Denis Ryan has a win at last

Denis Ryan has had a busy time of it. On the 86-year-old former cop’s call list this morning was the Washington Post, the BBC and a courtesy call from the Victorian Premier, Dan Andrews.

The cop who tried to prosecute one of the most prolific paedophile priests in our history 46 years ago and came off second best received a compensation payment from the Andrews government yesterday. The undisclosed amount is one Ryan is satisfied with.

There have been a few backslappers step forward in the last 24 hours. In a tweet yesterday, senator Derryn Hinch described Ryan as “one of the bravest, moral men I have ever known.” Hinch might know of Ryan but he’s never met him.

Welcome back mate. An APM for Dinny Ryan would be my choice as well.

  • The Bow-Legged Swantoon says:

Welcome back, mate. A grand note on which to return!

  • Bella says:

Wonderful to have you back JTI.
I sincerely hope you’re feeling stronger now.

When I first heard the news about the much deserved settlement for Mr. Ryan I was in a very public place but couldn’t help myself from a quiet ‘yoohoo’ on his behalf! It’s wonderful that the Vic government stepped up & that you never ever dropped the ball on this shameful story on his behalf.
Bravo Denis Ryan, a decent man with the heart of a giant.

  • Penny says:

Great to see you back JTI. Great win for Dinny and you also. It took a lot of determination to get this story told. I just hope some of the victims of this sorry tale could get justice and closure, but I can’t see how.
Tremendous win for Tun Dr Mahathir and the Coalition of opposition parties in Malaysia, they’ve declared Thursday, Friday public holidays so (as the rumours go ) no money can be transferred out and government offices can’t be emptied of incrimating documentation. The Agong (King) is taking his time getting back to the palace to swear in a new PM as I think no-one was prepared for this victory. I’m sorry we’re not there at the moment to celebrate with our friends, but on the other hand it’s their victory and they should be congratulating themselves and their fellow Malaysians for holding steady and voting against one very corrupt government.

    • Jack The Insider says:

Thanks, Penny. Big news from Malaysia. God, Mahathir again and at 92. The mind boggles.

    • Wissendorf says:

LOL. I was on the road and typing on my ancient but reliable flip phone. Trying to type a proper post on the tiny screen with the tiny keys is a chore beyond my patience. Back home now.

    • Wissendorf. says:

Now Anwar Ibrahim is to be released and pardoned, making him eligible for Parliament again. Mahatir’s plan is apparently to have Anwar elevated to the top job, so he can retire again. You couldn’t make this stuff up.

      • Penny says:

No you couldn’t Wiss, but it really is such an incredible outcome. Good old Dr. M, he has pulled off the unthinkable and he has now instructed the Immigration Deprtment that Najib and the lovely Rosmah can’t leave the country. It just keeps getting better and better.

        • Wissendorf. says:

As I understand it, Mahatir has won leading the Opposition that couldn’t topple him for decades. Not too much recalcitrant about that! I bet Razak is eyeing off some disguises and looking for a minibus to Sadao.

          • Penny says:

Ha, ha Wiss, they have been very wise in putting a police guard outside their mansion…..don’t think they’ll be going anywhere. I’m getting daily updates from friends, it’s just astounding what that 92 year old has achieved in 5 days….and yet more to come

  • Tracy says:

All credit to you for taking Denis’s story and putting it out there, I wish Denis all the best and welcome back🎉

  • Wissendorf. says:

  • Lou oTOD says:

Great to see you back Jack, I trust you are feeling ok. This is a fantastic victory for Denis Ryan, even if a little pyrrhic given his age and what he has gone through to get this far. It was more than interesting to read of his conversation with Rupert Hamer, talk about fighting city hall.

I am sure Ryan is as proud of you as you are of him.

Best wishes for a healthy rewarding future, it hasnt been the same without you tapping the keyboard.

    Cheers.

  • Henry Blofeld says:

Welcome back Mr Insider, what a delight to see you fired up again, take it easy and make sure you get your health back to top form, our wealth is our health. Denis Ryan deserves all the accolades and money he gets imho. Sadly a bit late in his life but at least he knows he was right to do as he did. A few things happened whilst you were in Hospital, Turnbull now 31 Negative Newspolls and rising, hes still talking away but no one listening. POTUS Trump looks like he will meet Kimmie very soon and Trump may get the Nobel Peace Prize too. Wonder what Mr Baptiste thinks of that! Four MP’s and one Senator gone via the dual citizenship fiasco, shameful of them not to have checked this before taking the Queens “Shilling.”. A Royal Wedding only a week away and palyboy Harry ties the know. So as you can see you haven’t missed much. Cheers and continue getting back to good health

    • Henry Blofeld says:

P.S. forgot to add we see Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North to be the new President of the NRA. Way to go Ollie you magnificent bastard!

  • JackSprat says:

Good to see you back Jack.

10/10 for your perseverance on this subject. Ever since reading your book, I have followed this rather sad episode in Australian history with a degree of anger and disgust.

The complete story will never go away for the victims and is inching towards a conclusion for the Catholic Church with Pell’s trial. After that compensation for the victims?

One of the unsung heroes in all of this is Julia Gilliard – I often wonder if there would have been a Royal Commission without her standing firm on having it and its scope.

    • Razor says:

Agree JS, for all her faults she did well on this. Mind you a cynic might suggest it was to take the focus away from other things.

  • Dismayed says:

Great to have you back Jack. Thank you Mr Ryan.
