Here I was all set to knock out a Christmas column full of cheer and bonhomie but life, or more accurately, Daily Life has intervened.
I normally disapprove of intra-media byplays but Fairfax Media’s Daily Life section has become so full of cranky third wave feminism that someone needs to hold it up to the light. Among this waste of ink and kilobyte street corner psychobabble, comes a contribution from self described feminist Polly Dunning who tells her harrowing tale of giving birth to a shame boy. The good news is she’s slowly getting over it.
I’m not allowed to swear anymore, at least not at volume but this is sorely testing my already fragile grip on self-control.
At first blanch this was merely another addition from women who have recently given birth and have come to believe that having done so, they have unlocked the secrets of the universe. But on further reading this is a tale of a woman not just at war with men but also her own male child.
Full column here.
At the risk of kicking off another climate change tempest, anyone who thinks they know what’s happening with sea-level rises might want to think about this:

Don’t worry about it TV. Most of the worlds population will starve to death before they drown.
Trivalve (10.22am)
Very interesting TV. A damning report by all accoubts. Problematic positioning of guages/sensors, lack of appreciation by scientists, lack of coordination between agencies, etc.
The outcome – no one knows if the sea level/levels is/are rising or falling. And no one seems to give a hoot.
I’ve been trying to tell me old mate JB about this for yonks, but he wont listen.
Thank for bringing it to our attention.
Well done TV, talk about the ties that bind.
This is the point about the great climate debate. It’s called measurement, especially when we’re talking fractions of degrees. Not to mention the number of degrees it takes for bloody “con census”.
If I hear the words the science is in again I’ll vomit. It ain’t.
If only all this effort was directed at cleaning up the stains we humans have put on the planet, pollution, water systems and yep, too many people we could be well on the way to sustainability.
Trying to solve the wrong problem is most likely going to give the wrong result, again.

Penny 03:29pm.
I agree with what you saying pressure upon them is relentless while I fully understand that many in the world are facing mental breakdowns like this , sometimes Penny is is hard to get into their life to find out problems of mental illness them locking up . If only early warning signs appear , I am sure many us could attend immediately .Do you remember the great Steve Rogers? No one seen that coming then it was all over , a very sad case .
My son had to attend two funerals , one a class mate , the other , a footy player now in the heavens above .Darren found it hard when the fund raising began at our local club with many class mate broke down realising the parents had no money to bury their son .
Yes Penny I feel sorry because there will be more in this mental illness and Jeff Kennett is already on top of this issue .Yvonne also made some good points on the children suffering as I did with the wife even though my wording was a little erratic. Lets hope Penny we are able to get some detection of warning signs out there on this silent illness difficult to diagnosis on these people suffering inside under pressure to perform being hard as it is.
Cheers.
Over 800 comments here – must be a record JTI!!
No, I think one on cricket got over a thousand a few years ago.

“Just when you thought they couldn’t get any further back down the evolutionary chain. Wouldn’t it be just wonderful if Bernardi and Abbott came to blows? I mean literally. Belted the Bejezus out of each other.
And before you start Carl, nature is nature I only disapprove of violence in the higher forms. ”
Did you really have to include that last sentence JB?
Now you’ve gone and made me feel guilty about decending to have a crack at you every now and then me old mate.
No of course I didn’t have to include it. I referred to “notes to self” yesterdays list, and underlined was the notation “must try to annoy the hell out of Carl, his remarks have lost their edge of late.”
Have I really made you feel guilty Carl? I doubt it , if you don’t feel guilty about the world we are going to leave our children I don’t think there is much you would feel guilty about.
In any case, you feel guilty about having a go at me? Dilligaf?

“Address EVERY point I have made please…I have made 21 points. Please address them.
You have cherry-picked ONE.”
You presented a house of cards Bassy (again), I flicked out the key one (the HC judgement) and the rest came tumbling down. All 20 of them. They became irrelevant mate.
i won’t claim any great record playing cricket, a large lack of talent held me back there, but i have watched a hell of a lot of it, and i can’t recall an australian side quite like this one.
three who are going very well, Crenshaw, smith and handscombe play like they had a quick look at the coaching manual and put it back on the shelf, and warner may have a more conventional technique but his approach would not have sat well with the old school coaches.
it makes me wonder what the cast of entourage of ex-players who seem to follow the circuit actually do.
india and then england in england i think, will this new approach stand up to a bit more sideways movement?
At that level batting coaches don’t count for much, mate. They’re on the payroll and the get very good at throw downs but they’re not much more than advisers and consultants.
i rather like that that our players have their own method, and have not had that coached out of them, but it will be interesting to see how they go on more testing tracks.
india will be tough, the poms won there a while ago, then lost this year despite making big scores, the blowing looks to be the key.
Ashes here next year, mate. Pat Cummins is being set for that. He and Starc would be a handful for any top order. I think the 12 that won today will all go to India with maybe Mitch Marsh and another quick added in. They won’t take the Ferrari out for a spin in the subcontinent. The batting is as good as it’s been for the last three or four years. Smith breaks just about every rule in the book but despite all the shuffling around the crease he keeps his head very still at contact. Yeah, he might nick a bit on English wickets and the whole team has a question mark over it on low turners. Dave Warner and Smith will end up among the all time greats. If Khawaja, Handscomb, Renshaw etc can contribute, they will go all right anywhere.
Does that include Mickey Edwards the super surfin’ sub?
It’s a bit scary but I find myself agreeing with Betty http://www.smh.com.au/comment/sydney-isnt-a-big-retirement-village-it-cant-be-perfectly-safe-20170105-gtmgud.html
Off to Canberra for the weekend to see the Versailles exhibition and the bits and pieces from the British Museum at the National Museum, footy tips folks although I’ll still send the usual reminder

No Budget problem if Churches and Religious groups payed tax.
JTI
Not sure if you are wrapping this overnight but a change of target on a familiar theme – Hyperbolic generalizations.
Dismayed,
For your assertion to be true the taxing of churches and religious needs to yield $35B pa.
So here goes:
Put to one side rates Land tax, Power concessions etc – State & Local Govt.
Federal Tax exemptions, the rules are detailed on the ATO site. They apply to all 600,000 certified charitable entities; the core requirements;
To be registered as a Charitable Entity by the Australian Charity and Not for Profit Commission and
To be further endorsed by the ATO and
to be Not for Profit with all income directed to the declared charitable endeavour.
Now if you are proposing to remove these exemptions from all 600,000 best of luck getting that public policy up.
So let us assume for purposes of our discussion these exemptions are removed only from Churches and Religious and that there activities are translated into some ‘business entity’.
Company tax. Given by definition they are Not for Profit what profit is to be taxed at Company Tax rate? Yield Zero.
Capital Gains Tax. I am sure your knowledge will allow you to agree that the overwhelming portion of the Property Portfolio of the Big Churches has been owned for many years. Certainly prior to 1985. Thus for CGT purposes any sales are exempt. Yield Zero.
GST. In concert with most if not all Business Entities calculation of GST obligations requires the BAS calculation. All GST totals about $85B pa. What would be the yield from these Church businesses? Yield – I have no idea.
Employee Exemptions.
Fringe Benefit Tax. The productivity commission estimates there are about 40,000 religious employees. 12M employees yield $4.5B pa. So 40,000 if nothing changes Yield perhaps $150M.
Income Tax. One assumes incomes will need to be increased to reflect the new taxable status, which might in fact reduce FBT significantly, but let’s ignore that wrinkle. 12M employees generate about $180B income tax. What will 40,000 generate? Yield $650M.
So at this point we are struggling to make $1B pa. Only $34B pa to go!!!
Over to you.
Some wild generalisations here PLMO not readable sorry very confusing waffle .
You sly old waffler.

JB,
You old spoilsport you!!!
i was waiting for Dismayed to post this ’round-robin’ article. What does it actually say about specific figures and likely tax revenues? And of course the ‘Secular Party’ which it quotes is going to totally objective!!
I will await Dismayed response because he of course having studied this issue deeply over the many years he has been quoting it, will be able to satisfy us all with clear, unambiguous, fully referenced costings and details of the political and legislative changes necessary!!
Then I, you and Kath can analyse and comment.
Waiting ….. waiting Dismayed …..over to you!!
plmo says: January 7, 2017 at 7:18 pm. You haven’t got a pray. I have already presented empirical, irrefutable evidence several times how much religious groups are subsidised directly and through concessions and the huge cost to the budget which if returned in some small measure would go a long way to correcting the balance. As with most cons regardless of the evidence presented you will refuse to acknowledge the facts because it does not suit your religiously held beliefs because to do so would force you to actually take responsibility for your fantastical belief structure. The Catholic church on the best estimates from available evidence have over $100 million in holdings in Australia with not a cent of their collections taxed on the contrary they are heavily subsidised and make merry with the many concession afforded to them. Goodness help us all.
Garn, stop beating about the bush and pay yer taxes yer sly old god botherers!

Groaaaaan! A mini ice age would qualify as “climate” Mack. Perth’s cold winter was a weather event and Perth’s climate is getting hotter, and is definitely not entering a mini ice age as suggested by Robin recently.
Keep trying.
Lou O TOD 2:25PM
Double groan! Clowns to the left, clowns to the right. Try and learn something this year Lou.
Hypothetically, if you had the coldest winter on record in the hottest year on record would that suggest something to you? Anything at all?
Warmer oceans mean more water vapor in the air. Are you with this so far?

Speed reading again JB? I was talking about your 40 degree days comment being about weather not climate. You guys are just thrashing around on this climate change issue. As I stated earlier, I don’t deny the science about climate change, but you extremists are so thin skinned you believe everyone is a denier. It ain’t so sunshine. haha, pun intended.
I don’t recall saying it was climate Mack.
And we are not thrashing around. And we are anything but extremists. You’re just not living in the real world. If you don’t want to be regarded as a denier then stop taking cheap shots, but you are actually helping,
me explain me not complain, you do that, I do this. thanks for coming

%&$#@&& extremists!
Sorry to give you the bad news JB, but you are extreme about AGW, 911 & the Apollo moon program just for starters.
Nothing extreme about any of that Mack. It’s just plain common sense, science and the outgrowing of the childish belief that priests and politicians always tell the truth. Manned moon landings are obviously ridiculous even now, and I don’t like to harp, it’s not in my nature, again, just what was it that made the entire top of that building separate and land upside down adjacent to the collapse pile?
Just hearing some state news that coach J Hird may have problems we don’t know about and I wish him well on his recovery and get back into coaching soon .
Rodent, I’m not picking on you, I’m really not, but we all know the circumstances leading to James Hird’s problems. He will never coach again Rodent, in fact if some people in Melbourne, particularly the sports media have their way, the man may never be able to work again…..period. If I was him I would move my family away from Australia and try to get work outside of the country. He got his MBA in France, maybe that’s where he could start. His wife Tania is a corporate lawyer, maybe they can work overseas and come back when this has all blown over and the angry mob have moved on to someone else to demonise….
I agree Penny. It would be hard, but he’s apparently had employment offers overseas. I think he should leave this country and have a go . It would be unsettling for his children perhaps, but on the other hand it could be an amazing adventure for them all.
He needs to leave the past behind – but the media here sure as hell won’t allow that.
I don’t think the Essendon saga has fully played out yet either. It will continue to haunt him and people will continue to have a go at him.
