Humble servant of the Nation

The Corby circus keeps rolling on

Let’s face it, it’s been a tough week. What we need now is an issue that will unify the nation. Happily we have one at hand, Australia’s pathological obsession with Schapelle Corby.

Corby is set to be deported from Indonesia in the coming days. She will be put on a burner and returned to the only place she would regard as worse than Bali’s Kerobokan Prison — Australia.

Ultimately Corby served nine years in Kerobokan and after being released in February 2014 has served a closely watched period of parole in Bali for the last three years.

Back in March 2005 when Corby was first convicted and sentenced, it was akin to the lunar landing, people crowding around televisions watching the verdict, the media going the full three ring circus routine. While some of the hysteria has subsided, it is set to ratchet up again as Corby prepares to set foot in Australia for the first time in almost 14 years.

A bit dated but interesting travel information. According to our guide “Australian Hydro” commands a premium.
“Schwag” sounds interesting. The information contained may not be in strict accordance with travel advice issued by The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

What with the tribe following those two, and the R Wilson reportage, a cynic may be given to wonder if there are too many journos.

  • Jean Baptiste says:

    Good read!
With a top agent someone with such celebrity and attitude should be able to dine out on it for the remainder, with diminishing returns unless the notoriety is spiced up with further escapades or incidents of the type which are of great interest to the discerning public.

Correct with the “niche” market. Worldly dope/Bali/fiend acquaintance informs me that it is Russian Roulette for Western tourists inserting themselves into the supply chain of the local toke. Alleges some crooked cops run dealers, leaping from concealment to arrest or demand a bribe from the collared mark while the supplier scuttles off unmolested. Or the transaction could result in a biffing up a quiet alley with object of removing ones wallet and other transportable chattels.
Same claims there are sophisticated and generally well protected organisations providing for the savvy tourist.
Pure conjecture now, Corby may been just unlucky or connections may have not been doing the right thing.

I recall with some amusement back when she was first arrested she was described as attractive even beautiful. And I thought what strange parallel universe have I strayed into, where that was a standard of beauty…

    • Milton says:

Agree, UQ she’s not my cup of tea but she’s preferable to the horrible Mercedes. Had a look at the Courier Mail and they’re already going ott.
Re the importing of weed to Indo I too thought it odd but from what I’ve heard their gear is not so hot in comparison to our juiced up stuff.
You’d have to have a unique personality to take drugs through customs anywhere.

I can’t see the indecent obsession with Scapelle Corby uniting the nation Jack, I’m guessing about half or more of the public would be happy if she vanished into obscurity and the press won’t let that happen.

Maybe a stint on Dancing With The Stars? A fast Foxtrot might do it, or maybe a Tango.

Barlow and Chambers were still an item a decade after they were necked. I agree if you do the crime then do the time you should be allowed to live in peace. The question will remain, was the time commensurate with the crime? If she had been an Indonesian national, she would almost certainly have been executed, but I don’t think for one minute she will thank her lucky stars.

Stay tuned for some network to dance around the payment to tell her story scenario.

  • JackSprat says:

    Spot on Jack.

Never taken any interest in either of the cases and just put it down to the group think of much of the Australian media.

They have been at it for a century ore more starting with the bush-rangers, got it totally wrong in the Chamberlain case and goodness know how many more.

Just an indication of the facile reporting that we have to endure in this country.

  • BASSMAN says:

I am not a fan of Corbes but up where I live her and her family are well known. That said, I still can’r believe with her knowledge of hooch that she would carry a huge bag of it though Indonesian customs with threatening signs everywhere Bald. I am not looking forward t her making squillions out of her confinement.

I apologise if my comment last blog re Manchester upset people. I said it would but please pay attention to the salient words I used:- “ A world warning” “the warning may be enough” “This is what I would hope” “At the best none” . I always aim for appeasement first.

    • JackSprat says:

      On your comments about Manchester
Appeasement is not working. It is making us look weak and opens the door for further atrocities – sorry terrorist activities
Interesting that we are doing our level best to kill all of ISIS in Syria but if they get back here the scene changes and we wait for them to kill us.
Kind of bizarre when you think about it and it has lots of parallels during other periods in history.

HB – as a follow up from the thread in the last post, another good book is Sinclair McKay’s “The Secret Life of Bletchley Park”, and as usual for a lot of good reads if my memory proves correct, found at the outside $10 specials table at Paperchain in Manuka.

  • Henry Blofeld says:

Excellent summation of the whole sorry Corby affair top to bottom, Mr Insider. I read somewhere this morning the Media has booked her Plane out on her homeward flight. The “circus” as you say is about to arrive and one person in this World I would not like to be is Schapelle Corby. I do wonder though will she make some money out of her story or is that against Australian Law?

  • Milton says:

Just testing because a number of posts of mine didn’t see daylight in the last post. And just a suggestion but it’s probably best not to mention lunar landings.

    • Jack The Insider says:

      Why ever not?

    • Henry Blofeld says:

Dearest Milton, one should remain “open” to dear Mr Baptistes “quaint offerings” re the ’69-’72 Moon Landings however his last offering, the failed Chinese Moon Lander was just a “Barry Crocker” and he needs to up his game in his desperate attempts to disprove same. Cheers.

      • Jean Baptiste says:

The all knowing Blofeld claims the Chinese moon landing was a failure. a Barry Crocker?
Well Blofeld who does not even grasp AGW, what do you make of this endorsement from National Geographic? Is there something you are not telling them Enery?

        • Carl on the Coast says:

The National Geographic also endorsed the ’69 Apollo 11 moon landing.

          • Jean Baptiste says:

So did I at the time.

When new information comes to light, I change my mind according to the facts.
            What do you do?

          • Carl on the Coast says:

I think Albert Einstein said something similar. You an “Einstein man” JB?

I prefer Nietzsche – “There are no facts, only interpretations.”

Then again we may also consider a wide range of options, including our entitlement to our own opinions but not our own facts, and for every fact there is an infinity of hypotheses but ignoring them does not make them go away, especially as in the spider web of facts many a truth is strangled.

There’s a virtual smorgasbord out there me old mate, eh.
