Aung San Suu Kyi in good company with appalling Nobel prize winners

Forget the lotteries or a long shot quadrella. The easiest way to make a million dollars and earn the respect of your peers to boot is to win a Nobel Peace Prize.

The rules are invariably flexible. A winner has to do something ‘good’ within fairly broad confines of what good is but then can do a lot of stuff that is extremely bad. Or you can do many bad things early on and then do a little bit of good and next thing you know you’re standing on the stage at the Stockholm Concert Hall, smiling for the cameras with the presentation cheque in hand.

The 26th President of the United States, Teddy Roosevelt was a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Before becoming president, the redoubtable Teddy was both Secretary of the Navy and the leader of the Rough Riders, a US volunteer cavalry outfit that saw action in the Cuban theatre of the Spanish-American War of 1898.

Teddy frequently charged ahead of his men and blasted away at anything that moved. He wrote a rather chilling piece of reportage where he spoke of his euphoria after killing his first man at the Battle of San Juan. Even his admirers, of which I am one, would acknowledge Teddy liked war a little bit too much.

Thank god Stalin didn’t get a Nobel Peace Prize, Mr Insider, despite the massive human war sacrifices of the Russian people in WW2. Stalin murdered more of his own people than were killed in the war.

Apologies for straying off topic here – but re the previous blog – I just can’t escape the uneasy feeling that Australia is rushing headlong into poorly thought out, or not thought through at all, renewable energy ideas – and moving from pillar to post depending on who the government or opposition is trying to appease. Or to win votes. Getting nowhere, or worse, a complete catastrophe somewhere down the line.
It would have been more reassuring if we had sat back, thought it through, researched options, and had bipartisan state and federal cooperation on the issue – for the common good of our very survival. But no.
…….And more importantly perhaps, kept existing power resources going whilst alternative measures were properly instigated. Having third world type blackouts is ridiculous. Australia has every resource needed to generate power. Sunshine, coal, abundant water in some areas – and uranium. We shouldn’t be in this situation.
This is where the federal system must make us look like nutcases in the eyes of the world. In one country we have states opposing views coming up against each other. What a shambles
Ah well I got that off my chest!
    Bonjour to all!

    Laurie Oakes on todays politicians

“But the PM’s current problem, in my view, is that he isn’t very good at politics and never has been. He lacks the skills. Political skills, I think, have been in short supply in the post-Howard era and in all parties. The recent generation of pollies could do well with a how-to lecture from Paul Keating.”

this is spot on, as you would expect from Oakes.

  • Boadicea says:

She has certainly surprised me. But then again, supreme power changes leaders – and not for the better. Plenty of examples of that around these days.

  • Carl on the Coast says:

There’s nothing noble about a peace prize nowadays.

Geezz Swans in all sorts of bother.

    • Jack The Insider says:

They had a shocker and I’d expect a few will not be in the red and white next year. Cats were very good. Surprised me.

      • jack says:

mate, they had a shocker, but sport is sport, that happens.

lomgmire got it right during the week when he said that the big mistake in finals is to follow the first weeks form and dismiss the chances of a top four team because they were beaten first week.

Razor says: September 15, 2017 at 1:54 pm .Off topic apologies but from the last one . Wind power falls to Zero subsidy levels in Europe.. Razor. You are differentially stuck in the mud and in time you will have to remove your feet from your boots to be able to walk into this century. You are wrong on many points regarding energy. We will not get Nuclear in Aussie because no one will want it near them so the best Coastal areas are off the table so Water becomes the issue. It wont happen. You should probably read futher afield than the Australian opinion pieces for your information on energy or ask someone who works in it? I have tickets if you want some.

Finished a project offshore Myanmar last year before returning to work in Aussie.. It was clear it was merely regime change. Aung San Suu Kyi had been waiting half her life to avenge her fathers disposal. The country has resources which are now being explored and produced. Offshore Rakhine state is where a couple of good producing wells are already earning $$$$$.

Good read, Mr Insider. If Yasser Arafat could win a Nobel Peace Prize anybody can!

  • Tracy says:

I usually try to turn a blind eye to comments over the wall and not comment but the ignorance of some is amazing, don’t know how you have the patience Jack.
Has anybody noticed where the UN Secretary Gen is these days?

    • Jack The Insider says:

Quite amazing how many apologists for ethnic cleansing there are, Tracy. Unapologetic about it, too. Surprised me.

    • Henry Blofeld says:

Some shockers Tracy a different world there at times. Cheers

    • Penny says:

Tracy and JTI, I suppose I should be used to stuff I read over the wall, but seriously how do some people live with themselves.

Aung San Sue Kyi is a fraud, always has been. I remember when her husband was dying from cancer and she wouldn’t go back to the UK for fear of not being able to re-enter the country. She and the military have had a cosy relationship for years. This is a prime example of once again clashes in ideology, people are quick to use the Buddhist term ‘karma” thinking that the religion is all about peace…it isn’t, it’s just like all other religions, a load of garbage.
