Stop laughing, this is Islam

I know there are a number of Muslim comedians both in Australia and around the world. Good luck to them because if ever a religion needed to poke a bit of fun at itself, Islam is it.

Any Muslim humorist has his or her work cut out. At a scriptural level there are numerous forbidding entries regarding laughter in the Koran and associated texts.

The Hadith says, “Do not laugh too much, for laughing too much deadens the heart.”

Potentially this means any Muslim who uses the laugh out loud acronym is looking at an apostasy charge and in grimmer corners of Islam like Saudi Arabia this has probably already happened.

The Hadith also puts the brakes on satire, too. “Woe to the one who speaks and tells lies in order to make the people laugh; woe to him, woe to him.”

Iran’s mullah, the Shi’ite cleric Ayatollah Khomeini said Islam was a joke free religion. There was not a laugh to be had according to Khomeini. One look at that grizzled visage and you just knew he hadn’t cracked it for a giggle in a very long time, if at all.

I hesitate to be off topic so early but it is a matter of very great importance. I always enjoy your misinterpretations and ponder if they are deliberate or not.
At no point did I posit, as you CLAIM that, the current abrupt rise in temperature was divorced from all other abrupt rises in the past. There have been slow temperature rises in the past and I merely wanted to you to be aware of that, and you will see why.
How strange it is that you seem to think that the proffering this from the link I provided undermines my proposition?

“But there have been several times in the Earth’s past when Earth’s temperature jumped abruptly , in much the same way as they are doing today. Those times were caused by large and rapid greenhouse gas emissions, JUST LIKE HUMANS ARE CAUSING TODAY. ”
Thank you for admonishments anyway, sinners like me bloody well deserve them , right or wrong. I promise not to mention AGW on this blog again.
I wish I could promise to stop lying too, but that wouldn’t feel right.

Oh, here are the those pesky graphs again.

Give ’em heaps. God bless. JB.

I have seen some very funny comedians that are Muslim, but I find that their jokes are more about Middle East culture and it’s idiosyncrasies than about Islam. In my experience in Muslim countries, some are tolerant (Malaysia and Indonesia) others not so much. Some students whilst confessing to me privately that they are atheists would never admit it in public. So much to laugh about in any religion, particularly Islam, don’t do it in any of the Gulf Countries

    Very fine article.

“Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of the heartless world , and the soul of soulless conditions.
It is the opium of the people.” *

JackSprat – I just caught up with your 16/2, 9,47pm response to my comment on your disturbing link in the previous topic re the apparent Islamic process of dispensing “justice” to those who have deemed to have breached the teachings of the Koran.

My comment was not intended to justify past recorded similar behaviours. I think it was a spontaneous reaction born out of empahy and despair.

My apologies if you thought it was a criticism of your post.

    • JackSprat says:

No offense taken – I did think at the time that you were attempting to justify the position. I thought it was strange at the time and am pleased that you were not.

I never take offense at somebody stating an opinion that is contrary to mine.

However, if the reply contains some derogatory remark its game on.

Khawaja looks like being dropped for the first test. Now that is NOT funny. Dropped apparently for a guy who will struggle to play 5 days in a row. Now that is a joke. FN Hohns strikes again. If this is the case why even take him. FFS

So Shaun Marsh retires 104 not out in the lead up match against India A?

The Nine News report tonight described him as a polarising figure. You must have been polarised Dismayed, do you wear dark glasses to bed?

      • Dismayed says:

It matters not. Marsh will break down the moment things look like getting tough in the field. He has been gifted an arm chair ride for years now. It is well past time he actually paid the team and the Nation back by staying on the field a full 5 days. you seem to think 1 score makes a player great. He has only recently got his average up to nearly 40. After 17 years at FC level. Not too great. If he plays he should open in place of Renshaw. Khawaja has actually earned his spot.

    JTI,

The Indonesian law requires every ‘resident’ not just ‘citizen’ to acquire a National Identity Card (KTP). While there is an argument that the ‘Religion’ box can be left blank, in so many cases failing to fill in the box results in no ID card.

The Indonesian Constitution endorses freedom of religion, being one of the six recognised, which reflect the history of Indonesia; Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism.

Until fairly recently, say last 10 years or so Religious activity in Indonesia was relatively tolerant and as in Australia a considerable number of people paid lip-service to their declared allegiance.

But as the voice of the ‘more devout’ Islam has grown, one of the snide comments that has gained currency is ‘ KTP Muslim’ – meaning he just ticked the box, he doesn’t really adhere to the faith’!

So more and more Indonesians wishing to ‘get on’ in the Public Service or Military especially have had to become more openly ‘devout’, within whatever faith they profess. A consequence has been that Australian and other Western residents who fill in the box as ‘Christian’ (because there is no Atheist or Agnostic) can often be asked, in the nicest way of course “.. you a KTP Christian”? Meaning do you just tick the box or do you action the ideals of your professed faith?

If dealing with a ‘devout’ non-KTP Muslim, Hindu or other – how do you respond, if your relationship requires a decent personal and professional basis? Do you demonstrate the requirements of your Faith, attending Church, doing good deeds, living according to the Book or do you demonstrate hypocrisy?

Not a laughing matter, if you are there to serve the interests of our Nation!

    • Jack The Insider says:

I figure the classy thing to do is not to draw attention to it, PLMO. Have you experienced similar dilemmas in dealings with with orthodox Jews, as an example? As an atheist, I believe organised religion has been a drag on human accomplishment and I can make some compelling arguments to that end. We’d be on hover boards and tear-arsing around in flying cars by now but no, some of you have to believe in a fictional afterlife.

  • Henry Blofeld says:

Forgive my complete ignorance Mr Insider but who the bloody hell wrote this Koran?

    • Jack The Insider says:

That’s a very good question, Henry which requires a very long answer. The short answer is men, men from the 7th and 8th centuries from what we today call the Persian Gulf. It is the world’s fastest growing religion (scientology didn’t make it into the top ten again – awww). Islam is really hot right now. If you’re a bit of hipster, you’d have to think about it. Hey, you’ve already got the beard, knock yourself out. Get stuck in.

      • Not Finished Yet says:

Let’s not mince words on this one. The major reason why it’s the world’s fastest growing religions is because (despite it paradoxically being the most femenist of religions) unlike women in most of the rest of the world these days, women in most Islamic countries still have very limited control over their bodies and their reproductive rights.

      • Dismayed says:

Interest free loans to I believe.

        • JackSprat says:

From what I gather there is no interest but the amount of principal to be re- paid is more than the amount borrowed.
          Could be wrong though.

        • Penny says:

And no such things as joint accounts in the National Bank of Kuwait. You get your very own….

        • John O'Hagan says:

I may be wrong, but my understanding is that Islamic finance forbids interest (“usury”), as Christian culture once did, but allows various forms of profit sharing. Seems sensible as I would have thought it would encourage the lender to ensure the borrower’s use of the loan will produce a profit, and discourage predatory lending and credit bubbles.

        • Mack the Knife says:

There are fees, but it is not called interest.

    • Carl on the Coast says:

I say HB, your ignorance may extend beyond the origins of the Koran, as you appear not to be aware that the first edition of the OED notes the use of “bloody hell” as being constantly in the mouths of the lower classes.

Respectable people considered it a “horrid word”, on par with obscene or profane language. That’s probably why that infamous Aussie tourism promotion a few years ago, enquiring as to where various folk were, was such a failure.

I sometimes wonder what the bloody hell were the script writers thinking.

      • Henry Blofeld says:

I can assure my ignorance extends way beyond the origins of the Koran dear Carl. Just the other day I started a list of every thing I did not know and after point 56 I yelled “bloody hell” and tore it up! Cheers good buddy and keep that Mr Baptiste in check the cheeky but lovable and knowledgeable wretch he is.

      • Jean Baptiste says:

I’m pretty sure the script writers were diabolical atheists trying to discourage religious nuts from visiting us.
        A cunning plan!
