IF you’re like me, you’re sick to death of the Barnaby Joyce story already and it has only been out there for little more than a day.
And oh, how the Op-Eds rolled out, like a torrent spewed out by the terabyte.
What we might kindly call the new media babbled on about conspiracies between the press gallery and the parliament. Democracy denied was the collective shriek, as if the readers of these inner-city websites were exclusively the denizens of New England.
Joyce won New England with a 7 per cent swing and if an election was held in his seat tomorrow my best guess is he would win by a similar margin.
Even during the campaign Twitter knew. I knew and I didn’t care. Indeed, during the New England by-election campaign, mainstream media reported Joyce was no longer living at the family home. Any journalist worth his or her salt could have chased the story down.
Full column here.
Wonder what Barnaby will get for Valentine’s Day, could be the booby prize, don’t come Monday.
I get the impression from over the wall that the worm is turning – the press are getting into the gutter and some are starting to feel sorry for Barnaby – and Ms Campion, and the family.
Time to allow the LNP to sort it out, put Julie in as deputy in Mal’s absence, and get back to business as usual.
While they are counting up days spent in Canberra on non-sitting days, could we have the lists for all MP’s from country areas please – perhaps for the past 3 years or so?
I am not being a shallow hypocrite, (not in my book anyway – this blog is a broadchurch we are told I’m )just interested in what that would throw up……
This blog has never been a “broadchurch” you could only have heard that line at your Liberal party whinge fests. The blog has always been likened to a front bar. You obviously missed the parts of the articles that stated rorting Barnaby exceeded all other MPs by double the amount of days the next highest being Hillsong the treasurer for the real estate industry. He has rorted. The longer he stays the more Australians realise just how corrupt and self serving you cons are. No surprises.
Penny reckons it’s a broadchurch. I thought she was a friend of yours? Careful, Don’t let the side down .
Can you get any sillier…no thought not
Your friend Penny’s description, not mine!
Over the wall is not a terribly good indicator of public feeling. Try looking at other newspapers and Twitter. No turned worm there.
As for country MPs, Barnaby is the member for New England, a mere 2 and a half hours drive away. Nigel Scullion spent less nights in Canberra and he’s a 6 hour flight away. Julie Bishop claimed for less nights and you would be well aware she’s from WA. Both of these people hold Ministerial portfolios. What’s your next question.
Same question. Can we see the lists of all MP’s. Not just cabinet members. Over 3 years.
Yvonne over the wall is a right wing echo chamber. Facts do not see the light of day. That is why YvonneTas fits in over there. That s why my comments don’t get posted over there. No surprises.
Probably don’t get posted because it’s just crap and abuse.
Barnaby Joyce should realize that the honourable way to go is to resign from politics. Barnaby who held the high moral ground has done exactly the opposite. The personal mess that has been created probably needs his personal attention and will not have time to attend to the nations needs. Surely, Barnaby has seen how his name, his actions have been discussed on the media relentlessly. If he does not go there will be greater pain for him, his family, his partner and indeed, the government.
Looters are not honourable. Recall what they did to our 1st female PM. Those who write history books will tell the true story.
and what she did to Rudd? and it wasn’t the looters that shafted her in the end, it was shorten and his ilk and Rudd, Bassman – you can’t be that biased?! and yes, the lefties write the history books. and doesn’t Keating want them written in a way in which he was running the country, in contrast to the fact that he was Hawke’s batman. Jack in HK is on the money when he says that Hawke was the best pm, in his and it includes my lifetime (thus far!). His govt was my first vote in the box and the talent of his cabinet, and his management of them, seems unlikely to be repeated.
Honour is a rare thing in politics, bassman shared amongst the lot.
And when you say looters mate I think of the unions ripping of the lowest paid to increase their coffers or to spend it on prostitutes, travel etc and so on and so on…
Gillard did everything to herself Bassy.
GULP!
Overhead at gurlz singles bar 6 months ago.
“O Vee, you’re not drinking. You must be pregnant, congratulations! Who’s the father?”
Eavesdropping again HU?
Over the last couple of days, some friends and I drove to the Gold Coast from Canberra, stopping overnight in Armidale along the way.
Do you think that any of the places we stopped at to eat along the way deep in Barnaby territory offered any dishes to honour the man? They did not. Not a beetroot in sight, or anything resembling Barnaby on toast! Even the avocado on toast I ordered didn’t come smashed, which surely must represent the state he’s in now.
Anyway, now that we’re in Broadbeach, we’re not quite sure what we’ve let ourselves in for, as the temperature’s going to be around 35 degrees with around 90% humidity. At least it’s dry in Canberra.
Armidale was such a DEAD place when I was at uni there all of the eateries were closed by 9pm. You had to drive to Tamworth to get a hamburger which many of us did. I loved the Unisex toilets though! Wonder if they are still like dat.
Did a spot of lurking did we Bassy?
Armidale’s a lovely place, Bassy. An ex of mine grew up in Armidale and I used to love visiting there. I visited my ex’s mother yesterday and I’m pretty sure the toilets at her place are unisex.
Oh dnt get me wrong it IS a lovely place. I always stop there when we go camping. Love the place. Great people as well
It’s February mate!! Anywho, get in the water and then get some ice cold frothy XXXX’s into ya.
I did have a swim this morning and the surf was OK. Going heavy on the XXXXs in the morning mightn’t have been conducive to doing well at what I came to the Gold Coast for, though – and it’s not what you’re thinking of!!
I wasn’t feeling real dry running around the Lake on Monday TO.
Oh come on man. We all know you are NOT capable of running out of site on a dark night. No surprises.
You’ve done well to run around the Lake, Razor. These days, it almost kills me to ride around it.
Which lake Razor? Burley Griffin? Eucumbene? Eyre? Baikal? Brian? Dawn?
Jacqui Lambie Network under the pump here. Support declining fast. She is also running out of money to support an election campaign here. Is appealing for new members – but has declared that all donations received from Tasmania will be diverted to her campaign for the senate. Goodness me.
Jacqui Lambie would be a huge loss for Tasmania and especially for those veterans she has relentlessly fought for.
Australia gets stuck with the likes of Hanson whilst a woman with true values gets shafted. JL’s a real fighter & I respect her.
Yes she is,Bella.
I was quite surprised to read that the party was struggling to stay afloat tbh. I thought they were on a roll.
She was really annoyed when her replacement didn’t offer up his senate seat for her. I don’t think she handled that too well publicly.
She should decide which way she is going. Imho she should have focussed her efforts on getting a couple of seats in the state election here rather than spit the dummy over the senate thing. If I’d donated to her party for the Tasmanian election i would be a bit peeved
Time will tell. She seems convinced she will get back into the senate at the next election.
I am rooting for Jacqui, Boadicea, as you well know I find her good value and cant wait till she has a top spot in our Parliament, Senate or HORPS. Cheers
Calm down Henry. Haven’t you seen the amount of bother that Barney’s in already? (But I do recall that she likes a good package)
Maybe Barnaby was, too?
I hope she appreciates it Henry. Who are you rooting for Jacqui BTW?
Jack, you may be right, Barnaby could soon be toast. Do they usually wait til a Friday afternoon, or is 2 days of QT too much?
Well, the PM could sack him as a minister but won’t and the Nats’ caucus could tip him out as leader but apparently won’t. I do notice The West Australian is running with another expense rort claim but at this point in time he may well survive and that is the worst outcome for the government.
I hope he stays there. Imagine an election campaign with both T.Bull AND the Bonking Beetroot to throw mud at. If BJ stays on he could cost the Looters 2 percentage points at an election especially if FOI stuff gets leaked.
Bet you do BASSY. You’ve still got a list of unused cheap shots to chuck, eh.
item 1: “People now marvel how it came to pass that he should have been selected as the representative man of any party. His . . . efforts, imbecile in matter, disgusting in manner, have made us the laughing stock of the whole world.”
Item 2: “A tragedy for the American republic, a tragedy for the Constitution, and a triumph for the forces, at home and abroad, of nativism, authoritarianism, misogyny, and racism.”
Item 3: “He is evidently a person of very inferior cast of character, wholly unequal to the crisis.”
Item 4: “Heartfelt keening of shame and revulsion was heard throughout the land.”
You reading the NYTimes?
All paraphrased from David Remninck in The New Yorker, Nov 9, 2016. Item 1 refers to President Lincoln, Item 2 refers to President Trump, Item 3 also refers to President Lincoln and is a quote from an Ed Everett oration, Item 4 also refers to Lincoln is quoted from the Huffington Post series of articles “Annals of Resistance”. All items appeared this week in ‘New American Digest’ and other publications, written by Roger Kimball who writes and edits online conservative newsletter ‘American Greatness’. Kimball refers to the anti Trump movement as New Secessionists. I’ve read some of Kimball, and Remninck, before and find them intellectual lightweights. Neither exhibit a sturdy grasp of history.
Edward Everett was the waffler who spoke for two hours before Lincoln delivered the 2 minute Gettysburg Address.
Heh heh. Mencken maybe? Or maybe Mencken. Item 1 sorted.

I didn’t look into the origins, just the most recent incarnations. I first encountered the same four points in Remninck 11/9 but they could all well be of Civil War vintage, or even older.
no, sent to me, with the tag, one is about Trump, which i forgot to add.
Niki gives Barney a year. I give him about a week. He has to step down when not only the Liberals are after him but (wait for it!) Rupert is as well. When Rupert puts the word out that is most definitely finito.
Barney denies drunkenly pinching a woman on the bum, as has been reported. “I was stone cold sober” he claims.
Did we miss a Blog on “Ideology”, Mr Insider, this one getting huge. Cheers
