Here I was all set to knock out a Christmas column full of cheer and bonhomie but life, or more accurately, Daily Life has intervened.

I normally disapprove of intra-media byplays but Fairfax Media’s Daily Life section has become so full of cranky third wave feminism that someone needs to hold it up to the light. Among this waste of ink and kilobyte street corner psychobabble, comes a contribution from self described feminist Polly Dunning who tells her harrowing tale of giving birth to a shame boy. The good news is she’s slowly getting over it.

I’m not allowed to swear anymore, at least not at volume but this is sorely testing my already fragile grip on self-control.

At first blanch this was merely another addition from women who have recently given birth and have come to believe that having done so, they have unlocked the secrets of the universe. But on further reading this is a tale of a woman not just at war with men but also her own male child.

Full column here.

Great effort by the Aussies when they finally got on the pink park today.

Now who was the sage who said Lyon should be dropped? Three for again so far, including a cracker to bowl Diaz through the gate that span sideways. Bloody brilliant, all the other spin hopefuls are in his shadow.

Hats off to Glen McGrath for his continued devotion to his first wife and the cause. There are a growing number of women who are eternally grateful for what the McGrath foundation has done to help breast cancer survivors.

Chappelli might have floated a draw, but I’ll have a couple of lazy ones on an Australian victory.

    • Dismayed says:

Lyon got one to spin sideways on the Sydney deck. It is way past time Lyon started to bowl outside off. You must have forgotten even Allan border took 11 wickets in a test in Sydney. Michael Clarke took a 3 in 5 balls against India, Nathan Hauritz took a 5 for as well in Sydney. Stick to the shit you know Lou because it aint cricket that’s for sure. Another of the one swallow summer brigade. Get this one some Kentucky duck.

      • Mack the Knife says:

Did you get out of the wrong side of the bed? That was just plain rude, as usual Eddie.

‘It is way past time Lyon started to bowl outside off…..’

I’ll say so. His effort in Hobart still leaves me lost for words.

        • Lou oTOD says:

Like any spinner Smoke he needs the support of his captAin infield placement, and the length of his spells, something Shane Warne has been outspoken about. And true, Lyon has not always done himself any favours.

I’ll bat one back at you. In Melbourne Lyon takes 2 in three balls, three in ten just before Tea. What happens after Tea? Doesn’t get a look in, now that’s lost for words.

      • Lou oTOD says:

Ah good to see you have entered the new year with the same obnoxious tone Dismayed. Try for once to say you were wwwwwrrroonnngg, even Bassy can do that occasionally.

You poo poo Renshaw and he knocks up 184. You poo poo Hanscomb and he takes his own wicket after 110 on the board. As for Lyon, I’d respect the opinion of Warne Taylor Clarke et al before your opinion, however so arrogantly put forward. Not to mention my mate who actually played for Australia.

As for past deads on dodgy SCG wickets, what has that got to do with anything. Yes I remember Border’s effort in 1989 well. Let’s see, that was 28 years ago, you must have been watching it from the comfort of your stroller close to the family small screen.

    • Bella says:

I agree with what you say about the McGrath Foundation itself though in 2008, Glen McGrath was busted on social media smiling for the camera with a gun, a dead endangered elephant & other assorted kills on a safari in Africa. The media storm that ensued had him claiming deep regret but also said it was his “passion” so maybe there’s a chance he’ll do it again. People can’t look at him in the same way now.
What kind of person kills an elephant to alleviate grief LoT?

      • Carl on the Coast says:

Bella – well said and a good question Bella. You’d think a person coping with grief, especially in Glen McGrath’s circumstances, would be inclined to want to nurture, not nuke.

I am saddened that the latest in the Essendon saga, is James Hird being rushed to hospital after a reported ‘overdose’. Leave him alone now everyone, let him get his life back together. I’m more than ever convinced that there has been a huge duck shove from the old administration at Essendon and don’t think we’ll ever come close to the truth. Get well James

Totally annoying when it works properly.

  • BASSMAN says:

The proposed cuts to company tax that may only show growth of 1% in 15yrs time have come under fire from Peter Costello for being less effective at boosting the economy than personal tax cuts. Costello said personal tax cuts rather than just company tax cuts were necessary to ensure a more productive and competitive economy-another way of saying Jobsongrowth. If you can’t convince your former Treasurer on Jobsongrowth you are stuffed! But then again, it was Costello who gave us the $90billion structural deficit that is still around our neck…a large part of it which was tax cuts that we could never afford.

  • Lou oTOD says:

Earlier thread on legal marijuana sales in the US, the market turnover last year was US$9.3 billion, up 30% on prior year.

This industry growth exceeds the dot com boom, although only 8 States now legalising it with five of them just since the recent elections. I’m sure the 22% of the population living in these States have also had plenty of visitors coming down the Interstate.

Can you imagine if they did the same for cocaine. Pablo Escobar would be turning in his grave.

    Dismayed (Jan 5, 10.27am)

says: “Don’t defame me Carl. BP 115/65 has been for years. Maybe after a big week on the drink (not very often) it goes as high as 125/75. “I wont go back through the ages of the blog but I have very good memory recall. Goodness help us. Now that is faith.”

I’m pleased for you mate that your cardiovascular system is A-OK.

But I’m a bit concerned about the ‘cop-out’ syndrome you appear to regularly exhibit when gently pressed for a simple reference to allow you to erase what could be a potentially libellous claim on your part. Wouldn’t want to see it develop into a chronic problem, given your otherwise reportedly good physical health.

Btw, have you had your height checked out lately mate?

    • Dismayed says:

Don’t defame me Carl “potentially libellous claim” ?? get grip for once. You have previously told me to “just conform you routinely “don’t recall” things like Milton and many of other of the old cons on here when you are shown to be hypocritical which is somewhat of a constant for a con also. No cop outs by me. I simply cannot be bothered with the dual requirement of bringing you cons into the modern world and having to highlight the ridiculousness of your ways along with the need to continually “point out” your past many many indiscretions and ongoing hypocrisy due to your apparent oldtimers or wilful ignorance or a bit of both. Try this one for size again. I have stated many many times and NO I am not going to point out where and when. Humility is the lesson in life we should all learn. you and many of you con mates here are very very late for the class.

Read my post again and address the issues I mentioned…every attempt made by Labor to stop the boats was barricaded by your mob/they cheered every boat in because they wanted more boats-they were caught out in the party room and dobbed in by their own kind/Abbott has recently changed his mind and now says Malaysia shld have been an option and that he should not have played politics so hard-more hypocrisy/Six hundred more asylum seekers died attempting to come to Australia after the Malaysian Solution was sunk by Abbott. That was the human cost/the Liberals then squealed they wld never send refugees to a country that was not a signatory…but they did it for 6 years and are still doing it now-more hypocrisy-no comment son?/
    &
U mention paying people smugglers/this mob in now has handed hundreds of thousands of dollars to smugglers to turn back or haven’t you been watching?/ The budget is stuffed yet we are spending $500,000 per refugee to prove a political point. $55million has been wasted housing 2 asylum seekers in Cambodia. Budget emergency? No comment son?/ Boats have not been arriving because they have been turned back, not because we have locked up children in remote and cruel prison conditions. There is not one shred of evidence that proves imprisoning children deters boats./ We have not lost control of our borders-never have/The Looters were completely opposed to allowing boats to arrive here well before there was any kind of concern about deaths at sea. /
    &
The secrecy-the fact that no journalists are allowed on the islands to help balance the right wing arguments. You have failed to address or explain these issues and you are a biased right wing embarrassment condoning the cruelty and misery that exists on these islands. Have you no feelings at all for these people who have committed no crime, are treated worse than murderers (murderers know how long their sentence is)…and what for? VOTES! Yes Labor had detention centres but I can never remember them climbing over the backs of children behind barbed wire, accusing them of bringing in terrible diseases, stealing our jobs, being terrorists or using them as election fodder like the Liberals have. Please tell me when a Labor politician lied about parents throwing their children into the water. Did they REALLY need to stoop so low? Open your eyes. If you cannot see the Liberals have used refugees for electoral gain you are already in your coffin. Address the issues above.

    • Carl on the Coast says:

      BASSMAN (5/1, 2.59pm)

says: “Six hundred more asylum seekers died attempting to come to Australia after the Malaysian Solution was sunk by Abbott.”

Everyone but yourself Bassy knows that it was the High Court judgement that scuttled and sank your Labor’s Maylasia refugee swap plan. It was apparently your relevant Labor minister who did not do his homework, as you obviously have not done on this occasion, and as your comment above so clearly illustrates.

But then its understandable, as you “make no claims” to being a retired educator (see 4/1, 9.54pm).

I keep telling you Bassy, ITS THE SCRAPBOOK! mate, ITS THE SCRAPBOOK!

    • plmo says:

      B’Man

      Love to respond.

First off ‘What is this my Mob’ stuff. You have absolutely no knowledge of my ‘political persuasion’ beyond my declared membership of the ‘Throw the Bastards Out’ party!!

But ….. The Malaysia solution was not sunk by Abbott, it was ‘sunk’ by the High Court. Yes Abbott know suggests he could have acquiesced, but hindsight is a beautiful thing. But … The ‘Off Shore’ camps were in fact recreated by Labor in a desperate attempt to claw back credibility.

But… Yes Smugglers have been bought off. But …. the ‘off-shore’ solution including turnbacks and camps etc has been and is now bi-partisan policy. It is demonstrably supported by the majority of Australians.

But… who has been imprisoning children – the number of children in detention has been dropping dramatically.
Turning back boats before deaths at sea – True. So?

But… Journalists have been allowed on Manus and Nauru – Chris Kenny and others.

But… ‘I am a biased right wing … condoning cruelty and misery … lacking feelings at all … etc etc’ – well if is true (which it is not) – I must be in good company of the majority of my fellow Australians.

B’Man again all I take issue with is your uncontrolled urge to use hyperbolic generalities and it seems ‘mid-level abuse’ directed at anyone who does not agree with your specific political narrative.

Wake up – there is just an outside chance that your personal view of the world is in the minority – more importantly it is without a doubt contrary to the policies of the two major political parties and thus in our collective ongoing discussions re ‘politics in Australia’, your view is unlikely to prevail – whatever its merits or otherwise!!

If pissing into the wind brings you pleasure and a warm inner glow – who am I to deny you – but the reality is such efforts on your behalf are unlikely to bring about the changes in policy you so fervently seek.

Similarly, ascribing the basest of motives to those who disagree with you is unlikely to win hearts and minds – although I must say your unsolicited character assessment is the nicest thing people have said about me in 2017!!

      • BASSMAN says:

You have nowhere near addressed the many points I have made on this post or the previous one…only Murdoch favourites have been allowed on the islands. There is an $8000 non refundable visa fee to visit Manus to deter journalists. Rings no bells for you? You know darn well the place is covered in secrecy with even Drs and educators being threatened by Dutts. The Liberals could have voted with Labor to change the High Court decision, even the law itself.
        &
I conceded Labor had detention facilities but I ALSO said Labor never used detainees as election fodder like the Liberals have or detained people forever with no hope in site…no response from you about this or the lies of children o/board or the hypocrisy of the Liberals saying only those aligned with the Refugee Convention should accept refugees though. The majority of Australians do not want the camps you say-you are wrong. A poll of 1400 people (June 2016) showed 63% of people wanted the detainees processed onshore-of course you will say this is fake news. No comment from you about the billions this is costing us or the fact that imprisoning children has nothing to do with deterring boats?
        &
You concede smugglers have been bought off by the Liberals making them smugglers themselves…stuffs your argument there son. You have failed miserably to address most of the issues I have raised. You have cherry-picked a few points and have made a huge balls-up of trying to attack them. Now go back to Liberal Headquarters or Dutts’ staffroom or that rock you live under. No more on this. If you condone cruelty like this I fear for your own family. Go and gnaw on what is left off your Christmas ham bone…. The End.

    • JackSprat says:

And since 85% of the boat people are still on welfare and many are unlikely ever to get off it, we have spent what because Rudd was so arrogant and has since admitted it.
Assume $20,000 a head, of the 20,000 that came in during the last bit Julia’s useless reign let’s assume that half receive welfare ( should take care of children etc), that makes $200,000,000 a year which comes out at a cool $1 billion since Labor received its just deserves.
Makes border protection look cheap in comparison – and that does not take into account the rest who slipped in under Labor’s misguided principals..
I think that it is not PLMO who is addressing the issues.

      • BASSMAN says:

A piss in the ocean compared to the number of lazy Aussies on welfare or the thousands who come by plane. Why discriminate against people who come by boat to seek asylum when thousands more come by plane?

        • JackSprat says:

What makes you think I discriminate against anybody?
A drop in the bucket you say? You are the one who continually brings the deficit to one’s attention but when a particular piece of expenditure is slated back to your heroes you just brush it off.
The deficit is now so bad that we cannot afford largesse for anybody.
As to “the thousands who come by plane” = another furphy and a bit of crazy logic used time and time again – an attempt to compare a subject with something that makes said subject look good when both examples are wrong.
It’s like the media when the Government does something – for the sake of a headline let’s find a few people who are disadvantaged by the decision and plaster their cases all over the media but never ever look at the full picture and the reasons behind the cases.
All sides do it – particularly the Government with ethnic groups. You can bet your bottom dollar when a particular ethic group is attracting huge amounts of media attention that a couple of glowing examples will be trotted out in the hope that the great unwashed will be persuaded that said ethnic group are all good guys with only a few bad apples. It does not work and we just keep getting more laws like 18c which just sends attitudes festering underground.

        • Dismayed says:

Approx. 50,000 per year arrive by plane and claim asylum after over staying visa’s.
