Barnaby Joyce, Malcolm Turnbull split in spectacular style

Let me take you back. Way, way back to the evening of December 2, 2017. The Prime Minister and his deputy stood arm in arm at the West Tamworth Leagues Club. Joyce had just won the New England by-election by a thumping margin and Turnbull declared he was “putting the band back together.”

Ah, good times.

Alas, rock stars and politicians are, if nothing else, a difficult and unpredictable lot. Velvet Underground reformed and got halfway through a European tour in 1992 before the band’s two enormous egos, Lou Reed and John Cale, remembered why the band had split up in the first place. The two men hated the sight, let alone the creeping presence, of one another. The tour and the reunion ended abruptly, and Reed and Cale went their separate ways.

The Turnbull-Joyce combo did not come to grief because of crippling personality conflict. although it may do so at some time in the near future. But back then the band had only broken up when Joyce discovered his unfortunate New Zealand-news. We subsequently learned the High Court did not so hold and Joyce was off to a by-election that on the parliamentary numbers at least, threatened the Turnbull government’s majority.

Heres a cruising story that probably didn’t get much press up north. They keep the bad ones under wraps.
Ovation of the Seas was in a couple of months ago. 4,500 passengers, 1,500 crew. They had to deepen the harbour here to accomodate this montrous thing.
There were 300 passengers quarantined with gastro on board and 2 passengers were offloaded in body bags. No kidding.
Locals could forget about needing emergency care that day. The whole dept was taken up sorting out the gastro sufferers.
I was left wondering if the public conveniences around Hobart wharf areas had been sanitised when they left !☹

FRYDENBERG onn Q and A…..never felt so sorry for a bloke …..Chris Bowen wiped the floor with him on every issue. Young Josh spent yonks explaining how giving $65billion to the big end of town would result in higher wages. An astute panelist asked young Josh to give one concrete example where this has happened anywhere in the world. Of course he couldnt….when Reagan and Bush showered their rich mates with tax cuts the joint went into recession and massive debt. As I have said previously the Wal Mart example is a beauty.Yep they got a pay rise of $1.50 a week……how did they pay for it? Not with tax cuts but by sacking a few thousand workers. Then a businessman phoned in on 2GBiased…..whe he was asked Iif he would pass on tax cuts he said “Well I am not obligated to”.And that is the crux of the matterIt will be trousered. It would be better economics if the tax cuts were given to the workers who spend most of their dispoable income. As they buy goods the effects would trickle up to big business….get it? Hee hee!

I am with Dutts on exporting the NZ one punch guy but I am totally against his ‘character ‘ test which virtually mean if he doesnt like you he can cancel your visa. OK he has deported thousands….now I would like to see some of those who have been deported for minor infractions e.g. parking fines as I have read.It smells too much like neg driving which in reality means a cop can book you for anything Bald.

    • Razor says:

      Bassy,
The character test is quite detailed. Further nobody and I mean nobody has been deported over any traffic or minor criminal matters.

      • BASSMAN says:

I read a couple of years ago NZealanders were in detention for traffic offences and parking fines.
Failing a ‘character test’ is a very VERY vague ruling…vague enough to be easily abused and on Dutt’s past record of blatant lies and deception well within his repertoire of nasties. As I said…let us see a list of all those deported and detained on ‘character’…let us see some examples of what defines as ‘bad character’. As I have said I am all for Dutts weeding out villains and deporting them

On the subject of cruises, my advice is to stay well away from the sea. We had a truly wonderful cruise five years ago, five days on the Peruvian Amazon in what was really a small floating boutique hotel, with outings in tinnies to remote backwaters etc. But there was one major risk – the company. Fortunately, we got on like a house on fire with the others on board, particularly an American Jewish couple, which is just as well, because there was no escape, unless you stayed in your cabin – well more of a glass walled stateroom really. However, we happened to disembark at the home port of Nauta, upstream from Iquitos, at the same time as the sister ship. You could see immediately that they hated each other with a vengeance. Their cruise had been a disaster, but ours was fantastic.

The small vessels on the adventure type cruise would be fun – because all on board would be like-minded. Sounds like a great trip NFY!

The Black Eyed Peas singer, Fergie, provides a unique take on the US national anthem before the NBA All-Star Game yesterday, Mr Insider. I thought it was a ripper, better than PINK did a few weeks back at the Superbowl imho.

Thanks JB, I’m sure I’ve heard that one before at the Bamboo Buddha; a vegan cafe, gallery, chill out joint, etc. I occasionally drop in for some down time and a feed. A great place to be, about 3 kms from my place.
      Cheers.

      • Jean Baptiste says:

Cheers. I find Kartiki Gaekwad’s “Ganesh” the best “off your arse and into it” mantra for me.
I don’t do “chill out”, life is too short.

        Give ’em heaps.

Totally off topic, but a great speech in a debate by Stephen Fry on the Catholic church.

If I had a dollar for every time someone has had a wardrobe malfunction in the last year then I too could consider a cruise.
btw that Norwegian bloke last night deserved a gold for his moustache alone.

  • Dismayed says:

I see big profits announced in reporting season. big dividends, big executive remuneration bonuses but I don’t see any pay rises for normal workers.

    • smoke says:

      coz tax cuts..yeah yeah

    • smoke says:

      coz tax cuts..yeah yeah

    • Milton says:

      No surprises!!

    • Carl on the Coast says:

I’m given to understand that around 80 percent of the “big profits” go back to shareholders, including mum and dad investors, as well as (shock horror !!!) some of the “normal workers” who are all quite prepared to have a go at making a quid from our free enterprise system (such as it is).

But I dare say Dismayed, the old ‘s & d’ equilibrium will be knocked off balance if your mates get their sticky fingers into it.

      • Dismayed says:

cotc. Perhaps you should read Bill Evans article today who is very concerned about the short term stimulus and long term debt these type of tax cuts create he along with many other economists do not support the tax cuts.. You will note the Profit reporting season in in full swing in Australia. Big profits everywhere. Not a wage rise in sight. Stick to your knitting carl.

        • Carl on the Coast says:

Well ….. I dunno Dismayed, it seems the prospects for boosted employment, business investment, spending on training, R & D and technologies are the strongest since 2012. That can’t be a negative, surely. Re wages, perhaps the unions need to pull their finger out? They may have been doing too much knitting, eh.

Putting that aside, your reference to Bill Evans’s concerns does not materially devalue my previous comment.
