I have been perusing the pages of The New York Times so you don’t have to.
With great sound and fury, the NYT recently opened up an office in this Wide Brown Land and the results have been odd, to say the least.
It’s hard to know who the Australian articles are written for. Are they for Americans to glean a greater understanding of a land so far away they couldn’t care less about it, or are they written for the meagre number of Australian subscribers who signed up during the US presidential election, only to forget to unsubscribe after all the votes were counted?
Either way, the Times fails miserably.
Full column here.
Thoughtful piece with the optimistic view that there only so much traction for the far right here.

I’ll get a copy of NYT in the morning and see if its in print too and let you know. Listening to Swans /Demons through AFL.com. I tipped the D’s. They’ve been pushing their credentials this year and are giving the Swans a towelling by the sound of it. 11 behinds in a quarter of footy is the stuff coaches nightmares are made of. I’m keeping faith with the Blues and ticked them to do Adelaide.
Very thoughtful of you JTI…and generous…so we don’t have to be. haha
NYT sounds pretty underwhelming, even juvenile.
Of course racism exists here but your “don the white manchester & set fire to crosses” line had me LOL.
Cheers, Bella
I reckon the NYT was a good read during the US elections.
It’s hard to see that there’d be a lot of interest in it in Australia, though.
Re Donald Trump, boy there are a lot of rabid posters over the wall who think that Mika Brezinski, the object of Donald Trump’s latest abuse, had that sort of grubby, typically Trump, response coming to her.
The general level of discourse on the other side of the wall from Trump and Tony Abbott supporters is deplorable.
i haven’t seen much of the Australian coverage, but I do enjoy the NYT coverage of areas of the US other than the big liberal cities.
The journos sound like anthropologists hacking their way through the impenetrable jungle and encountering a previously unknown tribe of cannibals.
The Times staff appear unaware of anything west of Newark. They see Wisconsin as an alien landscape; they’ll have no clue about Wagga Wagga.
Wisconsin – not that far from Fargo really is it Dwight? Can you blame them?
Hey, hey! That’s my home you’re talking about. And we have all of Minnesota between us and North Dakota.
Jack/Peter,
I would like to know how you’re health is PLUS I have an idea I want to put to you. I sent you a message on LinkedIn but if you’re like me you’ll never get it.
I am a journalist ex ABC,
Cheers,
David
jacktheinsider@gmail.com I’ll keep an eye out for it. Sorry, David. I never look at Linkedin.
A bit short on the Arthur at the moment JTI any chance of forking out for the paper edition on my behalf? Just until I get meself right of course.
The other news “source” is the BBC Web page if they pick up that you are coming in from Australia.
All sorts of strange stories but some are spot on.
Indeed, Mr Insider, I have been reading the “NYT Australia” and am a loss to see just who its aimed at as we Aussies can certainly obtain more relevant up to date info on Australia with our wonderful local media such as your august paper “The Australian”. Still nice to read another viewpoint of what is happening in Australia although doubt strongly if it would have a large following in the US as they do believe in general that the World revolves around their own wonderful Country.
The NYT stock price is up 47% over the last 12 months and subscribers are growing at a solid clip. I use it as a benchmark when making my assessment of the value of the Wall Street Journal in my News Corp shareholding. There is an argument that they have benefited from the “Trump news effect” and that subscribers will drop off once everyone gets bored with Trump, but that doesn’t seem to be happening yet. Even so, the recent results suggest they must be doing something right.
