Humble servant of the Nation

In Australia, The New York Times of our lives

I have been perusing the pages of The New York Times so you don’t have to.

With great sound and fury, the NYT recently opened up an office in this Wide Brown Land and the results have been odd, to say the least.

It’s hard to know who the Australian articles are written for. Are they for Americans to glean a greater understanding of a land so far away they couldn’t care less about it, or are they written for the meagre number of Australian subscribers who signed up during the US presidential election, only to forget to unsubscribe after all the votes were counted?

Either way, the Times fails miserably.

Full column here.

    Bella,
How good were the Cows last night! Michael Morgan really stepped up into JT’s shoes!

    • Bella says:

Great to see my Cowboys winning without JT & winning convincingly.
Morgan at his best & what about Ethan Lowe’s conversions?
      Ride’em Cowboys!

Further, Jack, I’ve noted Abbott is falling behind in the grief stakes. I mean, there’s nothing more capitalist than capitalising on personal misfortune. Isn’t there some sad episode in Tony’s family he can drag out for a cameo of public weeping? The public are mugs for that sort of caper, and I can prove it. Winning!

I’ve just found a way to get West Coast to win, I picked against them for the first time this season. Bloody hell, what is the opposite of kiss of death?

  • Huger Unson says:

Aiming for a click-baitable headline, Jack? The list of key phrases is at http://www.niemanlab.org/2017/06/trying-to-write-a-killer-headline-for-social-here-are-some-of-the-most-and-least-effective-phrases/
I can add a couple, if you ever commit an offense and need to make public atonement.
Inclusion of “deeply, deeply sorry” and “heart-broken” are tried & true winners that help keep the brand all shiny. Humility, oodles of, and sobs. (Disclosure: I am part owner of the Thespian School for Winners.)

  • Henry Blofeld says:

A Sunday morning joke for you Mr Insider, and its a quickie. The GREENS! You haven’t written about this shambolic mob of late, I cant recall anyway?

  • Dwight says:

    Canada’s sesquicentennial
    154 years since Gettysburg
    America’s 241st

    Busy few days history wise.

  • Henry Blofeld says:

Amazing, Mr Insider, that we now see ex ousted PM Tony Abbott prancing about like a ‘”statesman” when we all know what a disaster he was as PM, helped of course by a few others like Pyne , Hockey and co. Despised by many in his own Party and loathed by the Electorate, you don’t accumulate 30 Negative Newspolls if you are doing well. He is now nothing more than “Rudd Mark 2”.

I read the NYT online most days, mainly for the obituaries and their real estate section (you get more bang for your buck in the US imo, except for Manhattan and San Fran and one or 2 others). Alas I too noticed the new OZ section and avoided reading them mainly because of the headings and topic. So it’s reassuring that Jack is reading them on our behalf and am sure he will pass on anything worthwhile.
Bloody Geelong denied me sneaking a point on the mob. That and Richmond’s win would have seen me streak away from Tracy (ooh!).

    • Tracy says:

      Milton streaking….eeurgh!
Ok admit it, whose got the Tracy footy tipping voodoo doll, never has there been such a plummet in tipping as I have suffered this season…..TV?
Changing the subject (gladly) 2017 TdeF off and a bloody good time trial by Geraint Thomas.

      • Milton says:

Is Gabriel Gateux still doing his bit, Tracy?

        • Tracy says:

He sure is, nice cookbook out which is on my Christmas list

        • Tracy says:

Forgot to say Milt, stage 2 covered some old haunts. Gabriel went to Monchau which is a beautiful village in the Ardenne we often used to nick down to for a Sunday trip, wonderful brewery there. The stage also went through Neuss, Monchengladbach down to Liege gee memories🙂

  • The Outsider says:

    Great Cats/Giants game.

What a season this is turning out to be!

  • Boadicea says:

It’s not hard to understand how Trump got elected POTUS really

    • Henry Blofeld says:

I am loving him Boadicea, he’s a breath of fresh air after a lifetime of Pollies who say one thing and do another POTUS Trump does what he says he will do and is beholden to no one at all. Look at the wallies we have here in Australia FGS bloody hopeless. Cheers. P.S. I feel he’s not far off giving Kimmie Jong-un a rude “hello”!

    • Jean Baptiste says:

At least they didn’t vote Tony Abbott PMOA.

    • The Outsider says:

I don’t understand how it happened. I thought that the large majority of US voters would hold their noses and vote for Hilary Clinton.

It’s difficult to understand why, given Donald Trump’s performance to date, that even those who voted for Trump would continue to support him.

      • Boadicea says:

It never fails to astound me how a country with an undoubted depth of possible outstanding candidates managed to come up with those two deplorables

      • Bella says:

It’s all quite bizarre to me TO.
The conclusion I come to, even after those child-like twitter rants of hate, is that Americans have accepted his nutty bottom-of-the-barrel behaviour as normal.
When they finally twig he’s ‘not all there’ Trump will be responsible for yet another World War.

      • Jean Baptiste says:

Watched an episode of “House of Cards” last night. FU was at an invitation only meeting of the uber wealthy doing their chummy stuff. I think he explained quite well in one of his monologues who makes Presidents in the United States.
“Tell me what you want” when addressing the big powers brokers said it all.
Trump is a useful idiot for now, they’ll get rid of him and put their man Pence in place when Trump outlives his usefulness.
Underwood is right , the Americans (like Australians) are children. Do what they are told to do and believe what they are told to believe.

If only we look instead of gawking, (Brecht)

        • Boadicea says:

Its pretty bloody sad, JB, when the POTUS is sending out extremely childish tweets. I mean, for God’s sake.
Re your comment above, I can’t really see MT resorting to that behaviour – nor do I think Australians would put up with it.
Christ, the ”w” key on my keyboard is not operating. Every time I need to use it I have to change to touchscreen. It becomes a challenge to find something missing that particular letter in the event of typing something here!!!!!
