I’m going to miss Rodney Culleton. He has painted a vision of a libertarian Australia where our laws and indeed our entire legal system can be casually brushed off with a badly spelt submission.
Got a bill you’d rather not pay? That mortgage you’ve taken out bearing down on you? Parking fines piling up? Don’t fret. Fire off a diner’s menu of grievances to the High Court. Easy-peasy.
Welcome to Rodney Culleton’s Australia, a state of societal perfection where paying one’s creditors is voluntary, actions have no consequences and people can, nay must do, whatever they feel like.
Full column here.
While we look aghast at the goings on with One Nation, which now may have to be renamed “Four Nations” and happy a friendly chuckle at their gormless supporters, we see Mr Insider a clever repositioning going on with ex ousted PM Abbott who is far from a spent force and looking like a diamond compared to the chunk of “coal” that is “current” PM Turnbull. Am sure the Libs know they will have to move on Turnbull in time so it may be sooner than later. Five consecutive negative Newspolls for Turnbull and this is his good time!

I see Labor Senator Terri Butler is being sued for defamation in the Qld Magistrates court for her outburst against a QUT student accusing him of perjury and being a racist on Q&A the other night. Bit silly considering she is a lawyer, of Maurice Blackburn fame of course.

Checked it out! Your friend is one of the sane ones in a world of “Contrabulous Phantasmagoricals” (credits where applicable for the inspiration ). Phantasmagoricals assigned hence as the new descriptor for citizens who are either too stupid or underinformed to appreciate the urgency for addressing AGW .
I’m inclined to believe we as a monkey nut jar trapped species are already stuffed, even if we could convert to nuclear immediately. The attempt would probably precipitate a nuclear war anyway.
Again we have a new hottest year on record, clearly this is going exponential but still some bona fide whack jobs believe the indicators point to a mini ice age.
Culleton is nuts? Sure but no more nuts than the rest of us blithering bilge brains blithely driving this great ship of fools , every inch of canvas aloft, into oblivion.
Some advanced species of cosmic archaeological students might discover our remains and conclude that ours was the generation that murdered our grandchildren in advance, or suppose that we suicided en masse in order to please the apocalyptic lunatic deity of our own invention. We certainly created him in our own image as it turns out.

We might serve as a salutary warning for other evolving species in the great “out there”. Monkeys who start losing their hair should be regarded with great suspicion unless their brains are properly developed to cope with their ambitions.
Give ’em heaps.
English not my first language and I can mess it up pretty bad, but that just makes no sense at all. This guy is so far out has pi for a zip code.
Carl on the Coast: Nov 23, 4.40pm
” the good senator’s mild outbursts”?
Jeepers Carl – have you read them?
Totally whacko if you ask me!
… and the ridiculous QUT student drama continues. Defamation case against Terri Butler launched. Nice to see the students on the front foot though.
MP’s in legal action of various sorts is becoming a sort of regular sideshow whilst governance of this country wallows in the associated mire.
The only ones enjoying this would be the legal fraternity who would be grinning all the way to the bank.
I’m over it…….
What sort of an MP and lawyer says “I know how the law works” and then goes ahead and repeats as fact allegations that a court has already found have no identifiable basis in fact?
I’d be hoping Justice Jarrett would be asking prosecutors to look at a contempt of court charge as well.
Well, Rod Culleton does, but not Terri Butler. If you listen carefully, underneath Greg Sheridan’s pompous bellowing over the top of everybody, you will hear her quite clearly stating the allegations as _allegations_. That is simply noting something that is a matter of public record, and her point was that the matter was not trivial, not whether the allegations were true or not, and not whether the decision was correct or not.
You seem to misunderstand contempt of court. You can’t prejudice cases that are still running, but you’re perfectly free to comment as critically as you like on completed decisions. It’s called free speech. Theoretically you can get done for directly impugning the integrity of a judge but it’s very rare these days for anyone to be prosecuted for that, and just saying they were wrong would not be enough.
It’s a bit rich for 18C-phobes to be baying for a speech-based prosecution, especially for contempt, which is one of the most un-free-speechy laws around.
I know she stated they were allegations, but she also insisted that every time the matter be discussed the allegations of the student concerned using the word “nigger” be raised. The court accepted that he didn’t – although she falsely claimed the court had made no ruling on the matter – but she’s clearly decided the man is guilty, otherwise why insist on the allegations being repeated every time the matter is discussed?
As I commented on Hedley Thomas’s piece, I’m happy to go along with that, as long as every time Julia Gillard’s name is mentioned we raise her alleged corruption, and every time Bill Shorten gets a mention we also say that he’s an alleged rapist.
These people, with you cheering along John, are trying to ruin the life of a young man whose only crime was to try and enter an unmarked, racially-segregated part of a university. You’re a real humanitarian.
Wait a minute! How am I “cheering on” the ruining of someone’s life? By saying that someone should not be prosecuted for stating what the allegations were in a legal case? Seriously? If anyone is ruining that young man’s life it’s the activist silk who is dragging the matter out with this ridiculous bit of attention-seeking.
Unfortunately, this looks like yet another NewsCorp beat-up, using its regrettable SOP of singling out a whipping-boy as a proxy for the other side of a campaign they want to run — be it Robert Manne, Larissa Behrendt, Roz Ward, Gillian Triggs or now Butler. It’s obviously easier to invent a bogeyman than it is to fairly canvass the issues.
As for the allegations against Gillard, mentioning them frequently was exactly what much of the commentariat did at the time. I don’t recall anyone demanding that the writers be sued for defamation or charged with contempt.
Looks like Pauline’s going to get let down by the dickhead men that her party invariably attracts yet again.
A conspiracy theorist with evil eyes, this barking fruitcake, and the other bloke. At least it’s not outright fascists and Nazis like last time – the ones that wrote her autobiography for her.
We’ll just have to make sure not to invite to any parties where any half-decent crockery is used – not that he’s likely to turn up until a day or two later.
The situation with the chiefs-of-staff seems even funnier.

Sorry, OT but any of you familiar with Jeff Duff and Kush? I’m guessing BASSMAN and Rodent might have travelled in the same circles. Bit of trivia, I just found out at the weekend one of my neighbours was the baritone / alto sax player with them and later with Grand Wazoo. They used to do Hey Hey It’s Saturday fairly regularly.
Had a very pleasant Sunday arvo watching John’s old videos; even got to fondle his Aria (steady on, Milton . . .) A sample:

Duffo is often out and about in Darlo/KingsX. Like every man and his dog he got onto the Bowie tribute bandwagon and I think he’s still milking it. He’s a great live performer and the chicks dig him. One memorable performance got him banned from the (old) Marble Bar when he had all the girls on stage performing Walk On The Wild Side with him. It only took a few extra bawdy lyrics and some visuals and then no more Marble Bar for him.
Certainly a character and it hasn’t hurt any of his bands to have him out front.
I forgot to mention that you may have to double the volume of your beer brewing for it sounds like you may have a dangerous neighbour. And, don’t forget to buy another packet of tallies for all those jazz cigarettes.
I remember. Ahead of his time in some ways I would imagine.
I loved that song as a kid. I was so innocent at the time I didn’t even notice what he was wearing in the clip.
yes, i remember, some pretty good shows,
“Purist”, Mr Blowfly”? In what way are you a “purist”, and what does the term mean? So the 30 odd percent of people in Orange who voted for the Shooters Party are wackos? A 30% swing in a State seat is not a reaction against Federal politics, it is against a certain decision of the State Government who are trying to buy the votes of the inner city scum, and unfortunately supported by a guy who actually lived and worked west of the mountains.
In the past I have worked and lived west of the mountains, and now live in inner city Sydney. Those “wackos” actually have more common sense in each of their little fingers that it would seem that you have in total judging by your comments.
Oh my. ” Inner City scum” you do realise 95% of Australians live in cities? You might almost be as bright as dutton. A very dark world that is. You project some very concerning inner issues tovarich.
Inner city scum dismal. The majority are suburban residents whose views are ignored. Pity you can not read and understand
Oh I forgot to mention. There is NO such thing as “common sense” those that believe in it show no sense at all. There is individual logic, reasoned and critical thinking the ability to perceive and make judgements but no such thing as “common sense” Another construct like the cons “media elites” you know those that dare hold them to account. You seem to be struggling tovarich.
JOH: Wed 9.17pm
That’s probably exactly what happened JOH. Protest votes. Same with Brexit – and possibly at our next election here, unless there is significant improvement in the governance of this country.
I would hazard a wager that One Nation will pick up more seats – particularly in Qld. I am disappointed with Turnbull – but not that disappointed that I wouwkd vote for Shorten. I could not vote for One Nation. Which means I may not votex at all……
Interestingly, Hinch seems to be injecting some sense of responsibility into the senate and things may get done – instead of this infinite limbo we seem to have been in.
