would be keen to, given his eagerness to be PM. And then we can all rest assured of his dinky di’ness.

    • Jack The Insider says:

This is where this all gets very silly. Talk of an audit and show us your proof of sole citizenship is a delaying tactic. Labor and the Libs for the most part have very sound vetting processes for candidates. It is the minors that don’t, clearly. These are not new laws or laws that are newly interpreted. The High Court is most unlikely to make some blue sky finding here. It is black letter law.

      • Boadicea says:

What a shambles. But it’s not going to go away – someone will be digging away at it. That’s for sure.
Given the scorn he has poured over the culprits, I hope he has renounced his British citizenship – otherwise he will look very silly.

      • jack says:

I had a bit of a look at a couple of cases and while my con law is rusty, to say the least, i think there is at least some chance the High Court will read down s44 to exclude citizenships granted by descent where they are not known to the MP and where no steps have been taken to obtain or formalise the grant of citizenship.

that is to treat them in the same way as the situation where an MP has the right to obtain citizenship, say because of an irish grandmother, but takes no action to exercise the right.

        no guarantees but some chance.

Hear what you say about the vetting of the big parties but i suspect that there have been a lot of these down the years but no-one has cared and no-one has checked.

i think our third PM may have been born in Chile.

        • Jack The Insider says:

I imagine there might be a few around today drawing a parliamentary pension. I hear what you’re saying but if Zi was Joyce or Nash I would not by signing any contracts as minister.

    • Tracy says:

I’m sure that vol II of K Rudds Churchillian size memoirs will have content that will make Bill squirm in his seat.
Kevin’s not one to forget a grudge, so while Bill’s not under scrutiny at the moment I’m sure his time will come probably as campaigning gets underway for the next election, Kevin loves to pick the right moment.
Having said that Bill does seem possessed of a poor mememory for one so keen on the top job, the next ex-PM/PM photo will be a rip snorter, especially with Rudd, Gillard, Shorten.

  • Milton says:

On Q&A (ok I couldn’t help meself) Shorten was all coy about providing proof that he renounced his British citizenship. Some people wont leave that alone until he does. Beyond that he had nothing else to offer after offering nothing. He is a dud, duffer and offers nothing.

    • BASSMAN says:

Well did you just discover that Milt! Your Gestalt moment. I have been saying that for years.Evercsince he rigged his leadership.

      • Milton says:

No Bassy, it has not been hidden from my mind. Which only makes Turnbull’s situation all the worser!

      • Mack the Knife says:

Sad state of affairs when he is the alternate PM. Thought he would have produced the docs or answered Tony Jones’ questions to make himself look beyond reproach. Just not possible with him, not in his dna.

    • Trivalve says:

How long did it take Abbott to cough his up?

  • Trabvitch says:

An interesting conversation in an interesting place today.

I was with one colleague and another mate in the CTA Club in Martin Place today. To those who don’t know the CTA Club it is a piece of 70’s nostalgia below the mushroom in Martin Place. Carpeted walls, but cheap beer and good steaks.
All three of us have different sporting allegiances – Cats/Bulldogs/Ford, Roos/Dragons/Holden and Swans/Roosters/doesnt follow cars. As for Union, TahTahs/Brumbies/TahTahs.

We got onto sport, as guys will. The main topics of conversation regarded the AFL. Buddy’s goal this weekend, the NMFC’s dropping of Harvey (which was roundly condemned) and the lack of tatts (unless you like Collingwood, and then I suppose Franklin comes in, but he is forgiven given his talent). The NRL discussion was negative – the Canberra dropouts, all with a coloured canvas – Ferguson, Carney and who is that hopeless piece of tattooed work that plays for the Dragons? My father would turn in his grave. Oh sorry, Dugan.

Then the discussion was, why do kids go to AFL? You do not need to be a big bugger to do well! The size of players in the Rugby codes just precludes a lot of the possible players.

Anyway, the punchline was – ten years ago three Sydneysiders chatting about AFL would have been anathema, it would have all been about league… Times have changed.

Jack, good win for the Blues, and best of luck with the treatment. Thanks for opening up about what is happening with you.

    Cheers, The Russian limo.

    • Jack The Insider says:

Onya Trabvitch. The short answer re Australian rules is it is the dominant code in this country and the AFL has been prepared to spend money intelligently to develop the game in places it had little or no reach 20 years ago. In my area — the Illawarra — there are 15 AFL development officers. There are four from the NRL. The ARU just got rid of their sole development officer in the region. It’s not a fluke AFL dominates.

      • Razor says:

Same here in Qld. The AFL have brained it amongst kids and more importantly their mothers. There’s a racial aspect at play as well. No mother likes to see her 13yr old knocked arse over by a 120kg Pacific Islander kid. The Aussie Rules, due to the fast moving pace of the game, doesn’t attract that type of body shape.

  • BASSMAN says:

This was SO OBVIOUSLY set up during rehearsals, so FAKE!!

All these show X factor, Australia Has Talent (?) talent shows are BS. This is so
obvious a kid could work it out. But…I guess that is ‘show business”/entertainment.
The other thing about these shows is instead of just having the songs they pan it out for an hour with heaps of ads and a history of each contestant from maternity ward to ‘the’ BIG night!

    • Milton says:

Can’t stand those muso shows, B’man. For mine cringe worthy, but a lot of varying shows have the annoying tendency of dragging things out. It’s a pain in the arse which I try to avoid. Some shows I reckon are worth about 13 mins stretched to an hour. A bit like question time!

What the hell happening with the USN? USS John S. McCain in collision with merchant ship
    http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/uss-john-s-mccain-in-collision-with-merchant-ship/news-story/d25f5be422533e05bc0fa80cdca9830e

Back in June it was the USS Fitzgerald. A Burke-class destroyer has the most sophisticated command and control electronics known to man. Aren’t they turning the damn thing on?

Perhaps this is a reflection of the ship’s namesake regaining his maverick status with the press. My bet is on the sequestration, sadly.
