Denis Ryan has a win at last

Denis Ryan has had a busy time of it. On the 86-year-old former cop’s call list this morning was the Washington Post, the BBC and a courtesy call from the Victorian Premier, Dan Andrews.

The cop who tried to prosecute one of the most prolific paedophile priests in our history 46 years ago and came off second best received a compensation payment from the Andrews government yesterday. The undisclosed amount is one Ryan is satisfied with.

There have been a few backslappers step forward in the last 24 hours. In a tweet yesterday, senator Derryn Hinch described Ryan as “one of the bravest, moral men I have ever known.” Hinch might know of Ryan but he’s never met him.

  • Henry Blofeld says:

A quote from Denis Ryan, Mr Insider, after his Compensation was announced by the Victorian government. He is still thinking of others what a great man.
“Heck it’s a great, great thing to hear,” he said.
“It’ll make quite a difference to me.”
“Mr Ryan said he had no plans for the money at this stage.
“When I come down to earth, I’ll think about such things,” he said.
But on the question of redemption, Mr Ryan was much more certain.
“I don’t think I’ll ever feel vindicated,” he said.
“It’ll never leave my mind,” he said. “I just think of the victims, they suffered so much more than me.”

It has actually rained here in Sydney overnight, I know that because the road is wet……..haven’t seen that in I don’t know how long. It’s been a looong summer.

    • JackSprat says:

Should come to Hawks Nest Tracy.

I have never seen rain like it in a long time. It looks like the first week is going to be a write off.

      • Tracy says:

It’s the Forestville exclusion zone here, city burns it off from the south and west, I can watch it raining over towards Lindfield/St Ives from the kitchen window but not a drop here. Long time since we had heavy rain, keeping the bromeliads and ferns watered for the little froggies we have out front.
Not getting the usual frog chorus we get this time of year but there have been a few possum fights on the roof, a racket for such a small animal

        • JackSprat says:

          Should try Terrey Hills Tracey.

It can be fine driving along Forestway until you get almost to Mona Vales Road – and then it pours.

          • Tracy says:

Same happens Roseville Bridge, once you cross to Roseville Chase it’s either raining or the grounds wet.
Isn’t Warringah Road/Forestway a dogs breakfast, hospital is going to be finished way before the new road system.

            • JackSprat says:

Every time I go past there seems to be one person working and the rest, but not a lot, watching..

For a project that is way behind, there does not seem to be much urgency.

    • Wissendorf. says:

The PC term is ‘follically challenged’.

      • JackSprat says:

Don’t know if that will make the new NSW curriculum Wiss.

The new one hopefully expects kids to Read, Write and Arithmetic by the time they are 8.

Apparently the current one expects to have woven into all subjects that we are part of Asia and stuff on Aboriginals – apparently that’s a bit difficult with Maths and Science. That’s along with Pet Care, Road safety, how to behave online, alcohol and drug safety, health and fitness, water safety, CPR, first aid etc etc.

All good stuff but it has all been added over the last 30 years and nothing has been taken out.

  • Gryzly says:

Henry, I have it on good authority (who knew?) that all and sundry on the blog have connected to the internet in the recent past. So have spell pal and stop repeating old news like the rest of us still rely on smoke signals for our news.

    • Trivalve says:

Hoo-ray, someone else is thinking that.

Great job by the Swans last night, even after Bruce had given them away. Go Pies and anyone playing the egregious Hawks. And I use the capital H begrudgingly.

  • Gryzly says:

Congrats Dinny, welcome back Jack (cue my theme song) and hello Round 8 for all the AFL footy tippers. What do you reckon about big blokes shouldn’t be tackling little blokes anymore? A load of cobblers in my honest and I am 4′ 2″.

    • Wissendorf. says:

It’s becoming full contact yoga. A wag on the NIRS broadcast said they should take off the player’s numbers and replace it with their weight. Nic Nat’s tackle was a marginal push in the back. Free kick, move on.

JtI, I’m hoping for a Blues win this week. They’re having a rough trot. Losing Murph was a cruel blow when Casbolt was out and Kruezer was still out too. Cripps did a creditable job of captain after being thrown in at the deep end. No cricket scores, he kept them in sight. Ex Cat Darcy Lang debuts this week. Cats get a few back from injury and after the belting they gave GWS last week, The ‘Pies should be worried. They couldn’t shake Brisbane off.

      • Wissendorf. says:

Unfamiliar song – something about Navy Blues. Catchy. They stuck to the task today. Cripps, Curnow and Kruezer strong in the midfield; new face Darcy Lang chimed in with 2 goals. Good game. Better things to come.

        • Jack The Insider says:

They were good today. Four quarter effort. Sing the song!

          • Penny says:

Hmmmm…….no I do have to put my smiley face on and say well done Blues, but only because it’s you JTI…..oh and my husband said I had to. Well done Blues and I have no idea what has gone wrong at Bomber land.
We are in beautiful Uluru today, what a spectacular place, you seriously can understand why it’s such a sacred place. The colors are just magnificent and we’ll go back tomorrow and do the base walk and frown at anyone attempting to do the climb.

    • Milton says:

      Don’t tell porkies, you’re 4’1/2″.

  • Henry Blofeld says:

“UnbeliveabBILL” is what Turnbull and the Lib/Nats are now calling PM In Waiting Bill Shorten, Mr Insider. That’s a bit rough isn’t it, true though sadly after his “cash splash” Budget reply last night.

    • Bella says:

So Henry I guess you don’t remember Turncoat ripping-off Australian workers by doing away with penalty rates? Offering ten bucks a week down the track in place of roughly $50 is hardly a good deal.
Who also won’t benefit from this fake vote grab are pensioners who won’t even get the promised $7 a week energy supplement because, wait for it, the fibs can’t afford it!
Nothing to combat climate change, nothing for homelessness, massive cuts to ABC, science, health, education & finally, after all that gouging ignorance AND a banking RC, ASIC funding cuts will effectively remove 30 staff from our main corporate watchdog. Three cheers for the big end of town hey?
Please understand you are being royally conned mate.

      • Dismayed says:

Hear Hear Bella Hear Hear. Then there is this “Federal officials plan to back the destruction of almost 2000 hectares of pristine Queensland forest in a move that threatens the Great Barrier Reef and undermines a $500 million Turnbull government rescue package for the natural wonder”. this is the worst government in Australia’s history and it just keeps getting worse by the day.

        • Bella says:

It makes absolutely no sense for Turncoat & Frydenberg to ‘say’ they are investing in the GBR but then slyly waive through this massive destructive clearance.
But hey Dismayed, when has this dodgy damaging mob of dinosaurs ever made any sense. Conservation is not in their DNA so they let their big donors call all the shots they want.
They need to be kicked out.

          • Dismayed says:

Worst government in Nations history on just about every count. Note the latest “security” measures the cons want a Police state and no scrutiny from the National broadcaster. The coalition are now a far right party lead by the IPA zealots. Labor’s policies are actually more center right traditional Liberal party policies.

  • wraith says:

Denis Ryan is one who should have had the knighthood. (bloody Prince Flipper!) That’s what knights of legend do, stand up for the most vulnerable, even if they pay a terrible price. Its so wonderful to see his name restored and credit given where it was due. Many thanks should go to all involved in pushing for the guilty to be brought forward. Let’s hope we never have another ‘untouchable’ religion again and in future victims will be heard.
    .
It might be snowing in them thar hills Jack, but I believe the sun has come out here, could it be because you have returned to us? I would say, yes.
    big hugs,

ps I missed all you ‘orrible lot too.

    • Razor says:

The Knights of old wraith used to slaughter and stand over all they thought below them.

      • JackSprat says:

Ah, but then they hired a good PR firm and their image changed to one of shining Armour and good deeds and taking off with the King’s wife.

  • Henry Blofeld says:

Its on Mr Insider and we read that POTUS Trump has announced he will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore on June 12.

Great to see you back, Jack.

Good news, too, about Denis Ryan. About time!
