Humble servant of the Nation

Death becomes our politicians.

A big shout out to Dennis Hof who overcame the severe handicap of being dead to win election in District 36 of the Nevada State Assembly.

District 36 sits inside Nye County, Nevada. The county’s principal city, Pahrump, is a solid hour’s drive east to Las Vegas. It is home to 36,000 Nevadans, wedged on the Nevada-California border and ominously and perhaps auspiciously, Death Valley lies nearby. Pahrump became noteworthy (at least to me) as a part-setting and general den of inequity for the television drama, Get Shorty.

Hof enjoyed his 72nd birthday celebrations three weeks ago in Pahrump in the company of porn star Ron Jeremy, and recently pardoned former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and died the following day.

Death became Dead Dennis. He not only won but won in a landslide. The obvious conclusion is the Democrat candidate, Lesia Romanov, may not have been entirely compelling. But here’s the rub — Hof, in a state of the deepest repose, was seen as a better candidate dead than alive.

The denizens of District 36 were not altogether comfortable casting a vote for a man who owned seven legal brothels.

But dead he was just fine, and the punters came out and voted for him in droves. Dead Dennis received 68 per cent of the vote. Had Still Vaguely in the Vertical Dennis run, it may have gone down to the wire.

What’s next? A dead Abe Lincoln to emerge from his tomb in Springfield Illinois? Dead Thomas Jefferson and dead George Washington to battle it out in Virginia’s sixth district for another shot at the title?

Worse things could happen.

I liken the anti-climate science crowd to anti-vaxxers, as both reject the weight-of-evidence conclusions of the professionals (i.e. the IPCC /most medical researchers), instead being swayed by fringe groups with questionable credentials. It’s telling that the loudest anti-climate voices in Australia, e.g., Maurice Newman, Tony Abbott, Ian Plimer, Jennifer Marohasy, Joanne Nova etc. aren’t atmospheric scientists. I wonder if the deniers would seek advice from a plumber for a migraine.

Newman’s rants about climate change being a fig leaf for a global wealth redistribution scheme are particularly risible.

    Sad.

    • Razor says:

Interesting comment TO and in fact made more interesting by the fact you use the IPCC as an example. You do realise Gore recently said the IPCC had to and I quote ‘torque up’ their report for leaders to get attention. Is torquing up very scientific TO? Does the hockey stick graph, University of East Anglia and the homogenisation of temperature data mean anything to you. There are a number of climate scientists who do not agree with the conclusions. Why should we not use and export our cleaner coal to ensure we have the economy behind us to adapt if it is all true? Our emissions are bugger all. This is a religion for some people including all on the left. There’s nothing more dangerous than a zealot with a firm religous belief!

      • Bella says:

“a number of climate scientists who do not agree”
Yeah mate that’s currently standing at 3% so “bugger all”. Btw the term ‘clean coal’ is a Resources Council lie used often in their futile scramble to convince millions of environmentally minded citizens to back new mines like Adani who’s free 60 year water license to wash that filfty coal will terminally impact the GAB, it’s wildlife and agricultural lands. That’s what is really dangerous & further, let’s just gnore those brown paper bags (new style democracy) being transferred amongst our pollies & give Gina all that she demands of her puppets.

I agree with your last sentence though but here was I thinking you liked ScuMo Razor? 🤐

    • Lou oTOD says:

The Greens have announced a policy that will make anyone associated with the production or use of coal guilty of a criminal offence with gaol terms inflicted, effective 2030.

We have entered cronic lunacy Razor.

      • Jean Baptiste says:

Wot! Just gaol terms! No floggings and tar and featherings! What a bunch of half hearts the Greens are.

      • Trivalve says:

        It’ll never catch on

      • Milton says:

They is a funny mob the Greens, Lou. Pro-abortion and pro-euthanasia. Get ‘ém early or get ’em late. For those inbetweenies, weaken them with no meat and appease them with needle exchanges, weed and pill testing. Dude, we all know the economy is for privileged, white male elite’s, or for those who can afford organic kale slushies. Do they promote nuclear? Nah. And they’re selective about one sort of hydro over the other. The sooner they return to mother nature the better. Compost the Greens!

    • Bella says:

Can’t get your link mate, but I do know it’s opinion, not facts, because it’s the Oz FGS.
I’d like to see Kenny, and any new coal mine supporters for that matter, explain to future generations that coal was good for the economy when they won’t be able to farm the land, breathe the air or drink the water.
Thinking outside the coal square is doing our best for them.

    • Trivalve says:

Chris Kenny. Facts. Coal. Big hmmm. Let me read this and get back to you.

  • Henry Donald J Blofeld says:

Go hard Boris, snatch the Leadership big boy, your time has come!
    Thanks for coming Theresa.

    • Jean Baptiste says:

And what is that buffoon Boris going to do Henry? He has a delusional Churchill complex. Brexit will become either a Dunkirk or Dieppe.

    • Henry Donald J Blofeld says:

Top story there linked Mr. Baptiste very thought provoking. Cheers

    • Carl on the Coast says:

Settle down now JB and take a few deep breaths. Just about everyone knows that a study of Greenland’s cosmogenic nuclides clearly show the country was deglaciated for extended periods yonks ago.

The country is now beginning to get its land back. Its a time for rejoicing, not wallowing in doom and gloom, as you are wont to do me old mate.

And its all over an itsy-bitsy lump of ice?!

      • Jean Baptiste says:

If your brains were dynamite you wouldn’t have enough to blow the wax out of your ears.
We are seeing a loss of ice in just decades that would have taken thousands of years when such cycles happened “yonks ago.”

And “doom and gloom ” my trim and taut freckle! I have never been so upbeat in my life, fascinated and enthralled to be present and observe the end days of a species that stupidly imagines itself to be the most intelligent in the known universe. As Carlin would say, a front seat, sit back and enjoy the show.

I am forever in your debt Carl for being a great influence in me being able to finally give up on the human race. I am now unencumbered by hope or any obligation and fully realise with guides like you there never was any way or hope. It’s so , so, bloody liberating!

    • Bella says:

Such an interesting link JB particularly the biology of Cryoconite sediment which may give researchers further understanding of what’s happening to our ecosystems from AGW.

Gaia is coming for the vandals Bella. It’s almost like life at the cellular level has resolved to get the hooligans off the streets.

  • Razor says:

    JB,
Listen here old bean. Your recent, less than eloquent, use of the English language has pervaded this blog! Infected it in fact! Like a canker on the rigid pole of truth! Our host, in his most recent offering, has essentially just labelled the whole loony left a bunch of green can’t”s!

  • Boadicea says:

Gosh, Jack – you certainly brought the extreme right out with your thoughts on the Greens! I wondered if that was the purpose? Friday joke?
Don’t say nasty things about Bob! He’s a nice person – passionate about his beliefs. And unwavering – which sets him above the rest of the pack.

    • Dwight says:

But, he let the Eastern Bloc into the party–which made them dangerous.

      • Jack The Insider says:

Bit of a stretch, mate. The Greens are state based and the states suit themselves. Bob railed against the influence of Rhiannon but there was little he could do about her. The Tas Greens under him were a genuine environmental party.

    • Carl on the Coast says:

So, The Guardian has overcome a perilous financial situation thanks to the support of its 89,000 readers who have just learnt that a 20 tonne meteorite traveling at 12 miles per second, 12,000 years ago made a dent in Greenland 19.3 miles wide. The Guardian also muses over the $64,000 question for scientists as to when exactly did it happen.

      The mind boggles.
