True crime writer Peter Hoysted, aka ‘Jack the Insider’ returns with the story of one of Australia’s most elaborate criminal enterprises.
From the early 1950s, Melbourne’s Federated Ship Painters and Dockers Union was much more than an affiliation of dock workers.
It became a thriving criminal enterprise, and a front for crimes including murder, theft, extortion and prostitution.
The Union held sway for five decades, and had members who had never done a day’s work on the Docks, but had plenty of experience with killing.
Eventually a Royal Commission was called into their activities, which led to the downfall of a Federal Government.

China now talking about dropping its tariffs. Yet again trump proves the diplomats wrong!
POTUS Trump in a class of his own imho Razor. He has set a new benchmark for incoming Presidents in that the old days of having been a Politician or Public Servant in the past is not what is required. I think we may see now all sorts of clever people step up to the plate in years to come and note Oprah Winfey is testing the waters. Lets hope old Hilary doesn’t have another go, groan! Cheers
Are you sure it was not in their 5 year plan already?? Oh you didn’t know about that. is that Pauline? trump is a disaster for the world. His insular Nationalistic tariff raises will undo all that has been achieved in the last century as predicted a year ago. those still supporting him are continuing to show their lack of ability to see past the nose on their faces. No Surprises.
Dismayed I think last blog a group agreed to not post on your comments and you would reciprocate. I’d be obliged if you would adhere to that.
Kind regards,
Razor
The new tariff type, currency manipulation, has done a better job of destroying those achievements than Trump will ever do
Just happened to be surfing the net and came across this startling article regarding that bastion of honest journalism Michael West. No doubt a decent bloke but many on here are firm believers in ‘He who pays the piper calls the tune’. They have expressed this view ad nauseam regarding the Murdoch press and even thrown the odd hint recently regarding our venerable host. To say I was shocked is an understatement. I, who have always believed in things on face value, have once again become the victim of something allegedly not being what it seems. A lie down and a Bex is on the cards!
Carl as one of the blogs gentler souls I suggest you don’t read this article as it could only destroy your sense of decency.
https://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/media/concern-over-journos-financial-links-with-getup/news-story/20b05c7fe62a7eeba1b7000567040a4c
Thanks Razor, no worries. My sense of decency remains intact, as I trust yours does, notwithstanding our ever so slight infrequent lapses. Not without extreme provocation I might add.
I also trust you have now covered sufficiently to continue fighting the good fight mate, cheers.
It’s not easy Carl, as you well know. One must just get out of bed and continue. I must admit when I see states such as Tasmania and, very soon I imagine, South Australia go ahead, it helps. What does disappoint though is seeing people who decry the sins of the right but are wilfully blind to those of the left. Just Marxist doctrine I suppose. Like Richo once famously said ‘Whatever it takes’.
None is so blind as those who won’t see. Some move on from undergraduate politics. Others never mature unfortunately Carl.
I trust this note finds you fit and well. Coat shiny and all that.
Your correspondent,
Razor
“Marxist doctrine” Razor?
That’s a laugh…😂
“Billions of dollars are spent every year to control the public mind.” Noam Chomsky
Apart from owning the title of the worst government in our history, the LibNats only ever take care of millionaires, never the battlers.
For that reason alone their deceit is total.
Labor don’t come within cooee of that lot but they’ve all excelled at lying to suit their agenda.
Hear hear Bella hear, hear. but a word of caution the cons consider facts to be personal abuse. They are always prepared to dish it out but believe they should be able to do so without return. No Surprises.
Did you see the link about the coalition opening up recreational fishing grounds to commercial fishing? Disgraceful cons
Yes & my reply was lengthy however it disappeared when I hit submit. Suffice to say the crux of my comment was summed up in your last sentence.
What’s next? The GAB for sure. This mob need to be booted out on their ear & the great Anti-Environment Terrorist MPJosh Frydenberg should wake-up to the legacy he’ll wear the blame for when it’s all too late. 🐬
I am always amused by the attempts by Liberals and their media handmaidens to paint GetUp as something sinister, funded as it is almost entirely by millions of small direct donations from individuals to fund campaigns they personally support. The market in action, people!
Meanwhile these same critics seem perfectly relaxed and comfortable with the likes of the oil- and tobacco-funded IPA muppets who disproportionately infect public life, including a good smattering in their own preferred media organs.
Seems they can dish it but not take it!
And the paymaster Soros is just an apolitical philanthropist.
He’s just shelling out what the Obama ad administration gave him through ‘green schemes’ Dwight. Just chump change.
Yes, I’ve noticed Soros is acquiring Rothschild-like status in certain murky corners of the internet.
But he ain’t been spotted in soup kitchen queues either.
I suspect JOH is referring to how much Soros supposedly controls, not his wealth, Carl.
So, one mob supports open borders, high immigration, the destruction of the fossil fuel industry, and reportedly receive funding from a multi billionaire.
While the other mob advocate free market policies, high immigration, deregulation of state enterprises and reportedly receive funding from multi billionaires.
Democracy on a plate/dish one would have thought. What’s the big deal?
Exactly John, they can’t take it & they’re doing everything they can to stop them. They can’t have people protesting their grubby fossil-fuel plans don’t you know. Their biggest donors might stop the dodgy cash flow.
Carla McGrath’s ascention to the chief poo bah of the Press Council was a gobsmacking farce Razor.
Michael West’s banner of an “independent” journalist takes credibility beyond the pale, he’s lucky he has Carla in his corner, given they GetUp together.
Why….?
Just like reneweconomy Lou. Money made off the largesse of advertisers and the rent seekers from the ‘green machine’.
Just for the sake of it I knocked the Roger Rogerson one off on the way home. Very enjoyable. Ditched Phillip Adams to listen to that one!
Fascinating stuff Jack
For what it is worth, $4,000,000 in 1976 has the buying power of $24,6 million n 2017.
https://www.rba.gov.au/calculator/annualDecimal.html
Interestingly over that time average inflation has been 4,5%.
Put it another way $1 put away in 1976 will buy you about 16c worth of stuff today
Now quite a few people expect to retire at 60 and live to 100 – I wish them luck with their super 🙂
Would have thought more. Much of it ended up in the Philippines as I understand it.
You are probably right Jack.
In 1975, average full time earnings was $7600 – in 2015 $72,000 – a factor of 9.
Which just goes to prove that never ever link a pension to the CPI because you will fall rapidly behind.

The median income in Australia is just over $50K. That is the most accurate measure.
It’s more than $60k. We just had a census for God’s sake.
This comes direct from the ABS Quick stats page. I am assuming this is after tax.
“The median weekly personal income for people aged 15 years and over in Australia was $662”
This comes from the ABS “Household Income and Wealth, Australia, 2015-16” “Median weekly equivalised disposable household income” 2013/14 $870. 2015/16 $853. I am still looking for the article I read this week showing $54K is the median weekly income.
That’s not average earnings. Check the ABS. It’s all there.
This is showing an Average weekly wage of $1191.50 per week. I believe that is pre tax. So just over $60K a year. Either way the average wage is not the over $80K or even $70K as many including government members claim it to be. apologies for the numerous examples just wanted to show I was not just picking numbers out of the air willy nilly.
https://tradingeconomics.com/australia/wages
You got thgere in the end. Go to the ABS. It’s much easier. You said $50k initially. 20 per cent off.
Frustration is thy friend JTI…..
Discussions that quote a median (mid point) wage or an average (mean) wage are always skewed by the boundary numbers, some zero and some in the billions. A fairer measurement would be the modal wage, the amount most people earn, pre-tax. This would be lower than either the mean or the median, and would present a clearer picture of remuneration across the board for all Australians. The data would be the gross figure, not a number after the accountants got at them. A modal graph would be really revealing, but no Government wants one.
Yes. I was not clear in my attempt to show the $72K JS commented on is not a true reflection neither is the $80K odd the government continue to claim it is.
Jeez JS I better rush out and spend today while it’s still worth something today 😉
What a lot of people will do if they keep fiddling with super Boa.
The lengths that people go to to stay on a part pension are quite extensive.
That’s what I have maintained all along during these tweaks JS.
It seems they find it the easiest source of more funding for the deficit – with the least resistance – because retirees do not have the option of going back to work to recover the losses.
All it will do is get more retirees to say ”oh, bugger it, why am I trying to stay off the govt pension – there’s no point” and off they go on to the part pension. One cannot really blame them. And it’s going to land up costing the govt heaps.
From WA this is great. What a pity the Australian Federal coalition government will not support such “agile and innovative” Australian Companies and would rather support the unreliable tax dodging fossil fuel industry..

“and rising temperatures that are making ageing coal plants less reliable”” Maximum temperatures were the second-warmest on record at 1.27°C above average, coming in behind +1.45°C in 2013. But the 2013 temperatures could now be the average going forward.”
“The Australian Energy Market Operator is calling for broad changes to Australia’s energy market rules, saying they are not keeping up with the shift to wind and solar, battery storage, and rising temperatures that are making ageing coal plants less reliable”

“These claims are deeply misleading. Taxable income ignores the largest source of income for many wealthier retirees: tax-free superannuation.” Hillsong morrison caught out lying again. No surprises.

And so it starts and they were going so well for so many years. You voted for it NZ now you can deal with the consequences. Opportunities for Australia if we are quick enough!

It will be interesting to watch from afar Razor.
Can’t get the link as usual mate but what a woman!
NZ stepping it up for the environment whilst Australia, led by troglodytes, rips it to shreds. Which of course is the Fibs MO.
The difference to the environment will be three-fifths of you know what. The difference to the Taranaki will be a major slap in the guts.
Here we go. Ardern’s non-understanding of one of the most vital regions in NZ:

Just a minor detail, Mr Insider, I note right at the start of the “conversation Richard refers to you as “Jack” Hoysted but in fact your name is “Peter”. Just a slip of the tongue maybe? I know of your wonderful Family through Horse Racing circles and the Champion “Manikato”. Cheers
Labor had Mediscare. Have the Lbs got grannyscare?
https://www.theaustralian.com.au/national-affairs/treasury/chris-bowen-accuses-malcolm-turnbull-of-dishonesty-over-imputations/news-story/1c1b0566770ade339499ecdc44b77df8
Depends which way one looks at it – could also be construed as Labor’s grannyscare!
Hope the “grannies” don’t read some of the inaccuracies on here that pose as informed comment. They’d really be scared out of their wits Boa.😉
Wits Carl? More like knickers. Well maybe bloomers, no that’s ageist, try G-strings. Not easy to scare a granny out of them, you know fat fingers, fumbling and all.
I’ve noticed there’s a chap on here who claims to have “fat fingers” when he stuffs up a comment, Lou.
No names, no pack drill and all that.😉
Ew, Lou. The mind boggles …….
